As the weeks went by Kurt could feel how he slowly but certainly was falling head over heels for Blaine.
Every Monday and Friday Kurt would go to the bookstore after his classes and tell Blaine what he thought of the book that Blaine had given him a few days before. Blaine would always greet him with a big smile and a new book hidden behind the counter with a little piece of paper slapped to the front cover, a single word: 'reserved'. They only ever spoke for a few minutes at a time before Blaine had to get back to the other customers and Kurt would go home to the apartment that he shared with Rachel and tell her all about it and as he lay in bed at night he would realize that his feelings had grown since the last time he had seen Blaine. Each day he feel a little harder.
One Friday Kurt went to the bookstore and found Blaine behind the counter where he was wrapping up a couple of children books for an older lady. Kurt's heart flew straight to his throat at the sight of Blaine.
The woman took the bag with the books from him as he handed it to her. "Thank-you, young man" she said, gave him a fond smile and then started off towards the door.
Blaine quickly flew to the door and held it open for her as she left. "Have a good day" Blaine called after her and closed the door. Then he saw Kurt. His eyes lit up and he hurried over to Kurt.
"Hi!"
Kurt bit his lip. "Hi."
"So?" Blaine did a dramatic gesture with his hands.
Kurt took a deep breath and when he spoke he spoke quickly. "I really liked the way Victor Hoppe was described because I didn't hate him but at the same time I simply couldn't love him and that was very interesting. Seriously that book gave me chills - and not in the good 'oh-this-is-so-sweet'-way. You literally killed me with that book."
Blaine giggled. "I knew you'd like it."
"I didn't say I liked it."
"Oh but you so did."
"Yeah I did."
"I am an excellent book picker am I not?"
"Well, if you by excellent mean caused me a stroke then yes. My roommate thought I had gone nuts. It was bad."
Blaine smiled that pretty smile of his and Kurt melted. "Probably not as bad as when I got so frustrated at the book that I threw it out the window."
"You did not."
"Sure did. Then ran down three flights of stairs and had to apologize to an old man who almost got hit by it. It was quite embarrassing."
Kurt shook his head in disbelief but couldn't help but giggle.
"I still freaked out more than you."
"Didn't you hear that I threw it out the window?"
"Yes I did, but still."
"10 bucks you didn't."
Kurt smirked. "Deal."
Blaine leaned against the counter. "Give it a go then."
"Prepare to lose 10 bucks then. I pretty much yelled at the book during the third part and my neighbor apparently thought I was being attacked by a serial killer so she called the police and I had a hell of a time trying to explain to the police officer why I had yelled like that. Apparently it isn't normal to scream "you sick bastard, why are you trying to kill me?" at a book."
Blaine broke down laughing and tears ran down his cheeks. Kurt laughed along and it felt nice to be able to share the moment with him. Blaine had an adorable laughter. He could defiantly get used to this.
"Oh my God."
"I win."
Blaine pulled a 10 dollar note from his wallet and handed it over to Kurt who gave a small bow as he took it.
"You're unbelievable."
"But I made 10 bucks. Not too bad, huh?"
Blaine smiled and reached behind the counter. He grabbed a book and gave it to Kurt.
"I promise this is not as bad as the last one."
"I hope not because my neighbor is not very fond of me at the moment."
They smiled at each other for a moment. Kurt could feel his heart beat so fast that it felt as if it was going to explode from pure happiness. He loved how it was so easy to talk to Blaine. He just blurted out whatever he was thinking and Blaine would always smile or laugh and Kurt would feel as if the angels were singing. Okay, he didn't believe in angels but he was sure that if he did then the angels would look exactly like the beautiful man in front of him.
Kurt looked at the watch on his wrist. "Damn, I have to get going."
Blaine waved as Kurt left the store and maybe he imagined it but he was sure that he saw Blaine's smile fade a bit when he had said he had to go.
~~~~~~~~
Kurt was lying in bed reading that night when he came across something odd. One of the words in the book was highlighted. A neon yellow line had been drawn in the middle of the page, straight through a single word: You.
Kurt sat up straight and stared at the page. The word stared back at him and it almost glowed in the dim light from the lamp on the nightstand besides his bed.
You.
It must be a mistake. Someone must have highlighted the word by mistake. Or maybe it had happened when it had been printed. Surely it had been a mistake.
He continued reading though he was still a little suspicious. A few pages later another word was highlighted: never.
He quickly flicked through the next couple of pages and more words were highlighted. He grabbed the notebook and the pen on his nightstand, that was there so he could write ideas for his outfits at all times, and started scribbling down the words. The words turned into a simple sentence.
You never told me your name.
~~~~~~
The door bell rang as Kurt pushed the door to the bookstore open and walked in. His palms were sweaty and he could feel a lump form in his throat. It was Monday and it was cloudy with light rain that came and went making it almost impossible to dress properly. He walked the few steps to the counter and rang the bell that called for assistance. Blaine emerged from the back room almost instantly as if he'd been waiting for Kurt to arrive.
He wasn't wearing a bow tie today but had a scarf wrapped loosely around his neck and a long-sleeved striped sweater that suited the weather a lot more than his usual cardigans. His yellow pants hung low on his hips and made something just below Kurt's belt tighten.
"Hey." Blaine greeted him happily and grabbed a box of books that he then carried over to the bookcase where he started organizing the books and putting them in under the right names on the shelves. Kurt followed and observed him as he worked.
"It was a good book."
Blaine smiled. "You should know by now that the books I pick are always good."
"Whatever makes you happy."
Blaine laughed and put the last books in place before turning to face Kurt. His dark thick lashes framed his brown eyes in the most beautiful way that Kurt had ever seen.
"I've found a good one for you" Blaine happily said and waved Kurt towards the counter. As he walked into the back room to get it Kurt slid something out of his coat pocket.
Blaine returned with a thick white book that he slammed down on the counter.
"Here it is" he made a dramatic gesture as if he was showing Kurt a piece of heaven. "This right here is a well-written masterpiece according to me and several critics. You're going to love it or I will beat you with a stick. Now you're warned."
Kurt laughed and picked up the book. He glanced over the backside and skimmed through the text.
"Yeah the description doesn't do it justice" Blaine admitted and pulled his shoulders. "But do they ever?"
Kurt smiled and as Blaine turned to yell something to one of his co-workers Kurt had a few brief seconds to admire Blaine from behind. The pants tightened in just the right places and Kurt could feel himself droll at the sight. Because that was not a bad sight.
Blaine turned back to Kurt. "There's some pretty direct descriptions of unpleasant events so I hope you can handle it."
Kurt cocked an eyebrow. "Last time I ended up with the police at my apartment. I think we both know how well I handle 'unpleasant events'."
Blaine laughed and Kurt couldn't help but laugh right along. He felt something twist inside of him. This was nice. More than nice really. Being able to share jokes like this, able to let the dorky side of himself through. It wasn't just nice. It was great.
The only persons he'd ever been able to be with in such a way was his dad, Carole and Rachel and it had taken nearly two years for him to warm up to Rachel. It had only taken a few minutes of talking with Blaine.
They knew nothing about each other. He had no idea exactly how old Blaine was or what he did in his spare time. He didn't even know if Blaine studied when he wasn't working. But he didn't need to know these things to feel comfortable around him. But he wanted to know though.
He wanted to know whether or not Blaine had siblings and what his favourite food was. He wanted to know his work schedule and what his coffee order was. If he even drank coffee.
And the more time Kurt spend around Blaine the more he wanted to know these things.
"So you come back Friday and tell me what you think, right?"
"Um yeah, sure."
Blaine frowned. "Is it too soon? Because if it is you could just come back another time and -"
"Blaine, it's perfect" Kurt interrupted him. "I don't need more time than that. I like a challenge. Now calm down. Are you on your period or something?"
Blaine laughed uncontrollably and had to support himself against the counter.
"My period? Well, that's a new one."
Kurt could feel his chest grow warmer as Blaine laughed and the fact that Kurt had made him laugh like that mad him feel as if he was the happiest man in the world. I wish I could hear him laugh like that every day.
"I have to get going or my food will be burnt when I get home" Kurt said with regret when Blaine finally got a grip on himself.
"Your food will burn?"
"Well, my roommate is an awful cook and if I don't get home soon then I'm sure that my food will be poisonous."
"First burnt and now poisonous?"
"Yes, unless I have time to stop her."
Blaine nodded as if to himself as Kurt said his goodbyes and left through the door.
~~~~~~~
Blaine watched as Kurt left through the door and couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed that the moment that he had waited for all weekend, since Friday afternoon when Kurt had left, had already passed.
He then noticed something odd.
On the counter was a glass jar with a little sign that said 'tips'. It had been his boss' idea and a few dollars could be scraped together from the little puddle of coins in it. But on top of the coins was a folded piece of paper.
He slid his hand down into the jar and picked up the paper before unfolding it and reading what it said:
Kurt
