Chapter 8
“What?” both Blaine and Kurt shouted at the same moment.
Wes shrugged. “We decided that your voices would sound nicely together. And two boys singing a love song would–”
Blaine couldn’t believe what was happening. Somehow he felt betrayed. He had told them he didn’t want to sing this time and they gave him a duet. And with nobody else but Chalmers.
“Excuse me? A love song?” Kurt asked, disgust in his face.
“Yes,” David answered, “you heard correctly. We thought that two boys singing a love song would be unexpected and may help us win. Especially given your talents”
“No way–” Blaine started to protest.
Sebastian raised his hand slowly. “Remember the rules, Anderson. You told us yourself ‘there will be no changes done to the choice of songs or singers’. I’m sure you won’t want to break more rules than you already have.”
A few people nodded in agreement but froze after Blaine looked angrily at them.
“Rules could be changed. Then we wouldn’t need to break them,” Trent suggested shyly.
Kurt nodded. “Of course. I mean, if Blaine is too scared of singing a duet with me, we should give him an option to choose. It’s only fair.”
“I’m not scared,” Blaine growled. “I just don’t want to have a lead in this competition.”
That was true. He didn’t want to get more attention than necessary because the competition was held in his old school and they were facing their glee club. He didn’t think that any jock would go see the performances or be in the glee club but he couldn’t help it – he would feel much better being in the background where people could hardly see him.
Jeff coughed to get everyone’s attention. “Oh, and I thought that the Warblers were all about what’s good for the team… I guess, I was wrong,” he shrugged innocently.
“Exactly,” Wes nodded. “That’s why we are all going to follow the rules, aren’t we?”
Blaine met Wes’ gaze and nodded slowly. It was obvious that he didn’t want to agree but the other boy didn’t care as long as this would benefit his friend in a long term.
“Decided,” Wes exclaimed with a struck of a gavel.
<~*~>
“What are you planning to do after the dinner?” Jeff asked when they both found a table and sat down next to each other, placing their trays of food on it.
Kurt thought for a second. As always he had a lot of homework. He caught up with everything but everyday teachers gave a lot of new stuff to do or prepare for.
“I need to get ready for that geography test. It’s in two days and I haven’t even started. I’m so going to fail it…”
Jeff laughed. “You? Fail something? Impossible. If you want I can help you. I will ask you questions and you will give me all the correct answers because I’m sure you already know everything.”
“You are overestimating my knowledge, even though it’s flattering,” Kurt smiled.
“What is the longest river in Europe?” Jeff asked.
“Volga,” Kurt answered without even thinking. “Is that correct?”
Jeff put a piece of a meatball in his mouth. “How would I know?” he asked with his mouth full.
“Well, you asked me.”
“And you answered. I trust you – Volda it is,” he smirked.
“Volga,” Kurt giggled.
“Whatever. So what’s the deal with Anderson?” Jeff asked after looking around to see that nobody could hear them; especially not Blaine who, luckily, was sitting too far from them to hear anything. “You looked eager to sing with him.”
Kurt drank some juice and glimpsed at where Blaine was. Their eyes met for a fraction of a second before they both looked away. “I wasn’t but when I saw how reluctant he was, I thought it would be fun. I mean, if he is not happy about us singing a love song, I’m all for it.”
“You are so mean,” Jeff laughed and shouldered the boy playfully.
“No, this is me being nice. Someone had to teach him.”
“Oh, and it totally has nothing to do with you liking him,” Jeff smirked.
Kurt snarled. ‘I told you I. Don’. Like. Him. Yes, he is hot but the way he acts…”
“So it’s totally his personality?”
“Yes!”
Jeff snickered. It was funny how Kurt couldn’t see how obvious he was. “I would say, Wes and David are just as bad if not worse but I don’t hear you complaining. I’m just saying…”
“Maybe if I knew how to get back at them, I would. Come on, look happy or whatever,” he instructed.
Jeff rolled his eyes. “Very informative, thank you very much,” he said but smiled genuinely at Kurt.
Kurt placed a hand on Jeff’s knee and started to move it up slowly. He knew that Blaine could see what he was doing from where he was sitting. If only he looked at them…
“You are enjoying this way too much,” Jeff laughed silently into Kurt’s ear.
“I figured if he actually likes me then I can get back at him for being an ass. He can make fun of me as long as I know that I can torture him my own way,” Kurt smirked and kissed Jeff’s cheek. “This is so much fun.”
Jeff pressed their foreheads together. “I told my girlfriend about this. She was laughing so hard I was afraid she lost her mind.”
“And I’m losing my mind,” Kurt said much louder when he saw Blaine passing by.
Jeff looked straight into Kurt’s eyes. “Kiss me?”
Kurt gave him a tiny sweet smile and leaned to kiss the boy. He was dreading for it because he had never kissed a straight friend, even if his girlfriend was fine with that (bless the girl). He was afraid that maybe their short friendship could not survive this whole act. But Jeff was cool with that, what are friends for? he answered with a question when Kurt asked if he hadn’t changed his mind.
However, he wasn’t about to find it out soon because once there was just a tiny gap between their lips, Jeff felt some liquid on his head and pulled away. He found his hair soaked with juice and Blaine standing next to them.
“I’m sorry,” he said calmly. “I tripped and spilled my drink. I’m so clumsy.”
“What’s your problem?” Kurt asked rising from his seat.
“Honey, it’s okay,” Jeff tried to calm him down. “I’m fine.”
Kurt didn’t look at him. “It’s not okay for this poor excuse for a human being to be treating you like this! Yes, Anderson, you can act like an ass towards me but leave my boyfriend out of this! He has never done anything to you. And neither have I. Geez, can’t you just fuck off and continue living your pitiful life somewhere else? Another universe would be perfect, thank you very much.”
By the end of his speech Kurt was fuming. The whole cafeteria was silent, waiting for Blaine to respond. Jeff took Kurt’s hand and waited with everyone.
“We need to practice the song. I will meet you in two hours,” he said and walked away, leaving Kurt speechless.

“Do you think you could ever forgive me for that?”
“No.”
