When Kurt woke up the next morning, he was warm; almost too warm. He opened his eyes to find himself face to face with Blaine, who was still sleeping. He started to move closer but Blaine tried to pull him closer- as if that were possible. The small movement made Kurt aware that every inch of his body was flush against Blaine’s. He tried to move again, but Blaine’s arms kept him in place. As he struggled, Blaine started whining.
“Nooo,” he groaned. “Wanna sleep.”
“You can sleep,” Kurt told him. “But I need to get up.”
“Wanna sleep with you,” Blaine said.
“Do you now?” Kurt asked voice coy. Blaine’s eyes shot open.
“Not like that! I mean- that’s not-“Blaine backtracked. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
“It’s ok. I know what you meant,” Kurt assured him. “But we do need to get up.”
“Ok,” Blaine groaned, finally letting Kurt out of the bed. “What time is it?”
“7:30. I’m gonna go change,” Kurt replied, picking up the stack of clothes he had worn the day before. Blaine nodded, waiting until Kurt was in the bathroom before walking to his closet, pulling out jeans and a polo shirt. He had just finished dressing when Kurt walked back in.
“Are you about ready?” Blaine asked. Kurt nodded and gathered his things. They walked downstairs and out to the driveway, where Kurt looked surprised to see his car.
“Did you drive us here yesterday?” he asked.
“I did,” Blaine confirmed. “Do you not remember?”
“I kind of do,” Kurt said, getting into the driver’s side. “But I didn’t think you could drive.”
“Of course I can drive,” Blaine said as they backed out of the driveway.
“Then why don’t you have a car?” Kurt wondered. “I’m sure your family could afford it.”
“I used to have a car,” Blaine said quietly.
“What happened?” Kurt questioned.
“My parents sold it when I came out,” Blaine answered flatly.
Kurt hadn’t been expecting that. “Blaine, I’m so sorry.”
Blaine shrugged. “That’s also when they started to travel all the time. Coincidence, huh?”
It was quiet for the rest of the ride. When they pulled into Kurt’s driveway, Blaine could tell he was nervous.
“Kurt, it’s ok.” Blaine soothed. “I’ll be there the whole time.”
Kurt nodded and they walked inside.
“Dad?” Kurt called out.
“In the kitchen!” Mr. Hummel called back.
Kurt led him down the hall and into the kitchen, where a man and woman sat at the table. They didn't look surprised to see him.
"Dad, Carol, this is Blaine," Kurt introduced him. "Blaine, this is my dad and stepmom."
"Nice to meet you Mr. and Mrs. Hummel," Blaine greeted.
"Call me Burt," the man instructed.
"And I'm Carole,"the woman said, standing up. "How about we go into the living room and let these two talk?"
Blaine glanced at Kurt, who gave him a small nod. He smiled and Carole and followed her out of the kitchen.
The living room was small but cozy. One couch and two recliners faced the tv. Carole and Blaine sat down on the couch.
"So Blaine, what brings you to Lima?" Carole asked.
"Actually, my parents have always lived here," Blaine told her. "I moved back in with them not too long ago."
"Really? Where were you before?"
"Dalton Academy. It's not too far from here."
Suddenly, there was a commotion in the kitchen.
"What?!" Burt shouted. "No. I'm not gonna calm down!"
"Dad, your heart!" Kurt said loudly. He continued to talk, but in a much quieter tone.
"I know about Dalton," Carole drew Blaine's attention back to her. "It's a great school. Why did you leave?"
"My parents didn't want to pay the tuition anymore," Blaine said simply.
Carole nodded, not pushing Blaine to elaborate. Before she could say anything else, Kurt and Burt walked into the room. Kurt looked as though he had been crying and Burt was red in the face.
"Carole," Kurt said in a small voice. "Do you want to help me make breakfast?"
"Sure, honey," Carole agreed, standing up. "How about waffles?"
"Sounds great," Burt said, sitting in the spot Carole had just vacated. "We'll join you in just a minute."
Blaine looked at Kurt, who gave him a small smile. Ok. If Burt wanted to talk to him, he would. For Kurt.
"So, Kurt told me everything," Burt started.
Blaine nodded. "I'm sure that wasn't easy."
"It wasn't," Burt agreed. "He said you saved him?"
Blaine was surprised at his words. "Well, I mean, I pulled Karofsky off of him."
"Did you know Carole is a nurse?" Burt asked.
Blaine shook his head, surprised at the turn of conversation.
"Well, she is. And she was working at the hospital last night," Burt told him. "When she heard that a young man from McKinley was being brought in, she got kinda nervous."
Blaine paled, knowing where Burt was going with this.
"She recognized Karofsky- knew him from the football team," Burt continued. "She said he was pretty bad off. But he refused to tell anybody who beat him up. Do you have any idea what happened?"
Blaine's silence confirmed Burt's thoughts.
"That's what I thought. So Blaine, thank you for saving my son."
Burt stuck his hand out and Blaine shook it. "You're welcome Mr. Humm- Burt."
Burt smiled. "Now how about some food?"
The two stood and walked I to the kitchen, where Carole was setting a large plate of waffles on the table, in front of Kurt. Blaine slid into the chair next to him and reached for his hand.
“You ok?” Kurt asked softly. Blaine nodded and squeezed Kurt’s hand before reaching over and spearing a waffle with his fork, which he dropped on Kurt’s plates. He grabbed another waffle for himself, missing the small smile Carole gave Kurt.
“Hope you like sugar-free syrup,” Burt said to Blaine. “Kurt won’t let us buy the good kind.”
“It’s fine, sir,” Blaine assured him as Kurt rolled his eyes. It was quiet for a moment as everyone began to eat. Finally, Burt cleared his throat, breaking the silence.
“Kurt,” he said. “I know you don’t want to talk about it anymore, but we have got to get some stuff hammered out.”
Kurt looked nervous, but nodded.
“We're gonna press charges. No question about it," Burt continued. "But trials can take time and I don't feel good with you at the same school as that boy."
“You can’t make me leave McKinley, Dad!” Kurt protested.
“I don’t want to, bud, but you aren’t safe there,” Burt told him.
“If I may,” Blaine interjected before Kurt could reply. “I have a suggestion.”
“Let’s hear it, kid,” Burt said.
“Why don’t you have a meeting with Principal Figgins and Karofsky’s parents? Explain the situation. His parents need to know and I'm sure Figgins doesn't want, um, that kind of person at his school."
“That sounds like a great idea, Blaine!” Carole enthused.
“It’ll be a good start,” Burt agreed. “Alright. You boys go rest. I’ll call and set up a meeting for first thing tomorrow."
Blaine noticed that Kurt wasn't saying anything.
"Do you want to show me your room?" He asked. Kurt nodded and they went upstairs, leaving Burt and Carole to search for Lima lawyers.
Kurt led Blaine down the hall and into his room. Blaine barely had time to look around before Kurt was looking at him with wide, tear filled eyes.
"Hey, shhh, shhh," Blaine comforted. "What's going on?"
"Blaine, I'm scared," Kurt whispered. "What is they don't believe me? What if he comes back? I'm so scared."
Blaine felt a sense of protectiveness surge through him as he pulled Kurt into his arms and tucked his head in the crook of Blaine's neck. "It's gonna be hard, Kurt, I'm not gonna lie. But you have your dad and Carole, you've got all your friends, and you've got me. We will l be here for you. And you know what else you've got?"
Kurt shook his head.
"Courage. You've got so much courage, Kurt. I know you can get through this because you've already gotten through so much! You can do anything, ok?" Blaine finished.
Kurt raised his head and gave him a watery smile. "Ok."
Comments
This was awesome. I love that Blaine is protective of Kurt and that he is able to get along with Burt and Carole. I can't wait to see what happens next.
