That is the text Blaine received randomly during the week after Sectionals. He hadn’t given Kurt his number, in fact he’s actually been consciously forcing him self not to think about Kurt- meaning his unconscious was running wild. He was dreaming about Kurt every night. About the way Kurt had been glowing after he came off stage, imagining his singing voice, picturing him in a Dalton Academy uniform.
So when he received the text, while on a date with Sebastian, he quickly looked at it and shoved his phone back in his pocket. Sebastian and him were discussing ways to convince his father to let him stay in the Warblers.
“I mean, when we got home he said we should have won. That means something, right?”
“Yeah, that means he was paying attention. Maybe he was just saying he’d make you quit to scare you?”
“My dad doesn’t just say stuff. He doesn’t want all his work friends knowing he has a gay son.”
“Well. What are you going to do?”
Sebastian paused, sipping his coffee. Blaine could tell he really didn’t have a clue what he was going to do. “We’ll see, I guess.”
Later when Blaine was home alone he spent 20 minutes writing and re-writing the perfect response to Kurt.
He finally settled on:
Okay. Meet me at The Lima Bean tomorrow . 4:30.
He knew Sebastian would be driving his little sister to dance practice and then had his own Lacross practice and he’d have a window of time to meet with Kurt without fear of the boyfriend’s wrath.
The next day, which was a Thursday, Blaine was extremely anxious all day. And it showed. He was quiet throughout Warbler practice as he thought about his pending meeting with Kurt. They hadn’t been alone since that time Blaine ran into Kurt in the hallway at Dalton. Blaine suddenly remembered the hug. Kurt had hugged him.
Does this mean we’re going to hug again this time?
After kissing Sebastian goodbye and dropping off his school things at home Blaine headed for The Lima Bean a little early. After ordering a coffee Blaine walked right past his regular table for the comfy chairs that were placed in the corner of the shop. They were usually occupied by business men or teenagers on lap tops, but no one seemed to be sitting there that day. He knew Kurt would think of this as a ‘spontaneous decision’ to sit somewhere new, but Blaine honestly felt like he’d be betraying Sebastian even more if he sat with Kurt at their regular table.
He sat down and just waited, thinking about what Kurt could possibly want to talk about. His stomach was hurting him because he was so nervous. The words ‘I need to talk to you’ were pretty notorious for preceding bad news.
“HeY.” Blaine looked up to see Kurt standing over him.
“Hey, Kurt,” There was an awkward moment when he contemplated standing up to hug Kurt, or shake his hand, but instead Kurt took the seat next to him.
“So first of all, where did you get my number?”
“Well dang. I figured since I asked to talk to you I would get to ask the questions.” he sounded more amused than annoyed.
“I think you at least own me an answer to that!”
“Alright, alright. Facebook.”
“You stalked me?” Blaine raised an eyebrow.
r32;Kurt laughed. “Call it what you will. We’re in rival show choirs, we’re bound to have mutual friends.”
“Makes sense.” They both reached for their coffees at the same time and made eye contact. Blaine looked away quickly and they both took sips to mask the awkward feeling. “So...what did you want to talk about?”
“Is Sebastian going to give me hell if I transfer to Dalton?” Kurt stated abruptly.
“Is...what?” Blaine was completely caught off guard.
“Look. I already have this Neanderthal at school who is hell-bent on torturing me. I’m not trying to go from one bully to another. I was kind of looking for somewhere where I could feel welcome, you know? And it seems like Dalton is a bit more tolerant of open homosexuality than McKinley is.” This was the first time Kurt had actually confirmed to Blaine that he was gay, even though he already knew. Blaine thought it took a lot of courage for Kurt to say all of these things to someone he barely knew. It almost made Blaine feel like he would be responsible for Kurt’s happiness at Dalton.
“I’m so sorry I had no idea.”
“That I’m gay?” Kurt joked.
Blaine kept his tone serious, “That you’re bullied.”
“Well, I am the only openly gay kid at school...”
“If I talked to Sebastian, maybe told him the situation, he’d probably leave you alone.” Blaine said the words, but he knew how difficult that task would be.
“I really appreciate it. Because I’ve already made up my mind about transferring, but obviously I’d want to be in Glee club...so I’d kind of have to be around you guys.”
“Oh my gosh I totally forgot. Congrats on winning sectionals. You guys...totally deserved it.”
“Thank you. You didn’t have to add that last part. I saw you run off stage, you seemed pretty upset.”
Blaine blushed, “It was mostly Sebastian, winning meant a lot to him.”
“If it means anything...I really loved your duet. You sounded amazing.”
“You were listening?”
“Of course I was listening...”
“It’s kinda funny that we didn’t know we were in rival show choirs.”
“How do I know that little ‘Oh, I thought you were my boyfriend’ stunt wasn’t just your method of spying on me?”
“Yes, because sneaking up on you in a coffee shop is the best way yo get a leg up on the competition.”
Those playful sarcastic exchanges were what Blaine loved about his conversations with Kurt. He didn’t feel constantly on edge, instead Kurt had a warm presence that calmed him. It was like they were old friends who were just catching up over a cup of coffee. Blaine went back and forth from feelings comfortable about being with Kurt to paranoid when he thought about sneaking behind Sebastian’s back.
Kurt seemed to read Blaine’s mind. “So, Sebastian doesn’t mind you meeting me here?”
“Not so much that he doesn’t mind... as much as he doesn’t know.”
“Oh, I’ve never been someone’s dirty little secret before.”
“That is inappropriate, Kurt, this is a business meeting!” They were laughing together. To anyone else they would have looked like a couple. Blaine wondered what Kurt thought they were. Were they friends, or were they just close acquaintances? “So when are you transferring?”
“Well it’s not for sure yet. The only issue left is money. And my Dad just got married, and he’s kind of sick so I feel bad making him do this for me. Even though he insists it’s fine.”
“Well tell me your whole life story, why don’t you?” Blaine teased Kurt.
“Oh, you didn’t know this was also a therapy session? It’s court mandated though, so I don’t have to pay you.” Kurt stuck his tongue out at Blaine and Blaine almost dared him to look cuter. He didn’t know how much longer they could talk without crossing the boarder into an inappropriate meeting.
“Well, you’ll definitely be a great addition to the Warblers.”
“You mean I’ll definitely be a HUGE competition for solos and duets?”
“Psh. I haven’t even heard you sing yet. Why don’t you sing something right now!”
“What? You’re crazy, Blaine. I have nothing to prove to you.”
“You’re scared!”
“And you’re not going to pressure me into singing in the middle of a The Lima Bean. I have a reputation to uphold. And that does not involve being an insane person.”
“OH WHATEVER!” Blaine was flirting. This was flirting. Everything about the situation was wrong but it felt so right to Blaine
They continued talking and teasing each other for a little longer until Blaine looked at his phone and realized the time.
“Oh, shit. It’s 6:00!”
“That it is. Great observation, Blaine.” He took a sip from his third cup of coffee.
“Well I don’t know about you but I will be up for days with the amount of coffee I have drank."
“Not to mention you need the money for hair gel! I can only assume you go through a bottle a week.”
“Oh, shut up.”
“It was nice talking to you, Blaine. At least I know I’ll have one friend at Dalton.”
“Yeah.” They smiled at each other. Blaine didn’t know what was going to happen but when he was looking into Kurt’s eyes he didn’t feel worried about the future, or Sebastian, or anything in his life. He just wanted to stay in that moment forever.
