”So… I was wondering, Mr. Kurt Hummel, will you go on a date with me, Blaine Anderson,” Blaine tried to reach for Kurt’s hand over the small table where they sat but Kurt kept his hand limp in his lap, before looking around to see if anyone noticed.
“I thought that was what coffee was for?” Kurt asked into the table. “This isn’t a date?”
Kurt knew what he was saying, and he knew this wasn’t the kind of date that Blaine was referring to, but for his own sake he pretended to be his clueless self.
“Come, on, Kurt,” Blaine said, giving up his hand and returning it to his coffee cup. “I’m your boyfriend, I want to take you out to dinner-“
“We went to Breadstix last Friday,” Kurt pointed out, taking a sip of coffee.
“I want to hold your hand without you feeling like people are starring or worrying about what people are going to say to us.” Blaine had caught him and Kurt sighed.
“I know, but we both know that it’s not going to happen so we might as well be happy with our coffee and unlimited amount of breadsticks.” Kurt only looked up from his coffee when Blaine didn’t say anything in return. So Kurt kept going, feeling the need to make Blaine understand, “Blaine, you know how much you mean to me, but we live in Ohio. And we’re gay. You know how much I would absolutely adore the idea of being taken out to dinner, and having someone pull out my chair for me and hold my hand, maybe steal a few kisses between courses, but we both know that if we’re going to think we can do those things, in the end it’s just worse for us because we’ll only be disappointed in the end.”
Blaine sighed because Kurt was right, as he usually was. Kurt felt Blaine’s mood decrease slightly, “and besides, unlimited breadsticks? How can anyone compete with that?”
Blaine smiled slightly at Kurt’s light humor and they were both back to talking about anything else but their relationship. For Blaine though, this conversation wasn’t over and he’d figure out a way to get Kurt to agree to have a real date with him, even if Blaine had to drive them Rachel Berry’s house in the middle of the night while the Berry family was in New York enjoying all of the Broadway shows New York had to offer. Blaine would find a way to have a nice evening alone with Kurt even if he had to bribe certain people with Broadway tickets.
It was a Friday and Blaine was kind of bummed out, the Warblers had excused Kurt and a few other members from practice so they could go home and start on their weekend. But it wasn’t just the lack of Kurt that was making Blaine’s mood sour, even if it’s been days he was still thinking about what Kurt said about the whole date thing.
The Warblers took note on Blaine’s mood and tried to uplift his spirits with song, but Blaine denied them and passed the solos on to someone else that he thought should have a turn. With ten minuets left Wes finally brought his gavel down, literally. Everyone jumped at the unexpected noise and looked to Wes, who sighed and stood.
“Blaine, what’s going on with you?” No one looked surprised at the question, instead they all looked expectantly at Blaine for some sort of explanation.
Blaine sighed and slumped into the couch, “if you all must know, and it’s not a big deal or anything it’s just… Kurt won’t go on a date with me.”
Everyone looked confused for a minuet, as David spoke, “He didn’t umm”
Blaine shook his head, “he didn’t break up with me or anything, he just refuses to go on an actual date with me.” Some of the Warblers laughed while some looked at him sympathetically.
Nick and Jeff looked at each other suspiciously with a sudden fascination with Kurt and Blaine’s relationship. Even though Blaine hadn’t said anything yet, they knew exactly what was going on, having been there themselves, although no one knew.
“No matter how much we wish it to be true, everyone here knows that Ohio isn’t as accepting of our relationship as you guys.” That’s the sentence that gave Jeff and Nick the idea, it was that moment where they became 100% involved in Blaine and Kurt’s love life, but for now they didn’t say anything, they just let Blaine go on. “Kurt is a hopeless romantic, most of us can vouch for that, but he’s afraid to go on a date with me because he doesn’t want anyone to be starring at us or whispering about us. I honestly don’t blame him, I just wish there was somewhere we could go, somewhere we wouldn’t have to pretend we’re two friends meeting for dinner.
“He’s the kind of guy that would prefer to hold hands over dinner than some crazy make out in the back of a car, I just wish there was a way I could give him that without other people making a big deal out of it.”
Wes smiled at his friend, backing him up without another second of thought “mission accepted.”
Blaine furrowed his eyebrows, unsure if he hear right. “Excuse me?”
Wes was back sitting down as David started scribbling notes “Anyone have ideas?”
Hands were raised eagerly, smaller discussions were formed and Blaine still looked around confused at what was happening.
Wes pounded his gavel for silence as the group got out of control, and looked towards the lost man in the room, “Blaine, just relax, call Kurt and ask him on a date, we’ve all got you’re back and we’ll find a way to make this work.”
Blaine didn’t know what to say, he trusted Wes and most of the Warblers with his life so he had no reason to doubt them. If they wanted something to happen, it usually does so he just said a small, “Thank you.” And got up to hug Wes tightly.
“We’ll scour all of Ohio if we need to in order to find you somewhere you and Kurt can have dinner together without anyone mentioning your relationship.” Blaine let Wes go with a teary smile, so thankful to have the friends he has. “Now go call your man and convince him to let you take him out, I’ll talk with everyone and see if we can figure this out.”
Blaine didn’t need telling a third time, he didn’t even wait until he reached his room to pull out his phone and call Kurt.
Once Blaine was out of the room and the door was closed, Wes turned to the remaining group of people, “any suggestions?”
Jeff and Nick silently decided this was their time to shine and they came out of the back of the group to present their idea to Wes.
And of course Wes fully supported their idea. Blaine and Kurt will have a night to remember.
“Hello?” Kurts cheery voice answered, “Warbler practice over already?”
”Umm, sort of, yeah.” Blaine answered nervously. “I need to talk to you about something.”
”Oh…”
“It’s nothing bad!” Blaine reassured him, “there’s just a certain discussion I’d like to finish talking to you about, if that’s okay.”
Kurt took a breath and asked Blaine to hold as he abandoned the couch and walked to his room, “alright.”
“So I know how you feel about dates,” Blaine started, but Kurt had a feeling he knew where this was going.
“Blaine-“ Kurt said with another sigh.
“Kurt, baby,” Blaine reasoned, “just hear me out?”
“Fine, only because I can’t resist you,” Kurt smiled into the phone. “Go on…”
Blaine smiled too, but continued his speech, “Kurt, I am absolutely crazy about you, and I know how you feel, so don’t think I didn’t take your feelings into consideration, because I did. And well, Kurt, will you please just go on one date with me? I still have yet to figure out the fine details but I promise you that if something goes wrong we can leave, and I’ll make sure it’s no where that people are going to stare or say mean things or possibly even kick us out.” Blaine started to trail off a little but then cleared his throat. “I just care about you so much Kurt and I want to be your everything. I want to be the one who gets to take you out on dates because we both deserve this.”
There was a pause in the phone as they both processed their thoughts. However, Kurt was the first to speak.
“You know Blaine,” Kurt said softly into the phone. He had something he felt he needed to tell Blaine, maybe make him understand better. “The day we met, as soon as you held my hand I couldn’t believe it. Someone was holding my hand, someone I barley even knew, someone who was so beautiful it nearly hurt to look at because I would never think I’d be lucky enough to have him. And that was huge for me, Blaine.” Kurt took a moment, trying to choose his words carefully. “No one has ever held my hand like that. Of course, with a girl linking hands and such is a must and I’ve skipped down the hall… but with guys I’ve never…. done anything, even something as little as holding hands, not before you. I know they’re cool with my sexuality most of the time, but even the guys from New Directions don’t keep eye contact with me. When Sam transferred to McKinley I was going to do a duet with him, but in order to make him stay in Glee certain people and reasons made me back out. I just came to the conclusion that life will never be normal, that I will always be forced to hold my own hand, even if I found someone who would hold mine. Blaine, I am madly crazy about you, too. And if this is what you want then lets do it.”
Blaine listened patiently to see if that was all Kurt had to say “…really?”
“Honestly Blaine, you could probably convince me to jump off a 5 story building with only an umbrella,” Kurt told him.
Blaine scoffed “I would never-“
Kurt interjected, though, “But it’s only because I trust you, I know you wouldn’t do anything to intentionally hurt me, or us. So if this is something you want, then I’ll do it.”
Blaine didn’t know if Kurt fully understood why he wanted to do this for him, “Kurt, I want you to have fun with this, though. I want you to want to dress up and have a night out with me because it’s something that you’d enjoy and would be excited about. You can’t even doubt the fact that you’re a hopeless romantic, I want to be the one to help fill your romantic needs, in a sense.”
Kurt smiled at how loving his boyfriend truly is.
“Blaine, now you need to stop worrying, I promise I will be plenty excited before date night, just give me some time to wrap my head around the idea. I’ve never really allowed myself to even think about it,” Kurt confessed. “Because I know if I thought about, the more I wished it would be true, and I just sort of believed, for people like us, we wouldn’t be able to have that fairy tale.”
Blaine was nervous, yet relieved that Kurt trusted him so much. He was happy about the outcome though, because even if he hadn’t said it yet, Blaine was deeply in love with Kurt, and he would do anything for him, and he felt like this was something that Kurt needed, something they both needed.
