Some people enjoy the April Fools’ Day because they can lie as much as they want and pull pranks. Others hate this day because of the same reason. But as long as pranks don’t get out of hand, most people have fun.
Except Kurt. The boy happened to be born on the first of April. During his childhood the main prank, pulled on him used to be not coming to his birthday party. He used to sit alone and wait until his parents joined him to eat the cake, which Kurt could hardly even swallow because of the lump in his throat. After a few years he convinced his parents that there was no use to invite anyone.
That’s how Kurt lost the joy of celebrating his own birthdays. But this year he had a feeling it would be special. He had an amazing boyfriend, a few good friends, his brother was finally with him on his special day. Kurt was sure it would be the best birthday he had ever had.
Waking up next to my boyfriend is a good start, Kurt thought once he was woken up by a shower of kisses. He smiled, still half asleep, and opened his eyes. But it wasn’t Blaine.
“Jeff?! Oh my god, get off me!” he yelled, kicking everywhere but just got tangled in the sheets.
“I can’t get off you but I can get you off!” Jeff smirked and started tickling the boy.
“Stop! What the hell are you doing here?” Kurt asked after Jeff stopped and hugged him tightly.
“April fools! I’m your Blaine for today.”
“Meaning?”
Jeff chuckled. “Meaning that I get to kiss you, to touch you, to fuck– Ouch! What was that for?” Jeff frowned having been hit with a pillow.
“Get. Out. Of. My. Bed!” Kurt shouted.
Jeff jumped out of the bed and ran to the corridor. “A madman in the house!” he shouted like crazy.
Kurt growled and lay back on the bed. It was not the way he expected the day to begin.
<~*~>
Before leaving for breakfast Kurt sent a text to Blaine to explain where he had gone. The boy started to feel excitement because in his mind his boyfriend had been preparing something either romantic or exciting for him. He couldn’t think of any other reason why he wasn’t in their bed in the morning.
Kurt was surprised to find their usual table in the cafeteria empty. A smirk crossed his face at a thought that maybe Blaine wasn’t the only one planning something. Well, he had amazing friends after all.
Kurt started with lemon juice and when he was halfway through, a group of people came into the room chatting animatedly. Kurt smiled and waved at them. They greeted him from far and went to grab some food.
“Good morning, beautiful,” Blaine said kissing him on a cheek after sitting down next to Kurt.
“Yeah, beautiful, good morning,” Noah giggled. “How was the wake up kiss?”
“Oh, I left early this morning and didn’t want to wake him up,” Blaine said, looking apologetically, “so there was no wake up kiss…”
Jeff placed his tray defensively. “Actually there was… Please, don’t kill me!” he added quickly.
“What did you do?” Blaine asked, his voice rising. He wasn’t looking at Jeff.
Kurt looked at him in horror. “I didn’t do anything! Jeff crawled into our bed and–” he started but Blaine began laughing. “I hate you.”
Blaine tried to kiss him but Kurt didn’t let him. “Come on, it was funny,” Blaine continued laughing, everyone else joining in.
“You should have seen your face, Kurt,” Santana cut in.
“You could find your photo at the definition of ‘priceless’,” Tina agreed.
Finn nodded happily but frowned a little not long after. “I have a feeling that today is a
special day... What day is it, honey?”
“It's the first of April of course,” Rachel said giving him a meaningful look.
Kurt looked at him expectantly but his smile faltered after Finn’s answer. “Oh, yes! How could have I forgotten? It's the April Fools' Day!”
“The best day of the year,” Noah exclaimed.
Kurt sighed and continued drinking the juice.
<~*~>
“Happy,” Kurt looked excitedly at Mike, who was waiting for Tina after the boxing lesson, “April Fools’ Day. Having fun today?”
Kurt nodded with a fake smile on his face. “Loads. How is your day?”
“Pretty good. Actually, quite busy. Tina and I have a lot of stuff to do. Oh, here she is,” he smiled affectionately at his girlfriend. “I’ll see you later, Kurt.”
“Bye,” Kurt said and watched them kissing before they walked away.
It was unfair that his only kisses had been Jeff’s and one chaste kiss on a cheek from Blaine, while other couples continued showing off.
“Hey, Kurt,” he heard Blaine’s voice and turned around. He was holding a huge bouquet of red roses.
“Hi,” he whispered.
Blaine grinned. “How do you like the flowers?”
“They are lovely…”
“Whew, it’s great to hear,” Blaine said relieved. “I’m sure Sugar is going to like them as well.”
“Sugar?”
The boy nodded. “We are trying to convince her that today is her name day. I came here just to tell you that I have to cancel our lesson. I have to go see Sugar and then Sarah, then I need to–”
“Just go,” Kurt rolled his eyes, trying not to sound too impatient, “You don’t need to tell me everything.”
“I love you,” Blaine said quickly and walked away.
Kurt watched him leave.
<~*~>
Blaine: Oh shit, I need a favour! Pretty please!
Kurt: What is it?
Blaine: I left my keys in the auditorium III. I don’t have time to go there…
Kurt: Is this some prank? I’m not falling for it.
Blaine: I swear, it’s not a prank!
Kurt: Fine.
Kurt was slightly angry and disappointed. It was almost eight in the evening and he got only a call from his parents. Everyone else totally forgot his birthday. Kurt didn’t even go to dinner so that his friends wouldn’t see his face; he was sure they would be able to read him pretty easily.
Blaine: You are the best! Thanks!
Of course I am, Kurt thought on the way to the auditorium. He was hoping he could find the keys quickly.
The auditorium was dim and Kurt cursed himself for not knowing where to turn on more lights. Thinking that Blaine had most likely been somewhere by the stage, he went down the stairs when suddenly letters appeared on the closed curtains.
Take a seat, Kurt
Kurt didn’t move, just stared at the words.
Pretty please
He shook his head and went a few rows down so that he was in the middle. Slowly he sat down and the words changed again.
Happy birthday, Love! Blaine
Happy birthday, Brother! Finn
Happy birthday, Dude! Noah
Happy birthday, Today’s Boyfriend! Jeff
Happy birthday, Trevor! Rachel
Happy birthday, Texting Buddy! Tina
Happy birthday, Cuttie! Sugar
Happy birthday, Smartass! Mike
Happy birthday, Badass! Santana
Happy birthday, Ass! Jeff again
Happy birthday, FRIEND! Everyone
The words disappeared and the curtains slowly opened. The music started playing and Kurt gasped silently.
Good news!
She's dead!
The Witch of the West is dead!
The wickedest witch there ever was
The enemy of all of us here in Oz
Is Dead!
Good news!
Good news!
<~*~>
By the end of his birthday gift Kurt‘s eyes were red and puffy from crying. The whole time he couldn’t believe what was happening.
“Happy birthday!” his friends shouted from the stage and Kurt gave them a standing ovation.
Blaine was the first to jump from the stage and run towards Kurt, who was walking towards him.
“Happy birthday,” he pulled Kurt into a bone crushing hug. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” Kurt whispered. He pulled away a little just so he could face everyone else, who were coming closer. “Gosh, I love you all. I can’t believe that you went through all this trouble just for me…”
“The rehearsals were the pain in the ass but it was totally worth it,” Noah said with pride obvious on his face.
Kurt smiled at him, trying to keep himself together. “I love you but I still hate you for today,” he uttered and Blaine tightened the grip.
“Just like Noah said – totally worth it,” Finn grinned at him, his one arm wrapped around Rachel’s waist.
“By the way, blame it all on your boy toy. It was his idea. From the musical to all the little lies,” Sugar quickly let him know.
“I prefer ‘surprise initiators’,” Blaine defended himself.
Kurt quirked one eyebrow. “What does that even mean?”
“It means that I didn’t want to lie to you so I covered it by calling it differently?” the boy shrugged.
“Okay, lover boys, we will leave you two alone. Don’t do anything nasty,” Jeff patted Blaine’s shoulder and one by one they left, Kurt repeating ‘thank you’ over and over again.
“Best birthday ever,” Kurt said once they were left alone and finally kissed Blaine passionately. “Thank you.”
“You are worth so much more, love,” he said and kissed him again.
After a few moments Kurt pulled away. “You know, this make-up suits you,” he said bashfully.
“I was thinking of cleaning it off but maybe… we could put it in a good use?” Blaine said and attacked his neck.
“You are reading my mind.”
