As Kurt sat on Blaine’s couch talking to his dad, he couldn’t help being frustrated that this is what had to happed to get his own father to pay attention to him. But in the mean time, there was a part of him that was thankful for it. When Burt asked him if he was ok, he nodded.

He looked his son over, taking note of every cut, bruise, and blood spot, a mix of a scowl and worry on his face. Kurt’s face had puffed out by now, but he had an ice pack on it. Both of his eyes were black and there were several bruises on his face, his nose still bleeding slightly.

“Listen, dad, be a little nicer to Blaine, ok? He was the one who saved me.” Burt leaned in to hear his son’s whisper, and nodded when he had finished. He whispered back.

“I guess your right. Dammit, Kurt, I was just so worried.” Kurt smiled slightly. His father spoke again, back to normal volume this time. “That Karofsky kid is lucky that the police got to him before I did. And let me tell you, Finn is not taking this lightly either. Any of his friends go after you at school, and Finn will hand them their asses.” Kurt smiled and glanced at Blaine before answering.

“I’m not sure that’ll be necessary. Blaine did perfectly fine by himself. He boxes, apparently.” Burt, not knowing that Blaine was in the room, looked over at him and motioned for him to sit down. Blaine did what he was told, noting mentally that it was his house to begin with.

“Blaine. I’m sorry for how I acted on the phone, I was just-” Blaine interrupted.

“I know, Mr. Hummel. It’s fine.”

“Call me Burt. But, still. I’m very grateful that you were there. If you weren’t…” Burt couldn’t finish. He just couldn’t. He couldn’t bear to speak of what would’ve happened if Blaine hadn’t gotten to his house right at that time. Karofsky could’ve killed his son. He probably would’ve too. But putting that kind of fear into Kurt, who was already shaken, was unnecessary.

Blaine scooted himself closer to Kurt and took his hand in his own. He looked at Kurt, smiling at him, then looked at his father. “Mr. Humme-…I mean, Burt, nothing will happen to your son with me around. I guarantee it.” Burt looked at the two boys. He started to understand. But there was still something that didn’t make sense.

“Kurt…why did you break up with David in the first place?” Kurt looked at Blaine, lost for words. Blaine looked down. He knew it wasn’t his place to tell Burt why. He knew Kurt had to. Kurt looked down too.

“He…” Kurt started, but couldn’t bring himself to say the words.

“He what, Kurt? What did he do?”

“…he hit me…”

“What?” It wasn’t as much of a question as a demand for more information. Kurt knew that tone. “Like, a one time thing, or what?” Kurt started to tear up. Just thinking about this made his body hurt all over again.

“No, dad. He…he abused me.”

“And you stayed with him?!” Blaine’s mother walked in from the kitchen, bringing along four cups of coffee.

“Mr. Hummel-”

“Burt.”

“Ok. Burt, I don’t really think that this is the time to blame your son, do you?” Burt sighed.

“No.” He looked over at Kurt. “Why didn’t you tell anybody?” Drita spoke up again.

“If I may, Burt, I, uh…I went through the same thing. My ex-husband, Blaine’s father, hit me. Both of us, really. It’s just not exactly something you feel comfortable telling someone. Anyone. Not even people your close to. My best friend never knew. Actually, she still doesn’t. Blaine was just able to figure out the signs on Kurt because he saw them in me.” Kurt and Burt both looked at them, shocked. Kurt was the first to speak.

“Blaine, you didn’t tell me your dad hit you too.” Blaine just looked down.

“Like she said, its not exactly something you talk about.” He looked up at Kurt, his eyes focused solely on him. “I still have scars from what he did to me. So does my mom. I didn’t…no, I wouldn’t let that happen to you.” Kurt, still holding Blaine’s hand, squeezed it slightly, reassuring him. Burt looked at them.

“Umm…so are you two kinda…y’know…’together’ now?” Kurt smiles, looking at Blaine, who smiled right back.

“I think so,” Kurt said softly, still staring into Blaine’s beautiful eyes. Drita smiled, and Kurt was pleasantly surprised to see Burt smiling at them as well. Maybe…maybe he’s finally accepting it…Kurt thought to himself, smiling at the idea.

“Just…be careful.” Blaine watched as Kurt turned bright red, staring at his dad.

“Kurt, would you still like to spend the night here?” Drita looked at him, concerned.

“Would you mind, dad?” Burt stood as he spoke, stretching himself out.

“Fine with me. I just wanted to make sure you were ok. And Drita, I really appreciate you helping him out. It means a lot to me.” She smiled.

“Hey, Blaine did most, well, all of the work.”

“Fair point.” He held his hand out to Blaine, and Blaine took him into a firm handshake. “Thank you, son.” Blaine nodded. “Ok. I guess I’ll be going. I’ll tell Finn and Carole that your ok. Like I said, Finn was pissed and Carole was hysterical when I left, so they’ll want me home.” Kurt stood and hugged him.

“Bye, dad.”

“Call us tomorrow, ok? They’ll wanna talk to you.”

“Ok.”

“Alright. See you tomorrow.” As Drita showed him out, Kurt looked over at Blaine.

“…you really still have scars?”
