Chapter 10

Blaine woke up exactly two hours after his head touched the pillow. His biological clock was very precise and it didn’t allow him to take a nap for longer than two hours. For the boy it was long enough to get strength back and be lively.

Once he opened his eyes the first thought was Kurt. The boy must have sent him some texts. Without even thinking he reached for the phone and struggled a bit until he found it on the ground without any idea how it got there. Blaine checked it and found a few new messages.

Kurt: 20 texts? I’m pretty sure I can just send 20 facts in fewer messages if you don’t mind. Then it will be easier for you to read.

Kurt: 1. I have never had a pet. 2. Christmas is my favourite holiday. 3. I love Broadway. 4. I’m a countertenor.

Kurt: 5. Sometimes I used to work in my dad’s garage. 6. I have never had a girlfriend. 7. My favourite piece of clothing is scarves.

Mike: 7pm., Blaine’s place.

Kurt: 8. I love plush toys. 9. I used to spend a lot of time on tumblr (guilty pleasure). 10. I have a weakness for ‘Snickers’. 11. I stopped driving a car after I ran over a cat. 12. I always wanted to go to Paris. 13. I used to watch football with my dad so that I could spend more time with him.

Kurt: 14. I bruise easily. 15. My mom died when I was eight. 16. I can play piano. 17. Lisa is my favourite Simpson. 18. My favourite ice cream flavour is pineapple. 19. I can juggle. 20. I thought it would be easier to think of 20 things.

Sugar: Uuu, party?

Kurt: Oh, wait, the 20th wasn’t exactly a fact. Let’s say… 20. New York has always been the city of my dreams. Here you go. Now you know the real Kurt with his flows and weaknesses.

<~*~>

Feeling much better and calmer after the conversation with his supervisor, Kurt took a magazine and read it for a while. Suddenly he got an idea and left the room with a plan. He needed to talk to someone. To someone who knew everyone. To someone who couldn’t shut up. To someone who was Jeff. So he texted the boy and arranged a meeting in the corridor of the fifth floor next to a painting of three horses.

Kurt laughed at the precision of Jeff but didn’t question him. He simply walked around looking for the right place. Meanwhile he felt his phone vibrating and heard a silent beep. The boy checked his phone to find out that Blaine had woken up.

Blaine: Girls must be crazy if they don’t chase after you.

Kurt couldn’t help but laugh. Well, he wasn’t lying to Blaine. He really never had a girlfriend and he had never been interested in getting one. Given his reputation at school it would have been impossible, besides, as a gay guy he never even thought about it. A boyfriend, yes. A girlfriend, never.

Kurt: I told you 20 facts and you choose to comment on the most painful one?

Kurt sent a text and a smile dropped a little. It really was painful. Not the fact of not having had a girlfriend but being gay. It wasn’t easy. Maybe, if he was straight, life at school would have been easier.

The boy put his phone back into a pocket and continued looking for the painting. It took three more minutes to find the place. And not because of the painting but because Jeff was already there.

“Hey, Kurt. You’re late. But it’s okay. I came a bit late as well so no harm done. Not that you could do any harm. I mean you’re a sweet guy. I’m pretty sure you couldn’t hurt me. Unless you could shove me unintentionally or something. But I know you would never do that on purpose. So what is the purpose of this sudden urge to talk to me?”

“Hello to you too, Jeff,” Kurt smiled. In a very short time he grew to like Jeff a lot. Not as a guy but as a friend. Jeff was not his type anyway. “You’re probably busy like everyone else here so I will go straight to the point. What can you say about someone called Blaine?”

“There are many boys named Blaine in the world. You will have to be more precise, Kurtie.”

“He is my supervisor,” Kurt said hoping that it would help. He didn’t know anything else about the boy. Not even which squad he was in.

“Oh, that Blaine! Have you met him already?” Jeff asked knowing the answer already.

“No, I’m probably not meeting him until tomorrow. Today we were supposed to meet but he couldn’t and gave me a day off. So who is this mysterious Blaine?”

Jeff thought for a moment, trying to figure out how much he could tell.

“Well, he likes basketball…”

“Seriously, Jeff?” Kurt asked impatiently.

“Just joking, Kurt, don’t be so mean to me,” they both laughed. “Okay, let me think. Don’t judge him from what I’m going to say but he is in the Purple Squad. Stop it right here – not every ‘purple’ is a jackass. There are a few normal guys and girls. Just give him a chance.”

“Fine. It just seems that those ‘purples’ are everywhere. First, those two don’t leave me alone, then there was that guy from the cafeteria earlier today; I don’t’ know if you saw what happened. And now my supervisor is one of them.”

“Who knows, maybe you will end up being one of them?”

“I don’t think so. They are way too good,” Kurt smiled. He would never want to be a part of that group of fake people no matter how good they were.

“So Blaine… He has been here for a while. I mean, in the C.A.T., not the base. Now he is usually somewhere else working. No wonder he chose to supervise; he must be quite tired after a few hectic years. I don’t want to go deeply in his personality but he is a good guy. And he is the best agent here. I can say you’re lucky to have him as your supervisor. Though you probably won’t believe me. And maybe you should ask someone else because I’m a bit biased given that he is one of my best friends. But I can tell you one exciting thing about him! He is g–”

At that moment Kurt’s phone rang.

“Sorry, Jeff, I have to take it,” Kurt said and took his phone out. It was Sebastian. “Hello?.. I’m with Jeff… Okay, I’ll be in a minute.”

He hung up and looked up at his friend. “Sorry, Jeff, Sebastian called. He says it’s important and he didn’t want to talk about it on phone. Thanks for the information no matter how useless you were,” he laughed and turned around. “See you around.”

“Bye bye,” Jeff said.

These two are impossible, he thought and went to see Sarah.

<~*~>

“Painful,” Blaine whispered to himself and put the phone down on the bed. He closed his eyes and put hands over them. He didn’t want to admit to Jeff but deep inside he had a hope that Kurt might be gay. Now the boy told him it was painful that he had never had a girlfriend. It confirmed that Kurt was straight. Blaine sighed and got up. Mike and Sugar would be coming in a few hours so he wanted to get some snacks and drinks from Jeff for their evening. He also had an idea how to make Kurt smile at least for a minute or two. It was the least he could do after scaring the boy during lunch.

<~*~>

Kurt knocked on the doors and entered the room when Sebastian shouted ‘come in’. Both boys agreed to do that just in case; you can never know what you may walk in on.

“Hey, so what’s happening?” Kurt asked the boy who was sitting on his bed texting someone.

They were all happy to find out that they would be given phones and they wouldn’t need to worry about bills. Of course, everyone took that as an encouragement to communicate through texts and calls. Kurt liked that, not only because he could text or call his parents and Finn for free, but it also meant that he could finally get to know Tina.

“I need to ask for a favour. If you help me, I’ll be in your debt.”

“You have my interest,” Kurt chuckled and sat down on his own bed, wondering why Blaine hadn’t replied yet.

“I need the room for myself tonight,” Sebastian said smirking. “If you don’t mind of course. You could spend the night somewhere else maybe.”

“Like where?”

“I don’t know but please, Kurt, that would mean a lot to me…”

Kurt frowned. He wanted to help Sebastian out but at the same time the boy couldn’t think of a place to spend night at. Maybe he would go to the library; it was open at night as well. He could skype with his family because it would be late evening in Lima and his father with Carole would be at home. Later he could read a book and maybe sleep a bit on one of the couches.

“Fine. But you owe me.”

“Thanks, Kurt! You’re awesome!”

“I know,” he laughed and turned his head to look through the window when something caught his eye. “What’s that?”

“This box? I don’t know. I found it by the doors. It has your name on it so I didn’t check what’s inside.”

Kurt looked at him and then back at the box curiously. It was a simple white handmade box someone made of thick paper. Kurt took it and opened. There was a piece of paper in it with a few words: ‘Kurt, Enjoy every bite, Blaine’. Kurt smiled and moved the paper. Sebastian watched the boy’s smile grow wider.

“What’s inside?” he asked when Kurt didn’t show any sign of telling himself.

“A bar of ‘Snickers’ from my supervisor.”

“Cool. Mine only gave me some bruises,” Sebastian laughed.

“Oh, I totally forgot because I didn’t have a meeting with my supervisor. How did it go for you?” Kurt asked mentally slapping himself for forgetting that his friends had an exciting day.

“I haven’t spoken to anyone so I don’t know if it was the same for everyone but my supervisor Nick wanted to test my strength. More like, to use me as a boxing bag, to be honest.”

“Which squad is he from?”

“Green. You, Tina, and Wes have ‘purples’, Santana and I are stuck with ‘greens’. After the supervisors were announced I heard a few people talking how strange it was that those ‘purples’ had decided to supervise. Usually nobody from that squad wants, as they call it, to babysit. But as far as I heard those three are like friends so maybe they just wanted to spend more time together or whatever.”

“I see…” he said and there was a minute of silence. Kurt argued with himself whether he should offer Sebastian a piece of the candy bar or not. Finally he decided that it would be nice of him to share with a roommate. “Do you want some ‘Snickers’?”

“No, thanks, man. I don’t like them.”

“That’s awesome; I didn’t want to share anyway,” Kurt said and they both laughed. “Anyway, when do you want me to disappear?”

“After dinner, maybe?”

Kurt nodded. It was almost an hour until dinner and he decided to go for a walk. He used to do it if they had some leisure time because he wanted to know the building and be able to go to places he needed without a map of the building or getting lost.

The boy took the candy bar and left. He should have had a nap before; it would be easier to spend a more or less sleepless night if he didn’t want to sleep. Now it was too late. So he stepped into the elevator and pressed the button of the ground floor. The doors closed and he opened the package of ‘Snickers’. One bite and he moaned silently. The elevator started to move down but stopped after only one floor. The doors opened and a curly haired boy in purple t-shirt stepped inside. Kurt rolled his eyes and took another bite; now his mood would be ruined but at least he had some sugar to make things better.

“Hi, Kurt Hummel,” the boy smiled

“Don’t call me that,” Kurt hissed. Yes, his mood was ruined.

“Don’t you like your name? By the way, where did you get that?” he asked motioning to the candy bar. “As far as I know there are no candies in the cafeteria. And I would know if there were. Though, if there were, then there would be none after me. Does that make sense? I mean, I would eat all of them.”

“You’re rambling,” was all Kurt said still eating but a tiny smile was visible.

“I know. I tend to do that sometimes. But at least I’m not as bad as that Jeff kid. I think he simply can’t think of one thing at a time,” Blaine laughed.

“Oh, so just because you’re so awesome, you think you can make fun of others?” Kurt snapped feeling offended by the boy’s words about his friend. He pressed the button of the next floor so that he could leave earlier. Apparently the boy was also going to the ground floor because he hadn’t pressed any button after getting in.

“You think I’m awesome?” the boy laughed.

Fortunately, the elevator stopped and Kurt left without another word. However, Blaine stepped out as well. Feeling angrier Kurt ignored the boy who was next to him.

“Anyway, I wanted to–” the boy said and his phone rang. Kurt used the moment while the other boy was taking his phone out and stepped into the elevator that was about to close. When Blaine turned around it was too late – the doors closed.

In the elevator Kurt pressed the ground floor button again and finished the candy bar. He felt slightly better but still frustrated. He put the package in a pocket and took the phone out just to find a text from Blaine; he hadn’t even heard it.

Blaine: Don’t worry, there are a lot of hot girls here.

Kurt: I will take a look around then. Anyway, I have a question. Let’s say somebody’s roommate wants to be alone at night. And then that somebody’s roommate’s roommate has to find a place to stay and he is thinking of the library. Do you know if people are allowed to sleep there on a couch?

He sent the text feeling a bit pathetic. Being thrown out of his own room even with consent wasn’t a pleasant situation. But he wanted to be sure he could stay in the library and his supervisor should know if it was allowed. After all, his job was to help and advise Kurt.

Blaine: Does somebody’s roommate’s roommate want to spend a nigh in the library? If not, I know a nice place…

Kurt: And what’s that?

Blaine: Well, I have a very comfortable couch in the sitting room. You’re very welcome to use it.

Kurt: Me? I thought we were talking about somebody’s roommate’s roommate?

Blaine: Oh, sorry, I assumed it was you. But your friend is also welcome to stay a night.

Kurt: Blaine, I was joking, it’s me who has no place to stay… Are you sure it’s okay?

Blaine: Fine with me. Even perfect, we could get to know each other better. I will just tell my friends that the plans have changed.

Kurt: No, no, no. If you have plans don’t change anything.

Blaine: No. no. no. I didn’t fulfil my duty as a supervisor today so this is the least I can do. And I want to meet you.

Kurt: You gave me a half day off, so let’s call it even. You don’t have to do anything.

Kurt: By the way, thanks for the ‘Snickers’, it really made my day.

Blaine: That was my intention. So how about you come to my room after dinner? Just don’t eat too much – I have some awesome snacks (including one or two ‘Snickers’)

Kurt: How could I say ‘no’ to that?

<~*~>

Blaine texted the number of his room and some directions because it was on the floor which Kurt still didn’t know well. So after the dinner which went in a calm way, the ‘whites’ sharing the stories of their day, Kurt found himself standing with his overnight bag in front of the doors. There was a doorbell that none of the rooms he had seen had. He pressed the button and waited for a few seconds. The doors opened.

“Hi, Kurt, it’s awesome you came,” the dark haired boy smiled brightly at him.

“You?” Kurt asked in shock.
