He leaned his head back and stare out the cab window, passing the heat consumed streets of New York and its inhabitants. Shifting in the sticky leather seats he tried to locate the small diner in which Rachel was meeting him. Once the hospital offered him time to do a fellowship in any place of his choosing, he knew he had to visit his sister.
The taxi driver shouted something out of the window that surprised him, making him sift through his bag to locate his phone and earphones. Opening his Spotify he put one of his favorite playlist on shuffle, humming the soft R&B tune under his breath. His music tasted had matured since high school, college even. Less top 40 more underground music despite the protests of his sister who found value in what was currently popular.
The driver stopped in front of the diner and he handed him the required amount before slinging his satchel over his shoulder and grabbing the houndstooth suitcase from where it rest in the cabs trunk. Entering the small diner he saw Rachel standing next to a stunning man, arguing about something that he couldnt quite decipher.
"I wont have time Rae. Ive got a story I have to finish before deadline. I even made time to say hi,but hes late." The man said adjusting the strap of his black leather bag. He stood tall with enigmatic blue eyes, dressed in designers that he only recognized from the magazines.
"Im sorry. I hope you werent waiting for me, but traffic was heavy." He said approaching them. His sister wrapped her arms around him and pulled him into a hug, with a high pitch squeal that set the man off rolling his eyes.
"Blaine, this is my bestest friend Kurt Hummel." Rachel said brightly, moving out of the way, giving the two men the slightest push towards each other.
Kurt shook his hand and gave him a small smile."Its nice to meet you Blaine, but Ive got to run.The life of a journalist never stops."
"Its the same if youre a doctor." He replied. Kurt gave Rachel a slight squeeze before bounding out of the diner and into the sweltering heat. Rachel apologized for his quick exit before asking him about the life he left behind in Maine. "Its not New York." was all he could say before she launched into a dissertation about her half a year in New York, like she was reciting from a textbook.
"And so he told me that I belong on a stage so Im doing Spring Awakening!" Rachel beamed he congratulated her on her success as she led him down the street into the apartment where Kurt was hunched over his laptop typing furiously.
He loved the way his hair fell into his face and the unconscious biting his lip, which turned him on as he observed the younger man in his zone. "He gets like that sometimes when he gets a story." She explained leading him toward the guest room. "Just try not to bother him. I tried to get him to eat once and he almost bit off my finger." She continued flexing her fingers for emphasis.
"Ive got a late practice, so if I were you Id get some sleep if you have to be at the hospital early." Rachel warned before running off.He removed his boat shoes and laid down on the bed thankful for the cool sheets. He fell asleep there and awoke in the early hours of the morning.
Just shy of 2 a.m. he removed his clothes and put on a pair of sweatpants. Leaving his chest bare he wandered into the kitchen where Kurt was still tapping away at his laptop. Ignoring Rachels warning he grabbed the bottle of water from the fridge and placed it next to Kurts laptop, before grabbing one of his own. He saw Kurt look up at him over his screen and let his eyes roam over his body.He resolved to walk around shirtless more often before receding into it the confines of his room.
When his phone alarm blared the opening notes to a Jamie Woon song he sat up and wiped his eyes letting the sleep in the corner of his eyes fall off onto his pointer fingers. He quickly showered and threw on his clothing for the day trying for a good first impression for his first day at work. He walked out of his room in search of Rachel but ended up bumping into a unhazed Kurt who was smiling with his hair and outfit primed to perfection.
"Hey Kurt, is this a good first day of work outfit? I was going to ask Rachel but I bumped into you first." Kurt laughed and grab his hand leading him into his room.
"Its good you did. she has zero fashion sense whatsoever and besides, she stayed over Jesses last night." Kurt replied, grabbing a bowtie off of the golden rack he had sitting on his dresser.
Removing the plain blue tie from his neck, he clasped the detailed grey one round his collar. He could feel Kurts breath, his heat against him. "Perfect." Came Kurts whisper, stepping back and handing him the tie.
He thanked him profusely and checked the time before rushing out of the apartment. His mind clouded with thoughts of the beautiful journalist who had a given him the beautiful gray bow tie.
