Chapter 7

“Excuse me?” Kurt asked, eyeing Blaine in confusion.

“What are you doing?” Wes hissed.

Blaine shrugged. “Kurt has a nice voice; I think we should use him. ‘It’, I mean it, not him. The voice,” Blaine coughed uncomfortably.

Kurt decided to ignore Blaine’s words and simply shook his head. “I just joined. There are people who have been in the Warblers for years. They deserve the solo more than I do.”

“You won’t have any other choice,” Blaine smirked. “We will choose a song that only a countertenor would be able to sing. And then you will have to do it. Besides, we also have a rule – once we decide on a song or a singer, it can’t be changed.”

Wes and David were speechless for a moment. Yes, Kurt had a great voice and him singing a solo was a good idea. But it was strange to see Blaine just giving a solo away. Of course, nobody (except maybe Sebastian) would dare to question their choice to not have auditions for it but as far as they remembered it had never happened before. There was a serious conversation waiting for the three of them.

“And what if I still say no?” Kurt asked, feeling less and less afraid of the boys each time he had to deal with them.

“You better not,” David grinned.

Kurt snickered. “It’s getting old, guys… Not that I’m daring you into anything but have you noticed how many times you have threaten me but you actually never done anything? I mean, you either man up and prove your threats or stop all of this because it’s getting really really boring.”

Once the words were out Kurt couldn’t believe he actually said that. But he couldn’t take that back so he just stood there trying to keep a brave facade. He just hoped that Jeff was right and he didn’t just wave a red flag at a bull.

There was something weird in Blaine’s eyes for a second but it soon faded away; Kurt thought it was a trick of light because after a moment they were all laughing, however, not the way they did before he interrupted. That was a genuine laughter, while this one was forced and cold.

“So I will be going now,” Kurt said and faked a yawn to show how disinterested he was. None of them stopped him so he left and closed the doors.

The moment the doors were closed they all stopped laughing.

“Spit it out,” Wes said looking straight at Blaine.

“What?” Blaine asked not knowing what his friend was talking about.

“You and Chalmers,” David explained shortly.

Blaine raised his eyebrow. “I still don’t get it.”

“You just gave him a solo.”

“I knew he would say no,” Blaine shrugged. “I like toying with him. It’s fun. Now he will spend the whole night thinking about it, trying to figure out our angle here, arguing with himself whether or not he should agree. It will eat him alive.”

“You want to torture him?” Wes asked.

“Yes.”

“You want him to spend a sleepless night?” David asked him with a mischievous smirk on his face.

“Yes.”

“You want to toy with him?” Wes asked looking completely innocent.

“Yes.”

“You want to kiss him?”

“Yes.”

“Aha! I knew it!” David shouted.

“What? No! You tricked me!” Blaine frowned but a blush gave him away.

Wes laughed and clapped. “Oh my god! You like him, don’t you?”

“No!” Blaine tried to defend himself but it was impossible with his friends laughing so hard. “Okay, he is pretty but that’s it. And he is either with that Brittany or Jeff, god knows which one. Come on, guys, stop it.”

Wes looked at David with a huge grin, totally ignoring Blaine, and they both nodded.

“What does that mean?” Blaine frowned.

“Has anyone told you that you are adorable when you are mad?” Wes mocked Blaine.

“Fuck off,” Blaine snapped and stood up.

The boys giggled. “You know, if you want Chalmers, you will have to change the attitude. I think this ‘bad boy’ show is not his thing,” David said just before Blaine left the room.

Once he closed the doors he almost slammed into someone. Kurt. With a cocky smile.

“Do you really think I’m pretty?” he asked.

Shit, Blaine thought but didn’t let the other boy know what was happening in his head. “You wish,” he said with no hesitation.

“Well, just so you know, you have no chance,” he smiled and turned around.

Blaine wanted to give him a sarcastic comment but before he could come up with anything, Kurt was already gone. He knew he had two options. One, he could start being nice and hope that Kurt could forgive him if he tried hard enough to make up for what he had said and done. Two, he could continue being an asshole or totally ignore the boy. But he didn’t want to choose that option. He was tired of acting for so long now. But his father kept reminding him every time – safety first. Though Blaine wasn’t sure what he had to be afraid of. Dalton wasn’t like his old school after all.

He decided to talk to his dad later in the evening. He wanted his advice though he knew what it would be like – if you don’t want to hurt that boy, pretend he doesn’t exist. Maybe it would be wise.

However, the fate, in a form of David and Wes, decided differently.

<~*~>

Blaine was right about his father and his advice. He was sympathetic but that’s it. He didn’t say what Blaine wanted to hear – be yourself. Not for long, Blaine reminded himself when he saw Kurt entering the room with Jeff behind him.

“Everyone is here?” Wes asked counting people in the room. “Great. So we looked through the suggestions yesterday.”

“They were all crap,” Blaine giggled. He saw Kurt rolling his eyes; not that he was looking at him or anything.

“So we chose something we wanted,” David said neutrally as if it was a common thing. “The setlist is decided and won’t be changed.”

Blaine nodded. “We will go through the songs now and you will be able to sign up for auditions that will begin tomorrow,” he said.

Wes cleared his throat. “Not really. There will be no auditions. David and I chose perfect people for these songs so there is no need to waste anyone’s time.”

Blaine simply shrugged. He trusted the boys’ judgement so he was fine with that. Besides, it wasn’t smart to question his friends in front of everyone.

“As you already know, and if you don’t then listen carefully because I won’t say it again, there will be no changes done to the choice of songs or singers,” Blaine said giving the boys, who started to rustle, a stern look. By doing that he didn’t notice the looks on his friends’ faces. “Is that understood? Okay. David, enlighten us.”

David coughed lightly. “We found out that the New Directions are a huge threat this year. So we decided to be a bit… um… unpredictable this year. For the group number we decided to do a funny song about being the winners, with most of you singing a line or two. I will give you the lyrics with names written next to each line.”

“The solo…” Wes continued. “We thought about it for a long time. Finally we decided to sing ‘You’re the Voice’ by John Farnham. The solo part goes to… Nick.”

The boy gasped in surprise. He was not expecting any of that.

“And the duet,” Wes smirked. “will be sung by Kurt and Blaine.”

Preview:

“You are enjoying this way too much,” Jeff laughed silently.

“I figured if he actually likes me then I can get back at him for being an ass. He can make fun of me as long as I know that I can torture him my own way,” Kurt smirked and kissed Jeff’s cheek. “This is so much fun.”

Jeff pressed their foreheads together. “I told my girlfriend about this. She was laughing so hard I was afraid she lost her mind.”

“And I’m losing my mind,” Kurt said much louder when he saw Blaine passing by.

I'm liking the preview at the end! Though it makes me really want to know what's happening next. It might just be me, but I don't want Blaine to interrupt. Like, maybe he's in too much shock at what's going on to do anything about it.

You are one of the kind :D But I admit, it would be interesting :)
