Kurt Anderson is happy. Really, he is. But sometimes, he has that feeling. Loneliness. Emptiness. He calls it lemptiness. And that needs a new name, but Kurt doesn't care. His dorm mate, Trent, says he knows the feeling, but what Kurt feels is unreal. And it shouldn't be. His friends are amazing. All the Warblers, especially Trent, Wes, Nick, Jeff, David and Thad. That's his group. They do everything together, but Trent is definitely his best friend, because they share a room.
They share it at the all boys private boarding school Dalton Academy, in Westerville. His parents sent him there after he got problems at his old school. Kurt is gay and his parents know it. They put him there for "his own safety," but Kurt suspects that there's another reason. Since he came out to his parents, they started acting different. They didn't feel like his parents anymore.
Actually, they never did.
Kurt doesn't know why. There was never a connection. The only connection he had with a relative was with his brother Cooper, but he moved to LA. He is a famous commercial star and barely speaks to Kurt anymore.
--------------------------------------------------------
'Kurt?' It was Trent. 'Huh, what?' 'I was waiting for you,' Trent says, 'Warbler practice, remember?' The Warblers are Dalton's a cappella glee club. Kurt had a lot of solo's, but you can't call him the leader, because they have a council. Kurt still thinks that Wes is in love with is gavel. He always takes it to his dorm or to his home when he's not staying here.
One of the cool thing about Dalton is that you can choose if you want to board or not. You can even switch. Kurt chose boarding.
'You felt lempty again?' Trent asks. Kurt nods. 'It's so rare, Trent,' he says. 'I know,' Trent sighs. No you don't, Kurt thinks, but instead of telling him he gives him his most convincing fake smile and nods.
--------------------------------------------------------
'Okay, guys,' David starts, but no one is listening. One of the Warblers, Jason, got something new from his rich daddy and he want so show it. 'Guys?' 'Order!' Wes shouts while hitting the table with his gavel, 'Order! Tape recorder!' Everyone stops and stares to him. 'What?' Wes asks.
'Back to business,' David says quickly, 'Sectionals is in a few weeks and we are giving away solo's!' Everyone cheers. 'Of course our beloved Kurt Anderson gets one,' Thad adds, 'and the winners of the auditions are.... Nick and Jeff. Congrats.' Nick and Jeff hug each other and do a silent Macarena. Kurt is happy until he hears something.
'Whose phone is that?' Thad asks. It's Kurt's. And he knows it's his family. He has a special ringtone for his dad. His dad barely calls, so it must be serious. 'Mine,' Kurt raises his hand, 'I can hear it's my dad. Can I-' Wes nods.
'Dad?' 'Kurt?' 'Yes?' 'Kurt Devon Anderson, get dressed, step in your car and drive home as soon as possible, okay?' 'Why?' Kurt asks, but the line is already dead. 'Sorry guys, my dad wants me to come home. It sounds serious.' The council nods. 'Warbler Kurt is allowed to leave this meeting earlier, because of personal reasons,' David says and Kurt leaves.
He runs to his room, that is, god bless, on the second floor. Changes his outfit to something that is quite comfortable and not "too much," and runs to the Dalton parking lot. He has a Prius. Gift from his parents to show him that theydocare.
They don't.
--------------------------------------------------------
He parks in front of his mason. He still has a room there, for when he's home, so you can say it's pretty useless. He gets out of his car and walks to the front door.
Before Kurt could ring the bell, his mom, Celia, opens the door. 'Mom, what's up?' Kurt asks but Celia ignores him and his dad, Devon, shows up. 'Kurt, step in the car right now,' he demands. 'Where we going?' Kurt asks. 'Lima,' his dad answers. 'Lima? But that's two hours from here!' 'Well, we need to!' his mom says, 'The Lima hospital called us.'
'What does the Lima hospital want?' Kurt asks. 'Goddamnit, Kurt,' his father shouts, 'Just get in the car!' Kurt does as he says.
His parents didn't speak for an hour. Kurt tried to have a conversation several times, but all attempts failed miserably. Then his mother says: 'Kurt, we have bad news.' 'What is it?' Kurt asks nervously. 'You'll find out,' his dad says before his mom could say anything. 'Well, what is as bad as hiding something, that sounds awfully important, from your own son?' Kurt asks shamelessly. 'Well, that's it, Kurt,' his dad says, eyes still focussing on the road.
'You aren't our son.'
--------------------------------------------------------
Kurt was confused. 'What do you mean, I'm not your son?' he asks angrily, nearly screaming. 'Calm down, Kurt,' his mom says. 'No mom, I won't' 'I'm not your-' 'Then explain it to me!' Celia sighs. 'The hospital called. There was a boy, Blaine Hummel is his name, I think, wanted a DNA-test. We don't know why. And with his results, they found out that he is our son.' 'What? But how?'
'You've been switched at birth.'
--------------------------------------------------------
Kurt felt sick. Those people in this car aren't his parents. They never were. Cooper was never his brother. That boy, Blaine, is their son and brother.
Now he finally gets where the lemptiness is coming from. He missed his birth parents, without knowing it. He wonders if that Blaine kid felt the same. They're almost at the hospital and Kurt feels he's nervous. He is gonna meet his parents. Maybe they gave him his love for fashion and music, because these two in the car didn't. He wonders if he looks like his mom or dad. If he has siblings. What kind of life he should have.
--------------------------------------------------------
'Oh mr. and ms. Anderson,' a woman in a ugly white suit says, 'I'm glad you could make it. I'm Mary and-' 'How could this have happened?' Celia starts crying. 'We don't know ma'am, and I'm so sorry. Nut you've raised another handsome boy, so that's a good point. Devon mutters something.
'Ma'am, your real son is inside,' Mary says, and Kurt feels anger. So, he's not their real son? They raised him, until he came out and things became akward. 'You're ready to meet him?' Celia nods.
Kurt wants to hit the boy who is standing in the room next to theirs. That he did this to him and his parents.
He doesn't want to meet him.
But he has to support his not-parents. One kast thing he could do for them, as a son.
Mary opens the door and his not-parents go first. Kurt hesitates, but follows them inside.
And his heart stops.
