"What do you think Porcelain dear?" Sue Sylvester's mocking, but at the same time, slightly affectionate voice brought Kurt out of his reverie. He saw her gesturing towards the enormous ship they were about to board. He gave a quick glance around, reaching with his eyesand gatheringwhatever he could of the Titanic, and said drily " Never been more excited". Of Sue noticed the detached tone in his voice, but chose not to comment upon it. His fiance , David Karofsky, on the other hand was'nt one to let go of a chance to taunt Kurt. With the sneer in his voice Kurt hated so much , he said " I would be showing a little more enthusiasm and gratitude at this opportunity of a lifetime for you , if I were in your position " . Kurt opened his mouth to add a biting remark of his own , but seeing the warning look Sue was giving him and the madness in David's eyes challenging eyes him to respond and be rewarded with some or the other act of violence, Kurt shut his mouth and clenched his jaw.
What David meant by 'his position'was Kurt was an orphan, with no fortune of his own, and forced to lean upon David for survival.
He had lost his mother a long time ago, when he was just a little lad, after which his father was all he had. His bond with his father, even though initially rocky, eventually turned very strong. After his wife's death leading to a long struggle and inability to bond with his carrier son, Burt Hummel finally struck a chord with his only child, during Kurt's early adolescent years. And the father son relationship was so close that, Kurt would share every aspect of his life, big or small, with Burt.Asking his father's imput and advice on anything and everything. At times, the friend Kurt found in his father, was the only friend he had .
So, when his Burt's heart stopped functioning ,and he left this world forever, the devastation which Kurt went through, would see no end. And to top it all, there wasthe advantage, people he once trusted, took of Burt's declining health in his last few days. Snatching him of his wealth and property one possession at a time. When it had reached a stage where, even paying that really experienced and high costing doctor, who was trying his best to keep Burt alive a little while longer was proving challenging, Kurt's governess, Sue Sylvester decided to intervene.
She knew Kurt, being naive and having never taken any interest in the business or monetary matters of any kind and in those days never leaving his father's bedside, would not be able to anything. So, Sue went to Paul Karosky, one of the very few of Burt's still loyal friends, who also happened to be well loaded. Paul immediately obliged, being genuinely concerned about his friend's well being, he did not need much convincing. But even though Paul's money paid for the doctor's expenses, it could not keep Burt alive for long , as his weakening heart finally took its toll on him.
As Burt was being laid to rest, another question propped up , what would become of Kurt. Being a carrier, with no fortune to back him up except his Father's old house, people wondered how many high born established young men would be eager to marry him, and how uncertain his future and well-being seemed. Sue was the one most concerned, she tried talking to Kurt about it, who , in his melancholy , just shrugged it off saying 'I'll survive'.
A few days after Burt's death , Paul, with his son David, came to visit Kurt . Paul revealed that his son came to him with the wish of marrying Kurt, and keeping Kurt's future in mind, he himself thought it was a good idea too. But Kurt had immediately but politely declined the offer , stating his 'obvious incompatibility' with David, leaving a sad but dejected Paul, and a raging and determined David.
Sue,even though she was worried about Kurt's and her own undetermined future , didn't force Kurt into accepting the offer, having herself seen David grow up, and knowing his Brute nature. But David on his part, turned out to be not only Brute but also manipulative, as a few days after his proposal being rejected, he came back, but this time without the company of his father. What he did come with were the documents of the money his father had provided for Burt's treatment, demanding that the amount be paid back, lest they wanted to lose their only posession which was the house. Sue argued , how Paul had said they could take as long as it would fit them to pay back the loan and how the value of the house was much higher than the amount they received. To which had, David replied "These matters are no longer under my father's control, I have taken over, and hence its not my father's terms and conditions you'll have to answer, but mine" , he then passed the documents in his hands to Sue and continued, "And as for the amount being lower than the value of the house, those documents and I refuse to agree with you." After glancing upon the documents and realizing that they had been tampered with, Sue had no choice but to agree on the brute's next condition of convincing Kurt to marryhim or rendering the carrier homeless andwith no fortune. So that was how Kurt came to be in this messed upsituation he was currently in.
