The shorter man raised an eyebrow. "Is that hard to believe?"
Blaine was taken aback. "No, it's just... Hard to believe that you're here."
Aidan sighed, sounding almost... annoyed? "I know, I... I know. I would appreciate it if I could go see Kurt."
Blaine's eyebrows knit together. "Kurt's gone."
"...Gone? What do you mean 'gone'?"
"I mean he got discharged. You missed him."
Aidan took a step back. "That's not possible.... He was... He was dying."
Blaine scoffed. "He was never dying. He got his surgery and he was fine. He was in a lot of pain though." He crossed his arms and didn't even try to wipe the glare off his face.
Aidan met his gaze. "Well where is he?"
"I don't know. Once they're out of the hospital it's not like we can keep tabs on them."
Aidan rubbed his face. "This is just perfect."
Blaine couldn't even believe his ears. "Yeah, you abandon your fiance in his hour of need and him being out of the hospital is what's wrong."
The blonde man gave Blaine an incredulous look. "Excuse me?"
"Look," Blaine said, taking a step in. "All I'm saying is that you seriously need to get your priorities straight."
Aidan squinted his eyes. "And what gives you the right to tell me that?"
"I know Kurt. He's... He's a good guy. And what you did to him..." Blaine let his gaze fall to the floor before looking the small man straight in the eye. "Nobody deserves that. Especially not Kurt. He is one of the best people I've ever met. And he deserves better than scum like you."
He turned on his heel and walked away.
...
Rachel had to leave. It was her last rehearsal before opening night. She felt absolutely terrible leaving Kurt alone, but she had to go. Kurt insisted that he was okay.
Now he was sitting in the eerily quiet apartment alone. He got up to get something to eat, only to find that most of the food was gone. Only a few non-perishable items were left in the pantry. Kurt sighed as he grabbed a box of cereal. He vaguely wondered when the last time Aidan had even been there was. He went to the fridge and found that there was no milk either. Kurt took his dry bowl of Cheerios and sat at the couch.
He turned on the tv and did his best to let himself relax. He remembered that he had to call the box office for Rachel's show and confirm a ticket. Kurt made a mental reminder to do so before pulling the fleece blanket over himself. A nap sounded like a wonderful idea.
As Kurt drifted to sleep, he imagined dark, curly hair and a bright smile.
...
Blaine was wide awake now.
Just minutes before, he had been ready to collapse where he was standing, but now he was sitting on the edge of the bed in the on-call room seething.
God, what kind of person would ever do that to Kurt? He had wondered this several times before, but now he had a face to put with the crime. And if Blaine was being completely honest, it was a cute face. It made him hate Aidan even more.
But he ran through the conversation in his mind over and over again. Not once did Aidan express concern for Kurt's well-being. How selfish could he be?
Blaine stood up and paced the floor. What did Kurt even see in that guy anyway?
And then it hit him. Aidan was going to find Kurt. Of course he was. What if Kurt took him back? It was unthinkable. After all he had put him through?
But then again, Kurt had been so heartbroken with Aidan gone. He genuinely seemed to love that guy. And, God forbid, what if Aidan actually had a good reason to leave? Then Kurt would almost definitely take him back.
Blaine collapsed on the bed and buried his face in the pillows. If he was being totally honest, he had thought he was making some progress with Kurt. Blaine had tried his best not to fall for him, but looking back, he never stood a chance. He couldn't even pinpoint a specific moment. All he knew was that he was head over heels for Kurt. Maybe if he had realized exactly what he was feeling just a little bit earlier, he could have told Kurt and...
No. Kurt loved Aidan. Aidan did some terrible things, but maybe Kurt would forgive him. Blaine had probably never even been on his radar.
God, how could he have been so stupid?
Blaine finally understood why doctors weren't supposed to
fall for their patients. Because shit like this happened. But what was he supposed to do? He wanted to go back to all of his old teachers and mentors and say 'But how am I not supposed to get attached if my patient is the single most perfect person on the planet?'
He rolled over and stared at the ceiling.
This definitely classified as the worst hangover ever.
