Kurt did very well in college. He got all A's in his classes, joined a theater club where he was their assistant costume designer, and began teaching reading to formerly homeless kids in the city as a volunteer.
He would often use books by his favorite young adult author, since they appealed to the kids he was teaching. He would always begin with the story of how he had met the author. The kids either found this hilarious or were impressed. Both reactions worked as a good icebreaker.
He also continued to post on the YouTube channel with Brittany, but their schedules only aligned intermittently. In their last year of college, they had only done two shows. They were prepping for a third one, but this time it would be live, by overwhelming fan request.
After hugging and squealing and setting up their camera in Brittany's dorm kitchen which they had secured for the evening, they began the show.
"I'm Brittany S. Pierce and this is my gay bar superstar, Kurt Hummel. That's right, Kurt is now 21 and able to legally get smashed with the rest of the hot guys who don't find me sexually attractive. Welcome to Meals and Feels!"
"Thanks for that charming introduction, Brit. Despite the late hour, today we are making sourdough flax banana french toast. Breakfast foods tend to adhere to the societal limitations of the hours before twelve noon, but I can assure you that consuming them in a less traditional time frame can be highly rewarding."
"Oh, and me and Kurt will be checking the comments as we go, since today we are LIVE for the first time. Unedited, uncensored, anything could happen."
"Brit, can you grind up some flax seeds in the coffee grinder while I beat the eggs for the french toast batter?"
Brittany directed a meaningful, knowing look at the camera. "Sure I will, Kurt, and while I do that lets talk about the movie we saw last night, the adaptation of B.D. Anderson's latest book, "Picture Perfect Girl" which was a chilling story about the murders of all the popular pretty girls in the high schools throughout Ohio."
"I agree, Bit," Kurt said as he beat the eggs, vanilla, cinammon, and milk in large, shallow, glass bowl. "The portrayal of the killer as a scorned ex-boyfriend who was kicked off the football team after impregnating his prom queen girlfriend was truly impeccable and believable. The descent into the mind of a sociopath was illustrated very well indeed."
Brittany nodded her head at Kurt. "I see in the comments that there are a lot of questions about how we think the movie handled some of the more gruesome scenes from the book. Why don't we ask those questions to our special super surprise guest?"
"Brit, what are you talking about?" Kurt was confused. Brittany took out her phone and sent a quick text.
"I would like to welcome Blaine to our show! Also known as B.D. Anderson, author and hottie." Brittany now had a huge grin on her face.
Kurt, just slightly horrified, stared at the door of the kitchen, which indeed did open to reveal a beaming Blaine, looking exactly as young and beautiful as he had the last time they had met in person, soulful hazel eyes and all. But Kurt wasn't a teenager anymore. He took a breath and walked over to Blaine, holding out his hand to shake.
"So nice to see you again, Blaine! Brit definitely surprised me with this one, folks. But the show must go on. Blaine, why don't you tell your adoring public what you thought about the way the movie handled the Sadie Hawkins massacre while you slice these bananas?" Kurt smirked and handed Blaine a cutting board, knife and bananas, directing him to seat at the table within direct view of the camera.
Blaine smirked right back. "I would be happy to."
"Oh my god Kurt we already have 10 million hits on this video with Blaine, this was the best idea ever!"
Kurt, Blaine, and Brittany sat eating the delicious french toast with pure maple syrup, after the camera had been shut off and the live chat had ended. There was no question, it had been an amazing success. Blaine and Brittany shared a look across the table, and Brittany nodded.
"Kurt why don't you and Blaine go out for a drink, I don't mind cleaning up." Brittany suggested. Kurt was done being surprised by anything that happened tonight. He was just going to let the improbable waves of fate float him along in whatever direction they chose. Especially when the waves looked so dapper and handsome.
Their night could be segmented into three conversations, Kurt decided. The first was on the way to a bar that was purposely a half hour walk away.
"You and Brit really really REALLY surprised me, Blaine. Seriously, if I wasn't so ecstatic to meet you I would probably be legitimately annoyed with her. What made you decide to grace our humble cooking show with your iconic charm?"
Blaine threw his head back and laughed. It wasn't deep or throaty like the laugh Kurt had heard on television interviews. It was a little too high for a man, almost resembling a drunk woman's giggles. Kurt immediately loved it.
"Iconic? Seriously? You are too much! God you are so adorable. I love your show, you know? It sounds totally narcissistic, right? But man I look forward to your reviews of my books more than the New York Times. You really tell it like it is, you know?"
Blaine touched his arm and left his hand there as they walked slowly down the sidewalk.
Blaine Anderson is touching my arm, Kurt thought, red alert, this is NOT a drill. "Yes, well, our viewers seem to appreciate it."
"And you know I have made everything you ever cooked on your show. I always feel so healthy afterwards."
"Let me make sure I am understanding your meaning clearly. Blaine, are you...are you a FAN of my show?"
Blaine giggled again. "I suppose I am. Your recipes are really good for my lifestyle, you know? They don't take long, and you and Brittany always make me laugh. Literally, every single time I watch one of your shows I can't keep a straight face."
Kurt and Blaine grinned at each other for an indeterminate amount of time, then awkwardly realized they had stopped walking when a homeless man approached them for money. They quickly resumed their walk.
"Blaine I have to tell you that it is indescribably thrilling to hear that YOU are a fan of ME. I have been such a huge fan of your work for literally years. You have been a positive influence on my formative years and beyond, with your success as an out gay man in the media and your unparallelled talent for prose. Then your contribution to promoting my show over the years, I am uncertain how to even begin to express my sincerest gratitude and admiration."
"Ugh don't talk to me about formative years, I feel like such a perv!" Blaine gave Kurt a pained look, which again turned into a laugh. Blaine could not seem to stop smiling and laughing. "When I saw you in the Barnes and Noble, I thought you were gorgeous. Then you tell me that you're 16 and I felt like such a total creeper. To be fair, though, it's hard to tell how old someone is when they're wearing a costume sometimes, right? Brittany said you designed costumes now?"
"Yes, I work with the theater department sometimes, though my major is technically English."
"Do you also like to write?"
"Back up a second, Blaine. You thought I was gorgeous?" Kurt was blushing at this point, but needed these things to be said.
"I didn't know how you would look now, but yes. If I had known you would grow up to be such a gorgeous man, I would have had to tone down my complimentary thoughts when you were younger."
"Blaine that is ridiculously corny." Kurt was thinking that Blaine's malady of smiling and laughing might be contagious.
"Do you think I'm gorgeous too, Kurt?"
Kurt's body couldn't make up its mind whether to gaze into Blaine's eyes or look down at his shoes with embarrassment. He couldn't possibly have been any more obvious about his opinion on Blaine's appearance. He opted for the eye gazing. "You know I do. Along with millions of devoted fangirls across the globe."
Blaine's voice was giddy and purposefully childlike. He repeated in a singsong voice, "Kurt thinks I'm gorgeous..."
They then somehow made an unspoken decision to hold hands for the rest of the walk. Their hands both reached out at the same time, equally curious and eager. There was no electrical spark when they touched, but there was warmth, like the sun on a flower bud right before it blooms. There were possibilities.
Once they got into the bar, Blaine's demeanor changed drastically. The sweet candy smiles gave way to unashamedly lustful stares. Blaine had brought Kurt here for a reason. As they looked around at the clientele, there were several demonstrative gay couples scattered around. Some were grinding on the dance floor, others were necking up against the walls, and Kurt chose not to think about what the ones in the bathroom were doing.
"So what would you like?" Blaine asked, as he walked toward the bar.
"I want you," Kurt replied, filled with confidence born from adrenaline. He was about to kiss somebody famous.
He grabbed Blaine's hand and lead him over to an as yet unoccupied section of wall, enjoying the aesthetic of blacklight against Blaine's thin shirt.Blaine did not argue, he just smiled some more and followed Kurt's lead.
They made out against the wall like they had done it a hundred times before. They took turns leading the kiss, and it felt like dancing but better. Then they were dancing, also, for one song, before focusing again on kissing. Blaine's kisses moved to the pulse points on Kurt's neck, and Kurt was sure the loud music must be drowning out an indecent groaning sound from his throat.
Kurt considered this the second part of the conversation. They spoke with their bodies, perhaps communicating better than they could with words. Their bodies didn't make any promises, but they explored possibilities and reassured each other that the interest was entirely, deliciously mutual.
On the walk back to the subway, where they parted, they were both silent, perhaps taking in the enormity of this night. They both saw a blossoming future laid out ahead of them if they could manage to do and say the right things. But no, tonight it didn't matter. Kurt would allow tonight to exist outside of reality and in the realm of magic things.
The third part of the conversation took place at the end of the night, lasted exactly two sentences, and turned Kurt into a pile of horny, dreamy, gelatinous goo. It consisted of Kurt asking Blaine if he could cook dinner for him sometime, and Blaine kissing him softly on the lips and saying, "How about tomorrow night?"
