Kurt had been quite successful the past year. He'd gotten to where he had been before he quit his job to be a stay at home parent. He'd also written a new novel and had the sequel to his first one complete and ready to go. Everything had been submitted and now he was just waiting for the okay. Life was good.
That morning he made Abigail breakfast and got her ready for the day. It was typical Friday, he was home from work and was getting ready to face the day. Today was one of those days though. Abigail was packing her toys into the little backpack he gave her. Andrew was on his way over to pick her up for the weekend. What he didn't expect was the other person with him. Kurt opened the front door seeing some man standing next to Andrew. He walked outside onto the porch while Andrew stayed at the bottom of the steps that led up to the front door.
“Hi, Kurt,” Andrew said. Kurt groaned at how happy he was being able to show off the man next to him. Kurt couldn't help but feel bitter towards the new man.
“Hi Dad. Hi Marcus!” Abigail said running out of the front door next to Kurt. Well, he now knew the guys name. He crouched down and Abigail threw her bag on the ground. Her little arms wrapped around his neck and a wet kiss was placed to his cheek. Kurt smiled and kissed her head as he hugged her back.
“Bye, Princess. Be good. Have Dad call me if you need anything,” Kurt said as she pulled away. She nodded and picked up her bag and ran out. Kurt stood up and glared at Andrew. Marcus turned and followed her to the car.
“He's great with her. She adores him to.”
“Get lost. Oh, can you please bring her home early on Sunday. Rachel invited us to dinner,” Kurt said holding back the retort he had in store.
“I'll bring her back when my time is up with her.”
“All I ask is you bring her back an hour early. If I need to call my lawyer and get you to comply that way then I will,” Kurt replied.
“If I need to get my lawyer to tell you that she is with me until my scheduled time then I will. And, while I'm at it I'll come after you for more visiting time or custody. It seems like I have more of a stable life compared to you.”
“I am doing everything possible to keep her home life stable. You don't need to worry about that,” Kurt said and walked into his house and slammed the door. He leaned back against it and slid down to the floor. He ran a hand through his hair and wiped at his eyes. Eventually, he moved to the couch and laid down on it. He hugged a pillow close until a knock sounded on his door. He rolled his eyes and got up fixing his appearance quickly. He opened the door revealing Rachel standing there. She looked upset and uncertain. She had a red sun dress and had her hair pulled up into a tight ponytail.
“Can I come in?” she asked. Kurt nodded and opened the door for her. She came in and he closed the front door. Nobody in their little neighborhood needed to see him like this. When he turned around Rachel threw her arms around him and held him close.
“I saw him with another guy and figured it must be...somebody close,” Rachel said. Kurt cried into her shoulder feeling pathetic. Why was this life!? This was not supposed to be how things went!
“It is...apparently she loves him and he's really good with her. Rachel...what am I going to do?”
“Not let him get to you. You're so much better than that. So, maybe he has somebody but he screwed so many people before him so it's nothing good. I'm sure the other guy doesn't know the real story.”
“Great...Andrew is more than likely telling this guy something else putting the whole divorce on me.”
“Look, you can do so much better than Andrew. There are tons of better guys out there.”
“I know...I hope I meet somebody soon...I want to date again but there aren't many available bachelor's out there,” Kurt said sighing. Rachel hugged him and stood up.
“Still joining us tonight for dinner and drinks?”
“Of course. I live for these nights,” Kurt said. She left him after that and he sat back against the couch. After a while he got up and got ready for dinner. He locked up and walked over to Mercedes house and met the girls outside.
Quinn Puckerman was dressed in slacks and a button up shirt. She looked tired but Kurt realized it was an everyday thing. She had three kids and had recently rekindled a relationship with Beth. Noah was usually working and providing for his family. Surprisingly, he was working with a company and had become business partners just a year ago. Quinn had gone to Yale for law and had been a promising lawyer and then she got pregnant with her kid. She decided to be a stay at home mom but he could she missed her old life.
Next to her stood Santana. She had married Brittany just a few years ago and both were successful. Santana had been a super model for years and took a break to be with her wife. Brittany modeled with her and they were deemed the super couple. They had no wish to start a family just yet and were content where they were. They moved back here for New York City like Kurt and Rachel had.
Rachel joined them as Kurt walked over to the group. She had a good life. The perfect family. She played the perfect housewife and took care of her family. Finn was done with the army and had taken over the garage Kurt's father had owned. Kurt didn't want to get involved with it so he gave his share to Finn. Burt and Carole lived in D.C. While they all lived in Ohio spending their days together. Rachel had two kids, twins actually. They were only two years older than Abigail.
They all hugged and walked up to Mercedes front door. They knocked and she opened it up and let them in. They all hugged her and Kurt knew instantly something was off. When they sat down to dinner Mercedes confirmed his suspicions. She had been single for a while, Sam and her had broken up and he moved to LA. They never saw it coming but she had.
Mercedes had gone to college to teach music. She was happy and had been a music teacher for a while. Sam had left her for LA and a better job. She said she was okay but Kurt knew she hurt. She had wanted to settle down with Sam but a job was a job and he needed it. He didn't see them getting together again but who knew what could happen in this life. Look what happened to his life!
“So, why is this dinner so important?” Rachel asked.
“Because...guys...this is the last dinner we'll have here together. I'm moving out to LA to be with Sam.”
“No! You are not allowed. He left you, he needs to crawl back,” Quinn said.
“You don't get it...he got me my big break. The company he works for wants me to join their label!” Mercedes replied. They all squealed and congratulated her. Kurt sat in silence waiting for it to end.
“Congratulations, Mercedes. I'm happy for you. Good luck and don't forget us little people,” Kurt said.
“For Mercedes! Cheers!” Santana said. They all clinked their glasses together and took a drink. That meant he was the only one without that other person in their lives.
“So, is the house up for sale?” Rachel asked.
“Yes, it is. There's an offer for it already. I'm moving out next weekend and flying out to Cali,” Mercedes replied sadly.
“That sucks but it's good in the long run. You're going to be so much happier and better off now,” Quinn said. Kurt would miss her dearly but she was getting her big break. Dinner went by a little quieter. After they talked some more they all left to go home. Kurt was heading back to an empty house. These weekends he hated more than anybody knew.
