The family were sitting at the airport’s waiting lounge for their last minute flight to board. The phone call was from Carole and she had terrible news.
Burt had died.
She told Blaine on the phone that it was another heart attack, but this one was worst then the one he had when Kurt was in high school. Burt had been at home when it happened and when Carole called the ambulance, and they arrived they had already told her to prepare for the worst. He then died only a few minutes after arriving at the hospital.
Blaine had to get Ella, Tyler and Logan up and packed their bags. No way was he gonna let Kurt do it, he was already shaking and in tears.
“Your” Blaine swallowed to try not let him voice shake too much “Your granddad’s in hospital and gone to sleep, and he‘ll be asleep for a long time” he said quietly to the six year old.
“Is he gonna wake up?” Ella asked. Blaine didn’t answer, he couldn’t. Instead he reached over to Kurt, who was sitting next to him on the other chair, and held his hand and squeezed it tightly.
Ella had Tyler sitting on her knee, trying to get him back to sleep, since it was around midnight, but instead he was smiling away. Not knowing this wasn’t a time to smile.
“Flight 0157 to Lima, Ohio is now boarding” The announcer said over the speakers. Kurt picked up Logan, who he had on his lap, Blaine took Tyler, while Ella was putting on her bright pink backpack she was using as her carry on.
The plane wasn’t full, in fact they would have guessed only around forty people were on the plane. It was late at night and they were going to Lima, that pretty much said it all.
Because of the amount of room on the plane, Ella sat in the sets in front of Kurt and Blaine with Tyler and Logan, who were in seats that were like their car seats they had brought from the airline. Blaine thought that would be best, since Kurt hadn’t even spoken since they got the phone call.
The only time Blaine let go of Kurt’s hand was when he went to sit in Ella’s seat, with her on his lap, during take off since it was the boys first time flying and Ella never liked it.
When they were aloud t move around the cabin, Blaine let the three to play with whatever Ella had in her bag, and went back to his seat.
Kurt was sitting by the window, with his head in his hand, staring out the window. When Kurt did turn his head away from the window to see Blaine, Blaine just opened his arms out and said “come here”.
Kurt nearly collapsed in his arms, Blaine held him tightly. He heard Kurt sob into his shoulder. Blaine look to the seats in front to see Ella with her headphones in watching the movie playing on the screen and the boys wouldn’t even care if they heard them cry.
Blaine rested his head on top of Kurt’s and whispered in his ear “It’s ok baby, it’s gonna be ok” on the last word Blaine voice really did shake and felt tears roll down his cheeks.
“No its not” Kurt said turning his head so he could look up at Blaine “How is it gonna be ok? I’ve lost him, I’ve lost my dad. My only parent, gone.” Kurt cried even more after saying that.
“You’ve got me baby, and Finn and Carole. Your not alone, you’ve got a family” Blaine said.
“Carole and Finn aren’t my blood family, only by married” Kurt swallowed “Now their technically not even that anymore”
Blaine held Kurt tighter, letting him rest on the crook of his neck. Holding him as close as he could.
He hated seeing Kurt so upset, it broke his heart. Kurt was right though, Burt had been Kurt’s only parent for a really long time, and was the most important person in his life. Yes he had Blaine and Ella, Tyler and Logan but Burt had been there for anything Kurt needed, he was his hero, his savour and most importantly his dad.
With the flight only being a couple of hours long, they arrived soon after. Again Kurt went quiet all the taxi ride to the house, Blaine was really worried, he hated it when Kurt kept all his emotions to himself.
When they arrived at the house, they saw the living room light on. They got out the taxi, paid the driver, who then drove off on his way, and knocked on the front door.
Finn opened the door, Blaine shocked to see him here so quickly. He let them in, he told them that Carole was in her room asleep and him and Rachel were in the living room.
“Jason’s in the guest room, him and Ella can share the double and there’s two cribs for the boys” Finn told them, with a weak smile.
Blaine nodded and took the three upstairs. Finn looked at Kurt, again smiling slightly.
“You know you can talk to me about it anytime bro” he said. Kurt just shrugged his shoulders “I take it me and Blaine are in my old room” Kurt said, his voice thick and in nearly a whisper since he hadn’t talked in a couple of hours.
Finn nodded in response.
Kurt went up to his old room. They hadn’t changed it or Finn’s room since they moved out, something about remembering them or something. Kurt was happy they didn’t do anything to it, everything how he left it, other then the stuff he took with him. Which was surprisingly very little, only clothes and a few photos.
He got his pyjamas out the bag Blaine had packed, got in them and got under the covers that were neatly made.
Blaine came in a few minutes after; Ella had been asking all sorts of questions about them being here but got tired soon and fell asleep.
Blaine saw Kurt in bed, on his side facing away from him. He walked around the bed, till he got to Kurt’s side and he knelt down to be face to face with him. He reached out and moved a piece of hair that had fallen out of place ad tucked it behind his ear, but keeping his hand on his cheek.
“I know you don’t want to talk about it, but please don’t keep everything bottled up inside, I don’t want you to make yourself sick” Blaine told him, Kurt’s eyes weren’t even looking at Blaine.
Blaine blinked back the new tears in his eyes, then stood up and got out some pyjama bottoms, he stripped down, put them on then crawled in to bed.
He wrapped his arms around Kurt’s waist, pulled him close and rested his head on the back of his husbands neck. It only took Kurt a few seconds to turn around so they were now face to face.
“I love you” Kurt whispered “So so much” then wrapped his arms around Blaine’s neck and hugged him tightly.
“I know” Blaine said “And I love you more then you know, which is why I want you to tell me what your feeling, please Kurt” Blaine was nearly begging him.
Then silence fell on them, Blaine wasn’t sure what Kurt was thinking and the silence was getting to hard for him.
“Nothing” Blaine heard Kurt finally say.
Blaine looked at him in confession “What do you mean?” he asked.
“I don’t feel anything, im meant to feel pain and hurt and sorrow but nothing. I just feel empty, like a piece of my life has gone” Kurt began to cry again “and it has” he said in a whispered.
Blaine pulled him closer, if it was possible. He let out a shaky breath, trying his hardest not to let the tears in his eyes fall “I know baby, I know. I hate seeing you like this, but I know you feel terrible and im gonna help you through it. I don’t care if it takes a few months, or even a few years, I’ll be here for you Kurt” he used two fingers to lift Kurt’s head so they were looking in each others eyes “I always will be” he finished.
Kurt finally smiled, “And I’ll always be here for you” he leaned in and kissed Blaine. It wasn’t a needy or desperate kiss. It was just a kiss of gratefulness, of hope.
Of love.
And that’s what they needed, just love.
