Kurt had never enjoyed flying. In fact he resented it. Kurt found every aspect of being on a plane horrific, from the cramped seating and having minimal leg room for hours (which never bothered Blaine), to screeching babies and passengers who had not yet discovered deodorant. Every time Kurt and Blaine had to fly somewhere, normally to and from Ohio, Blaine would make distracting Kurt his top priority, and he was always very successful in doing this. Kurt smirked to himself as he thought about that amazing flight which he and Blaine spent most of their time pressed together in the incredibly small toilet, trying to muffle their moans and laughter but failing. That had definitely been Blaine’s best attempt to make Kurt forget that they were about 36,000 feet about the ground, however it did put him on cloud nine.
A piercing scream from the baby in the row behind him snapped Kurt back to his harsh reality. The reality where Blaine wasn't beside him holding his hand and whispering sweet nothings in his ear to keep him calm. Kurt sighed and began to analyze what he planned to say to Blaine when he saw him, but he knew that it was certain he would freeze and not be able to speak while Blaine would yell how much he hated him and that he never wants to see him again. This terrified Kurt but he knew this would be the reality. He desperately hoped that the instant their eyes met they would run into each others arms while ‘Come What May’ played in the background and they would live happily ever after. Not wanting to get his hopes up, because he knew he deserved Blaine to push him away not embrace him, Kurt locked this dream away in the back of his head.
An hour later, Kurt was back on the ground and leaving the airport. His first stop would be his home, it was a sunday so his dad would most likely be at home watching the game. Kurt hated himself for pushing away his dad. He knew how deeply his dad worried for him, which had escalated greatly after his attack in New York a few months ago. Kurt hoped his dad would forgive him and understand why he pushed everyone away, even though he didn't fully understand himself. Kurt generously payed the taxi driver and stood at the bottom of the drive to his home, trying to pull himself together before approaching the house.
Ignoring the ‘what if’s’ running around in his head Kurt raised his hand to knock on the door, but before he could the door swung open and a frantic Burt stood in the doorway, pulling on his coat. When he saw Kurt standing there he froze.
“Kurt… What… Your’e here! Are you okay? Are you hurt? What happened?” Burt stammered as tears threatened to run down his face, then pulled his son into one of his famous ‘bear hugs’, which is what Blaine called them whenever he received one.
“I’m so, so sorry Dad,” was all Kurt could say through his sobs.
“It’s okay Kurt, we can talk all about it later but there is something I really important I need to tell you.” Burt began. “It’s Blaine, Kurt. There has been an accident and he’s in the hospital. His parents just called me. I’m was just leaving for the hospital, you need to come with me Kurt. There’s some things I have to tell you on the way.”
In that moment Kurt felt his world shatter around him. Burt continued to talk but Kurt couldn't quite understand what he was saying. His Blaine was hurt. All the scenarios Kurt had imagined in his head, this was not one. This was a million times worse than anything Kurt could have imagined. The love of his life was in hospital, he had no idea what condition Blaine was in or if he was going to be okay. Kurt didn't want to begin to think what the worse case scenario could be, but the idea of his last moment with Blaine being leaving him made Kurt feel sick.
All Kurt could do why his dad filled him in on what had been happening the last month was cry. He had never hated himself more than he did right now. Kurt knew that he had caused Blaine so much suffering and resulted in him being injured. Kurt was the whole reason Blaine was at Dalton when the fire happened. He couldn't stop himself from thinking, ‘If only I had called, or texted, or come back, or never had made him leave in the first place, he would be okay. He would be with me.’ Of course this just made everything worse, but until he and Burt were inside the hospital, waiting outside Blaine’s room, Kurt couldn't think anything else. The Anderson’s we’re too distraught to fully acknowledge Kurt when they first arrived, pulling Burt aside to explain in detail Blaine’s condition. Kurt just stood outside the room, looking at the door, self loathing. When Mrs Anderson realized that it was Kurt standing there, she pulled him into her arms, sobbing while saying how happy she was that he was here. Mr Anderson did the same, while Kurt said he was sorry over and over again. The four of them huddled together, anticipating what was going to happen to Blaine, unable to do anything but worry.
Weeks passed and Blaine was still unconscious. Burt, The Anderson’s and Kurt rarely left the hospital. At first Kurt was unable to go into the room Blaine was in, not able to cope with seeing Blaine hurt, but as time passed Kurt found comfort sitting at his bedside.
One morning, Kurt had gone to the Lima Bean to get coffee for everyone, which had become his usual routine. Burt and the Anderson’s were at the hospital discussing what would happen when Blaine will wake up and find out that Kurt is there.
“I’m sure he will be happy Burt, but he's probably going to need time to adjust. Blaine has been without Kurt for so long and has suffered because of this. I’m not saying this is Kurt’s fault but part of me fears that Blaine could think it is, even though he loves Kurt.” Mr Anderson told Burt, weary on how his son will cope.
“I know, I know…but it just kills me seeing them in this situation. Kurt is torn up thinking that Blaine hates him and will want nothing to do with him when he wakes up.” Burt couldn't bring himself to say ‘if he wakes up’. “ and I know that I can’t reassure him that it’s not true and that everything will be fine because we don’t know that.” Burt continued, frustration clear in his voice.
Before anyone else could speak, they were interrupted by a small, pained voice from the bed beside them.
“Who’s…Who’s Kurt?”
I'm so sorry for the late update, the next chapter will be up in a couple of days:)
