“Hey, sleepy head,” Kurt said. It was only nine at night but Blaine was always up early in the mornings. Blaine smiled at him and sat up against the arm of the couch.
“Hey...how was work?” he asked.
“Same as usual. Designs, working on the show, and more designs,” Kurt replied.
“Sounds fun. I get to deal with college kids that still act like they're in middle school.”
“That sounds like a ton of fun. Come on, I'm going to shower and we can head to bed,” Kurt replied standing up. As Blaine was standing up their phone rang. Kurt looked at Blaine confused. Nobody ever called this late unless it was important. The last time they had gotten this call was because Carole had been taken to the Emergency Room. Kurt rushed to answer the phone.
“Hello?” he asked as he picked it up.
“Hi, is a Blaine Anderson there?” a woman's voice asked.
“Yes, one moment,” Kurt said holding the phone out to him. Kurt figured it had something to do with the school until he heard a choked sob. He looked back from the kitchen doorway and saw Blaine had tears streaming down his face. He hung up the phone and Kurt ran over to him and held him. He rocked Blaine back and forth and waited for him to calm down before he asked. When the sobs quieted he moved to look down into the hazel eyes.
“What's wrong?”
“It's Cooper...”
“What about him? Is Caleb okay?” Kurt asked worried.
“Him and N-Natalie were in a c-car accident...we were l-left C-Caleb...” Blaine said bursting into tears once more. Kurt felt the initial shock take over and then he buried his face in Blaine's curls letting the tears fall and soak his hair. Kurt doesn't know when they finally got up but it was a long time after the call.
“Wait...we were left Caleb?”
“We are his Godparents. Cooper told me a while ago that he and Natalie made a will. In the will they said that if anything were to happen to them we get custody of Caleb.”
“So, we need to fly out to California now?” Kurt asked.
“We need to be there as soon as possible,” Blaine replied quietly. Kurt nodded and stood up and went to his bag. He pulled out his laptop and ordered them the tickets they needed. He got their luggage out and packed their clothes. He wished he could get Blaine up and just do something to try and keep his mind off of it but he knew he couldn't. Blaine had just gotten his relationship with his brother repaired a few years and now this. They were only 26! They didn't plan on kids for a few more years. They'd just gotten married the year before.
He remembered the day they got the call from Cooper. Natalie was having their son and they stayed up anxiously waiting the call telling them that everything went smoothly. And it did. Caleb Michael Anderson was born on June 28th, 2020 and him and Blaine were ecstatic. They flew out the next day to meet their nephew. He could still remember the look on Blaine's face as he held Caleb for the first time and then the conversation later on that night about having their own kids. Kurt wasn't against it but he just wanted to get stable in their careers and then talk about kids. Now, they were getting a kid and it was on the worst terms possible.
He picked up their luggage and walked into the living room. Blaine was still on the floor looking at absolutely nothing. Kurt walked over to him and sat down next to him and wrapped his arms around him.
“Come on. We need to leave now for our flight. I have everything we needed packed.”
Blaine nodded and Kurt stood up taking his hand and helping him up. Kurt kissed him and then they left. They got into Blaine's car and Kurt drove them to the airport. The flight took hours and one stop but soon they were off and in California. He called them a cab and took it to the hospital. There they were asked to identify the couple to make sure it was them. Kurt had gone in with Blaine and they both sadly nodded that it was them. A few minutes later they were handed Caleb. Blaine took him from the woman whose care he had been under until they got there. Kurt watched as he smiled sadly at the three month old boy.
A few days later after planning and letting family know, the funeral was held. They were buried side by side in a graveyard a few minutes from their old house. The house had been put up for sale and the money would be put into a fund for Caleb that he'd have access to when he turned 18. After they got everything they'd need they finally boarded their flight back to New York. Blaine held Caleb for most of the ride and once Blaine had fallen asleep he took Caleb in his arms. He woke up revealing his once blue eyes were now hazel. Kurt kissed his forehead and smiled down at Caleb as he yawned and closed his eyes. He didn't realize he had fallen asleep until the weight in his arms disappeared. He looked over to see Blaine had taken him.
“Sorry...I didn't mean to wake you. How are you feeling?” Blaine asked.
“I'm...okay. I guess. How are you?”
“Could be better,” Blaine replied. Kurt reached over and put his hand on Blaine's arm and rubbed his thumb over the spot. Finally after a few hours they landed and were on their way back to their apartment. Kurt had called Rachel while in California to go to their apartment and get a nursery set up. He asked her if she could charge it all and he'd give her the money for it. She had agreed and asked what he wanted done. He asked her to just get the necessities until him and Blaine got back to talk about it.
Kurt opened their apartment door and saw Rachel and Finn on the couch. She was holding their two year old daughter, Vivian, as they talked. When they saw him they jumped up and Rachel handed Finn their daughter. She took the carrier from Blaine and set it on the chair and took Caleb out.
“Has he eaten?”
“He's due soon...” Kurt replied tiredly.
“I'll take care of it,” Rachel said as Kurt put their bags down.
“No. I'll take care of him,” Blaine said taking Caleb from her arms. Kurt watched him pick up the diaper bag and go into the kitchen. He sighed and ran his hand through his hair. He closed his eyes and he felt arms wrap around him.
“Are you okay?” Rachel asked.
“I'll be fine...I'm just worried about Blaine. He's been obsessive over Caleb. I just hope...I just want him to be okay.”
“I know...he will be. The shock needs to wear off. You two were just handed a baby and said you're his parents now. It's not easy to get adjusted.”
“Everything you need is in your guest room. I got all of it together,” Finn said.
“Thank you so much Finn,” Kurt replied, hugging his brother. The two left a few minutes later and he walked into the kitchen to check on Blaine. He was sitting on one of the kitchen chairs feeding Caleb his bottle. He smiled at the sight and took his phone out and took a picture. He saved it and set it as his wallpaper on his phone. He moved closer to them and put his hand under Blaine's chin. He moved his head up and sighed at the bloodshot eyes and the black bags underneath them.
“I can finish here. Go to bed. You really need it,” Kurt said.
“I'm fine. I want to finish...” Blaine said.
“No. Don't fight me with this. Just go. I'm going to be up for a while anyway,” Kurt said. Blaine sighed in defeat and handed Caleb over to him. Kurt put the bottle to his lips and watched as Caleb started to drink again. He watched Blaine drag himself into the bedroom and he sat down on the chair Blaine had occupied. When Caleb was done he started to burp him and waited to hear the little sound. When he knew Caleb was done and laid in the bassinet in the living room he called his father.
“Kurt? It's late kid...what's wrong?”
“I don't know how to tell you this...so bear with me, please?”
“Of course kid! Are you and Blaine okay?”
“We're fine. It's just...Cooper and his wife died in a car accident,” Kurt said.
“Oh no...is Blaine okay? Are you okay?”
“I don't know of he's okay. He's been quiet for a while and fawning over...Caleb. Their son. We were left Caleb. As his Godparents we got him and it was in their will. We just got back home. Caleb's asleep for now,” Kurt said.
“Wow...you two weren't planning on kids yet though, right?”
“No. So this doesn't interrupt any plans we had. I talked to Blaine about it on our plane though. We've decided to move back to Ohio. We want to raise him around family and those that knew Cooper. Blaine wanted to look at houses in Westerville and I said Lima. We're going to look at both and see what we can find and what works for us both. However, I think Westerville is the better choice,” Kurt said.
“Whatever you need to do kid. Just be smart,” Burt said.
“We will be. Look, I just wanted to call and let you know. I'll call you when we know we're coming back,” Kurt said.
“Okay. Goodnight, bud.”
“Goodnight, Dad,” Kurt said and hung up. He put his phone down and turned back to Caleb. He laid down on the couch and rubbed his eyes. He fell asleep there hoping Blaine was asleep. Kurt hoped Blaine would stay asleep all night and Kurt would take care of Caleb.
