Kurt was standing by his locker in a deserted hallway. He was always late for classes because hiding in the bathroom until the bell rang and being late for a class was better than getting a slushie facial and being late because it took a while to clean it off and change clothes. And he had to admit, he enjoyed being alone in the hallway. At least nobody shoved him into a locker or made him trip over their legs.
Once he took the last book he noticed that someone was approaching him. Having been deep in his thoughts he hadn’t noticed the jock, who was coming towards him. Kurt flinched but didn’t move. The boy was faster and stronger – running away would make it worse, Kurt knew that already.
“Hey, Hummel,” the boy said as he stood in front of Kurt.
“Not ‘Fagmel’, huh?” Kurt asked and closed his locker.
“I wanted to apologise,” the boy said, his head lowered in shame.
“What for, Kyle? Shoving me into lockers? Throwing me into dumpsters? Locking me into a janitor closet? Throwing slushies into my face? Calling me names? What exactly are you sorry for?”
“I’m sorry for hurting you, Kurt,” he whispered and Kurt could see tears streaming down Kyle’s face. He couldn’t believe that the jock was actually crying in front of him. “Just… sorry…” he repeated and went away as quickly as he could.
Kurt stood there confused until he remembered that there was a class he needed to attend.
<~*~>
Next day Kurt saw Kyle in the cafeteria. The boy looked at him for a second but quickly looked away. Kurt decided to sit as far as he could but the jocks noticed him. Once Kurt sat down, two of them came with the packs of juice and sat down at each side of Kurt. The boy just knew he shouldn’t have come to the cafeteria at all.
“Hey, Fagmel, are you thirsty?” one of them asked. Kurt didn’t say anything. “I asked you a question, lady”
“Rick, Ted, we will be late,” a familiar voice said and Kurt looked up to see Kyle standing in front of them. “And I could really use a drink,” he said and took the drinks from the boys who rolled their eyes and stood up.
“See you next time, Fagmel,” Ted growled and the three of them left shocked Kurt by himself.
<~*~>
“What was all that about?” Kurt when he approached Kyle in the parking lot after school. It took a while to gather the courage to talk to him face to face without witnesses.
“I liked your shirt, I didn’t want them to ruin it,” he said calmly. “Maybe… would you like to go… have coffee or something?”
Kurt was taken aback. “What?”
“I mean… If you want and… uh… if you don’t have plans with… like… your boyfriend or something,” Kyle struggled through words.
“I don’t have a boyfriend. But what do you want to talk about?” he didn’t understand anything.
Kyle didn’t seem to find the right words. “Stuff like… I don’t know. Anything. Please?”
Kurt was still confused but curiosity took over and he agreed. Kurt followed Kyle to the ‘Lima Bean’ and they both went inside to order. Once they had their drinks and sat down Kyle started playing with the cap.
“If you want to talk, you will need to use words,” Kurt joked when Kyle stayed silent for a minute.
“How… how did you know… that you… were… you know what?” he asked never looking at Kurt.
“Gay?”
“Yes, that…”
“That’s pretty simple, I guess. You like girls – you are straight, you like boys – you are gay, you like both – you are bisexual. Why are we having this conversation?” he asked, one brow raised.
“Because… I… like you,” he finished shyly.
Kurt had some coffee in his mouth but not for long – he started coughing and it all went on the table. “I’m sorry, what?” He knew he heard it correctly but he had to be sure.
Kyle closed his eyes for a few seconds and opened them to look straight at Kurt. “It’s really confusing for me… I just can’t stop thinking about you and how good you look in those tight jeans… and… You are amazing, Kurt,” he smiled warily.
Kurt felt butterflies in his stomach. Kyle looked sincere – he was a closeted jock and he liked him. He smiled slightly.
“Tell me about yourself.”
<~*~>
“I love kissing you,” Kyle said after over a month of them being together. “And I love being with you.”
“I’m so happy to be with you too,” Kurt smiled and kissed him again.
Kyle smiled. “Come with me to the auditorium. People will soon come to this classroom and the auditorium will be empty.”
“Okay,” Kurt said and he followed the boy.
They went in and sat down in the middle of the front row. “There is something I want to do,” Kyle said in between kisses.
“And what is that?” Kurt asked and pressed their foreheads together.
“I want to sing for you,” he smiled. “I’m not a good singer but you should know it comes from my heart.”
Kurt jumped in his seat excitedly. He couldn’t believe that he would be serenaded by his boyfriend, especially in the school where anyone could come and see them. Meanwhile Kyle went to the stage and put a CD with karaoke recording of the song he wanted to sing for Kurt.
“Listen very carefully, Kurt. I mean every word of it,” Kyle smiled and music took over.
There's nothing I could say to you,
Nothing I could ever do to make you see
What you mean to me.
All the pain, the tears I cried,
Still you never said goodbye and now I know
How far you'd go.
Kyle was right – he wasn‘t a good singer. But at that moment it didn‘t matter. The lyrics were the most important thing.
I will be all that you want and get myself together
'Cause you keep me from falling apart.
All my life, I'll be with you forever
To get you through the day and make everything okay.
Now Kurt had tears in his eyes. The song was the definition of perfect.
I thought that I had everything,
I didn't know what life could bring.
But now I see, honestly –
You're the one thing I got right,
The only one I let inside,
Now I can breathe 'cause you're here with me.
Without you I can't breathe,
I'm not gonna ever, ever let you leave.
You're all I got, you're all I want, oh…
'Cause without you I don't know what I'd do,
I can never, ever live a day without you.
Here with me, do you see you're all I need?
And I will be, all that you want and get myself together,
'Cause you keep me from falling apart.
And all my life, I'll be with you forever
To get you through the day and make everything okay.
Kyle went into the last chorus and finished the song. Kurt ran to him clapping his hands, tears running down his cheeks.
“It was perfect, you are perfect,” he smiled and kissed the boy. “I love you.”
“Woohoo!” two voices came from behind the curtains.
“Do you have it taped?” Kyle asked when Ted and Rick joined them on the stage, Ted holding a camera.
“Yeah. It is going to be epic. I’m sure Jacob Ben Israel will put it on his blog today and it will spread very quickly,” Rick told him.
“What is he talking about, Kyle?” Kurt asked shaking a little. He had a feeling what was happening but he didn’t want to believe it.
“It means that I just won one hundred bucks. But satisfaction is worth way more,” he laughed and high fived his friends. “Now I need to go back home and take a long shower to wash all the Fagmel’s dirt from myself.”
Kurt stood there crying, shaking his head a bit in disbelief.
“Say again how much you love him, Fagmel, please? We all want to hear it again. Oh wait, we will because we can watch the video again and again, and once more…” Ted mocked him and they finally left laughing. Kurt’s knees gave up and he fell on his butt sobbing.
