The next morning Blaine ran to get ready. He knew it was stupid but he wanted to see Kurt. He needed to see Kurt. For the first night in a long time he had a peaceful sleep. He left his hair un-gelled and ran out into the city street.
He got to the studio in about half an hour and walked in smiling at the receptionist. He walked right back to see Kurt talking with the guy from the photo. He looked tense and angry and so did the other guy.
“Another day where you need to skip out on lunch?”
“Look, we took on another person and I need to start working with him. Rachel has Quinn so I took him. So, our lunch dates need to be shorter or non-existent when he's here,” Kurt said.
“Whatever. I'll see you later,” the man said and pushed past Blaine. He watched the man walk away and turned back to Kurt.
“Sorry about him. He's stressed out and I canceled our lunch date today. I spoil him too much,” Kurt said smiling. Blaine forced a smile and looked down at the ground.
“Ready? I have an idea for Holding On I want to share with you,” Kurt said. Blaine nodded and was led back into a little studio. Blaine looked at the equipment in the room and into the little room that held a microphone. Kurt sat down in one of the chairs and motioned for him to sit.
“First off...as long as you're okay with it I'd like to record this first and make it your first single...”
“Why? Don't you want a big club song to start off with?”
“I don't. I would rather something tamer for your first song. And this song stuck out at me...”
“Well, I wrote one last night...I want you to see it and tell me what you think...”
Blaine pulled out the sheet of paper from his folder and handed it to Kurt. It was something that had struck him out of nowhere.
“I want to rework the lyrics but until then this is the rough draft.”
“I like the concept and yeah, some lyrics need to change but overall it's very good,” Kurt said. Blaine smiled at the praise and looked down.
“Here's what I want for Holding On...” Kurt said as he started playing music. No lyrics were played with it but Blaine could hear them in his head. The music was simple and mainly guitar but the ending picked up into a faster beat. There were some computer generated sounds but the song flowed nicely overall.
“So...what did you think?”
“I love it!” Blaine said.
“Good! When do you want to start recording it then?”
“Whenever...”
Kurt looked over at him smiling. Blaine felt his heart stutter and he looked down trying to avoid his gaze. They spent the next few hours going over some sheet music and finally Blaine got into the little room and put the headphones on. This was step one to his dream...
“Okay Blaine...we're going to start. Exactly how I told you...” Kurt said. He hit the button and the music started playing.
“Nearly two years later and the scars are still fresh...I can't let them heal for the fear of losing you. I still wake up in the middle of the night...scared to go to bed and see your face. Every day...I try to hold on longer to your memory but it's breaking me...down...” he sang.
“I keep holding on thinking maybe it's all a dream and I'll wake up but I never do. I keep thinking you'll be next to me but when I look over to your still gone. And your side of the bed is still cold. I want to move on to be in another person's arms but I keep holding onto you and it won't let me be...”
Blaine finished the chorus and bit his bottom lip. The music stopped and Kurt's voice came over the headset.
“Blaine? Are you okay?”
He took the headphones off and let the tears fall. He heard the room's door open and comforting arms wrap around him. Blaine turned his head into Kurt's chest and put his arms around him.
“Okay...maybe this was the wrong song choice...”
“I'm okay...I just haven't touched this song in a while...” Blaine said.
“I know it's for your boyfriend. Are you going to be okay...?” Kurt asked hesitantly. Blaine nodded and Kurt pulled away. He pulled another stool over to him and sat on it.
“Yeah...”
“Do you want to talk about it?” Kurt asked. He really didn't want to but before he knew it the words were flowing between his lips.
“We were together since high school...we came here to go to school together for pre-law. We planned on applying to Harvard for law school. We had our whole life planned out. We were going out to celebrate me passing all of my exams and...we were in a car accident. The last thing I remembered before losing consciousness was his arms wrapping around me to protect me...” Blaine started.
“Go on if you want...” Kurt said.
“I woke up in the hospital being told he only had a ten percent chance of survival. When I got discharged I went to see him...I sat there for a few minutes holding his hands. I got up and leaned in to kiss him. When I did and pulled back the heart monitor flat lined and I was pushed away as nurses came in the room. I watched him die in front of me. One nurse ushered me out of the room and I was taken to my apartment.”
“What happened after that?” Kurt asked. His one hand had come out and taken Blaine's in his. His hand was warm and comforting. His skin was smooth and he ran a thumb over his knuckles.
“I dropped out of school and moved to a new apartment where nobody would find me...I got a job at a coffee shop and lived my days out like that...then I started playing at the coffee shop and the rest is history...” Blaine said.
“Blaine...where do you live?”
“In the lower part of the city in a crappy apartment complex...”
“Look...I don't live with my boyfriend. We haven't taken that step yet. But, would you consider coming to stay with me?”
Blaine looked up at him surprised. Why would Kurt offer him a place to stay?
“I really care for you Blaine and I want you to be safe. You said there was fighting in your apartment complex and it happens a lot from how you sounded...so please. Leave that place and come stay with me until you can afford your own place...”
“I don't want to be a burden...”
“You wouldn't be. And you could work on your music at my place. I have a room filled with instruments to work with...”
“Are you sure?” Blaine asked. Kurt smiled at him and nodded his head.
“Positive.”
“Then yes...I'll come stay with you.”
“Then tomorrow evening after we're done here I'll drive you to your place and we can get your stuff...”
“I don't have a lot so I can just bring it with me to work...”
“Nonsense...we'll make sure you get everything. Do you want to finish the song or do another?”
“Can we work on another for now?”
“Of course!”
They spent the next few hours working on sheet music and what would sound best with certain songs. Blaine avoided making any songs have a pop influence. He loved pop music but he didn't want it for his own. When he finally stepped into his apartment complex he walked up to his apartment. His door was cracked open. He walked over hesitantly and pushed the door open. Some guy was rummaging through his drawer that contained his savings and where he kept the chain with Sebastian's ring on it. He put his hand to his shirt and realized it wasn't around his neck. Blaine gasped and the guy looked up at him surprised. In his hand was the cash Blaine had been saving up and the chain. Blaine ran at the guy but he was pushed down. Something connected with his head and darkness took over.
