Two weeks passed, and Blaine was busier than ever. He was constantly staying after school to help students with audition pieces and even began giving private voice and piano lessons for free. Kurt, on the other hand, was losing hours at work and unable to even walk into his workroom until he heard back from the producer.
Kurts favorite times of the day were those with Blaine. He barely saw Blaine except for when theyd walk together to and from work, and their occasional lessons, which were constantly being postponed because Blaine had so much work. Even if Blaine was late, Kurt would walk back to the school for him, especially after what happened the few weeks before.
"Do you have an umbrella? It looks like its going to rain," Kurt asked as they walked home on a Monday afternoon. It was one of the warmer days theyd had that November, but sweaters and jackets were still necessary.
"Really? Its always sunny as far as Im concerned."
Kurt smiled and gently bumped shoulders with Blaine. "Youre cute."
"How cute?"
"The cutest." Kurt squeezed Blaines hand, their fingers intertwined and arms swinging like a pendulum between them. "Should I take that as a no?"
"I think I left it in my desk. Do you think well make it back?"
As soon as Blaine finished his question, a raindrop fell onto the tip of Kurts nose. "Not very likely."
They stood motionless as the rain began falling, sprinkling the nearly barren trees and grass around them with sparkling droplets.
"Lets go." Kurt tried pulling Blaine along, but he didnt move. "Are you coming?"
Blaine wore a blank expression, so Kurt rubbed his arm. "Blaine? Is everything okay?"
Blaine nodded, snapping back to focus. "Im sorry...This just reminded me of something."
They walked at a slightly faster pace through the rain, until they realized it was no use; they were going to be drenched no matter what.
"Lets get pizza," Blaine said, completely out of nowhere. "Isnt there that dollar-a-slice pizza place like a block from our building?"
"Now?"
"I feel like I havent actually spent time with you in weeks. I want to forget about all the lessons I have to plan and listen to the rain with my boyfriend."
Like Kurt could say no to that.
Soon they were standing against a brick wall outside a cheap New York pizza shop. There was a small covering overhead, giving them protection from the rain as they each ate a slice of pizza from a paper plate.
"Rachel called this morning and asked if we wanted to have Thanksgiving at her place," Kurt mentioned casually. "I didnt give her an answer because I was waiting to ask you."
"Will it just be the four of us?"
"And Santanas girlfriend. Rachel suggested that you invite Sam...kind of like a mini reunion."
"Plus me."
Kurt smiled. "The best possible addition...But if you dont want to-"
"Kurt, Id love to go. My Thanksgivings usually consist of Cooper and my grandparents, so itll be a fun change."
As they ate, curiosity got the best of Kurt. "What did the rain remind you of, back there, if you dont mind me asking?"
There was a small hesitation, and Kurt wondered if he shouldnt have asked. "My parents," Blaine started, "would take me and my brother to the park when I was really little. One day it started raining, and my mom tried to pull me along but I wouldnt go. We ended up just dancing in the rain...even my dad and Cooper too." Blaine smiled shyly. "My mom was wearing this beautiful red dress with lace and frills that Id pull at...shed get so mad when Id pull one off."
"It sounds wonderful," Kurt replied softly.
"It was. I miss them."
"I know how you feel." Kurt was suddenly overcome by sadness, remembering those sort of experiences with his mother and Finn.
After they were finished eating, Kurt and Blaine made no rush to get home, and neither of them ever complained as cold rain soaked into their jackets.
"I really do like the rain," Blaine said, stopping at the steps in front of their apartment building. "Its one of those things that doesnt need to be seen. You can hear it...and feel it, even smell it." Blaine squeezed Kurts hand. "Listen."
Kurt closed his eyes and listened to the rain as it created a symphony around them; the sounds of the city immersed in a steady pulse. Kurt wondered why hed never stopped to listen before. Before, Kurt guessed, he didnt have Blaine.
Thanksgiving arrived in no time, and Kurt couldnt help but worry about Blaine. Blaine urged hed be fine, especially since it was a small dinner and nothing like the Halloween party, but Kurt didnt want Blaine to be miserable the entire night.
When Kurt and Blaine arrived at Rachel and Santanas apartment, Sam and Brittany-who had recently gotten back with Santana-were already there. Blaine seemed to have a knack for making them late, but Kurt found it endearing.
There were hugs all around, and Blaine seemed much calmer than he had at the party. Brittany asked why Blaine was wearing sunglasses indoors, which part of Kurt was expecting. He politely explained why, to which Brittany replied with a story about how Lord Tubbingtons mom was blind.
"Imagine if you guys had met in high school," Sam said shorty after dinner started. He was sitting next to Blaine and passing around a bowl of mashed potatoes. "We competed against Dalton a few times so it couldve happened."
"I actually did go to the show choir competitions," Blaine replied, shrugging as he slowly poured himself a glass of wine. Rachel had pulled out bottles of expensive wine shed been saving for a special occasion. "I wouldve tried out for the Warblers, but dancing wasnt really my thing." Maybe Blaine had actually heard him sing. What if they had met before and didnt even know it?
Santana chuckled. "Yeah, I remember those intense sidesteps." She took a sip of wine before continuing, "If they met during high school theyd probably be married now and have like three adopted orphans from Africa."
"No, Kurt has always said hed get a surrogate," Rachel chimed in, smiling brightly at him; obviously theyd had that discussion a few too many times.
Kurt tried to laugh off the conversation, noticing Blaine attempting to force an entire glass of wine down his throat. "Guys, weve only been dating for a couple months, calm down."
"Dont you live together?" Brittany asked.
"No, Brittany, we dont."
"Oh, but Santana said-"
"What Brit is trying to say," Santana interjected, "is that it feels like forever."
"When did you move in again, Blaine?" Rachel asked.
"A little over three months ago. I almost picked a different apartment building entirely, but for some reason I decided against it last minute." Blaine smiled to himself. "Its a good thing our bags are soulmates."
Kurt smiled and took Blaines hand under the table, remembering one of their first conversations.
"Hey, Rachel," Kurt said as he cut a slice of turkey, "Have you heard anything from the producer? He hasnt called."
"Dont worry, Kurt, thats just how theatre works," she assured him. Rachel was much more confident about the situation than Kurt.
"Speaking of amazing opportunities," Blaine started, "I got a call asking if I wanted to compose a piece for an actual movie."
The table erupted with praise. "Blaine, thats amazing," Kurt said, squeezing his hand. "Why didnt you tell me?"
"I didnt want to say anything without knowing all the details. I still dont really know everything, but I know I wouldnt have to move to LA or anything." Kurt didnt even think about that, but he was immediately relieved.
"Everyones dreams are coming true," Rachel declared.
After dinner, they all sat in the living room with glasses of wine, and Rachel was obviously tipsy. Her hands were all over Sam, and Kurt felt unbelievably uncomfortable. Kurt only had one glass, since he had to find him and Blaine a taxi back to their apartments, and they definitely werent staying over at Rachel and Santanas.
"Lets play spin the bottle!" Rachel yelled, holding up the bottle of wine Blaine had just tapped off.
"We arent in high school anymore, Berry," Santana snorted. "Besides, I wouldnt want to risk the one in five chance that Id have to watch you make out with Hummel."
Kurt thought about having to watch Blaine kiss Rachel and shuddered. "Im with Santana."
Blaine didnt talk much, but kept his hand glued to Kurts thigh. After a few minutes of listening to music and catching up, something about Blaine seemed off.
"Kurt…" Blaine uttered softly. "Can you help me to the bathroom? I cant really remember where it is."
"Of course." Once they stood up, Kurt took Blaines arm at first, until it became obvious that Blaine could barely walk on his own. Kurt slid his arm around Blaines waist until most of his weight was resting on Kurts side. They stumbled their way to the bathroom, Blaine almost tripping and falling on more than one occasion.
"How much did you drink?" Kurt asked when they made it to the bathroom door.
"I only had one glass of wine." Blaine grinned and leaned back against the door. "Multiple times."
Blaine seemed in a daze, unmoving. "Are you going to go in or do you need help with that too?"
"Oh." Blaine was forced back into attention and then fumbled with the doorknob until it opened.
Within seconds, Blaine had grabbed Kurts arm. At first he thought Blaine tripped, but without warning Blaine had pulled Kurt into the bathroom and closed the door.
"Blaine, what are you-"
"Shh." Blaine pressed a finger to Kurts lips. "No one will notice were gone." Kurt was confused at first, until Blaine pushed him back up against the bathroom door, catching him off-guard.
Blaine kissed him, sloppily and off-center. He tasted of wine and Kurt knew this wasnt like Blaine. "Youre drunk," Kurt said as Blaines lips began to explore his neck.
Blaine ignored him, his hands roaming everywhere, ranging from Kurts hair to his ass. Blaine returned his lips to Kurts, using much more tongue than usual. "Lets just do it," Blaine said urgently, sliding his thigh between Kurts legs. "I want you. I want you so bad."
"Here?" Kurt mumbled, and for a few moments actually evaluated the size of the room. Kurt couldnt help but be turned on by Blaines eagerness, but this wasnt Blaine, it wasnt right. "We cant…"
"Why not?"
"For starters, youre barely standing." Kurt sighed. "This isnt what you want."
"I want you," Blaine insisted, his voice and body becoming much more frantic.
"I want you too, but not like this. Ill still be here, and still want you, when youre sober. I know you want your first time to special...not in Rachel Berrys bathroom."
"I lied. It doesnt have to be special." Blaine tripped over his words. "I was just afraid then, but Im not afraid now. I feel good now."
"What are you talking about?"
"Fine...Ill just…" Blaine dropped to his knees and held tightly to Kurts hips. "This shouldnt be that hard, right?"
"Oh my god." Kurt had to look away and bite his tongue. "Blaine, stand up, please."
"Okay." Blaine nodded and stood up with a jolt, immediately holding his hand over his forehead and swaying from side-to-side. "Whoa, now I feel like Im gonna be sick."
Kurt was thankful they were in a bathroom.
They left shortly after; Kurt using the excuse that Blaine was sick. Although it was true, Kurt was more worried about what Blaine, and others whod been drinking, were going to say as the night dragged on.
Blaine got sick again when they reached his apartment, and Kurt was glad hed taken the time to learn how Blaine sorted his clothes, so he was able to help him change into pajamas.
Kurt fell back onto Blaines bed, tired from the entire evening, and Blaine followed suit. There was an immediate thud and the mattress fell a few inches, startling them both.
"What the…"
Blaine erupted with laughter, his eyes crinkling and his entire body convulsing. "We broke the bed!" Blaine laughed so hard that tears started falling from the corners of his eyes.
Soon Kurt was laughing too, because there they were, two grown men dying of laughter on a bed they just busted, without even doing anything sexual.
They laughed for what seemed like an eternity, until their stomachs hurt too much to continue. Kurt stared at the ceiling as he caught his breath, trying to remember a time where hed laughed so hard. "Wait, didnt you break your bed before?" Kurt asked, remembering one of the first times he visited Blaines apartment.
"Oh yeah. That time was because I was so happy that you came over that I started jumping on my bed. I had a huge crush on you." Blaine giggled. "I think I did it so many times that my bed gave out." Drunk Blaine was both horny and incredibly adorable.
"Do you still have a crush on me?" Kurt said smugly.
"No...Im in love with you."
Kurt turned his head slowly to look at Blaine, who had turned onto his side to face him. Blaines words filled the air and lingered there as he smiled a goofy, drunk smile. The only thing Kurt could hear was the subtle hum of the AC, until his heart began beating in his ears.
Kurt opened his mouth to reply, but he couldnt form the words. Saying it would change everything. This would mean Kurt was in love again.
He wanted to write it off as a drunken confession, hoping that Blaine wouldnt remember in the morning. Other men had told Kurt they loved him before, and, like Blaine, most of them were drunk. Even though Blaine was crashing from having drank nearly an entire bottle of wine, there was an inkling in that back of Kurts mind that knew it was real.
It was too real.
"You should get some sleep," Kurt whispered as he moved in to kiss Blaine on the cheek, but Blaine stopped him before he could.
"Stay." Blaine placed his hand on Kurts cheek and held him there. "Please."
"I have a really early shift at work tomorrow. I wouldnt want to wake you." It was true; he had to go in the coffee shop at 4am since they were opening early for the Black Friday shoppers.
"Okay…" Blaine sighed, sitting up.
"You actually scared me tonight. Im pretty sure you were one drink away from alcohol poisoning."
"Im sorry." Blaine crossed an X over his heart with a grin. "No more drinking ever again."
Kurt kissed him on the cheek without saying a word. He usually mentioned seeing Blaine the next day, but there was no need to pick him up in the morning since school was on Thanksgiving break, and Kurt wasnt sure if theyd get a chance to get together in the following days.
"Hey," Blaine giggled as Kurt walked out his bedroom. "Im thankful for you!"
"Im thankful for you too," Kurt answered without looking back.
