"Daddy! I like the kindergarten I'm at now-do I have to look around? It'll probably be all smelly and pink..." Kurt complained to his dad as they were driving to Coriander Park Hill kindergarten. Kurt was quite happy where he was.
Kurt was a 7 year old who was incredibly smart; and acted like a young man. He loved playing rough with all the other boys and he liked to play tea parties with the girls (but only secretly). He found out that holding hands with boys was weird, because two weeks ago he held James' hand after school and passers by gave him odd looks.
James was his best friend in the whole world because he was funny. And smart. And just nice.
As Burt drove into a parking space, Kurt could see how bland the scenery was from out his window. He was still in a booster seat, although he was convinced that he didn't need one.
"Daddy there are no trees, where will I play hide and seek?"
Burt rolled his eyes as he opened his car door, "Kurt, just look around for me and your mum. She's very proud of you already for coming, and you know we wouldn't be here if everything was alright at your kindergarten."
Kurt liked his kindergarten, just not all the people in it. There was James, who of course stuck up for him all the time, but then there was Jessica who teased him. Jessica had a possy who followed her everywhere, they always called him name like 'poo' or childish words like that. Kurt hated it but he barely took any notice now.
"But daddy they stopped a few days ago when I said I might be moving! I like it there..." Kurt was on the verge of tears, but he tried to show his dad what a brave boy he can be.
"OK Kurt..let's just see what it's like. You might love it!" Burt was unstrapping Kurt from his booster seat, when he spotted another family walking across the car-lot.
"Hey look Kurt there's another boy who looks your age! Shall we talk to them?" Burt have his son a warm smile, and Kurt returned it as eagerly.
He jumped out of the car and strode over to the family. The parents were in deep conversation when Kurt held his arm out to them.
"Hello. I'm Kurt Elizabeth Hummel, and if I'm not mistaken you must be here for open...eve...even..."
"Evening dear." The mother spoke up, quite taken aback by Kurt's confidence.
"Yes that's the one!" Kurt drowned in the lady's eyes-they were a gorgeous emerald green. She looked quite young and like she would invite Kurt over for tea regularly.
The lady took Kurt's hand and shook it gently, Kurt curtsied. He was trying to give the perfect impression.
"I'm Mrs. Anderson, and this is my husband and son Blaine." Kurt noticed a very shy looking boy standing behind his father. He didn't make any eye contact with him at all.
Mr. Anderson nudged Blaine gently, "Say hello Blaine."
Kurt could make out a discreet "Hi."
"Sorry love, Blaine's very shy meeting new people."
"Well never fear Blaine, I'm nice really. We'll have lots of fun playing soccer together?"
Burt had finally managed to walk over from the car to greet the Anderson family. While the adults were exchanging compliments Kurt walked round to see Blaine properly.
He had a mop of curly brown hair that looked like pig tail soup, but his eyes were captivating. They were even deeper than his mother's. He could look at them for hours.
"I'm Kurt, shall we go inside?" He added a fond smile at the end to try and make Blaine less nervous-he looked terrified!
"I'm really sorry I'm not speaking much, I'm really nervous..."
"It's alright. I don't really want to here either, but things at my kindergarten aren't good at the moment." Kurt encouraged a smile out of Blaine and he took his hand to lead him inside.
Blaine instantly felt at ease in Kurt's presence.
"Oh looks like the kids want to go and look around!" said Mr. Anderson.
"More like go and play." whispered Kurt, and Blaine giggled.
"You have a nice laugh. It's like..." Kurt struggled to find the right words so he decided to drop it.
As they trudged over the gravel the boys realised they were still holding hands. Neither boy pulled away.
'Out hands fit nicely together,' thought Kurt.
As Burt and the Anderson family were chatting, Kurt and his new friend were
talking about their hobbies.
"I like to dress up, but don't tell anyone apparently it's weird for a boy to do that. But I also like football too!"
"I like playing with my mum's hair, but my dad doesn't like me doing that..."
"You can play with my hair whenever you want!"
Blaine smiled at his new friend's response.
They finally managed to get inside and the boys were overwhelmed by colours and people.
There were paintings on the wall of houses, animals and people. Posters were all around the room, masking the damp patches on the wall. Kurt instantly knew that he'd like to give the kindergarten a makeover, and was deep in thought when Blaine nudged him.
Purple on the walls, and nice plush cream carpets on the floor...
"Kurt, she looks nice, shall we go and ask her what to do?"
Kurt looked at the lady who Blaine pointed to: she was quite small, plump and had dark brown hair that just passed her shoulders. She looked the age of Blaine's mother.
She caught the boys' eyes and gave them both a warm smile.
Kurt an unsure smile, as if telling her he didn't know what to do next.
She walked over to them and crouched; putting her arms round the two of them.
"Are you OK? I'm Helen and you must be..." She checked a sheet of paper that she pulled out of her jeans pocket. "Kurt and Blaine?" Helen got the two boys mixed up so Kurt spoke up.
"I'm Kurt and this is Blaine." He suddenly felt shy, but at ease with Helen.
"Where are your parents boys?" Just as Helen had said this Burt appeared behind Kurt.
"Ah, you must be Kurt's father. It's lovely to meet you." Helen held out her hand and Burt took it firmly.
"Blaine's parents had to go home but they'll be here to pick him up in a few hours."
Blaine physically slumped and Kurt heard a sigh come from him.
"Well let's let the boys go and play then." Burt placed his hands on Kurt's little shoulders as he said this.
"Yay! Where shall we go first Blaine?l" Kurt was excited now because he could have Blaine to himself to talk and play with him.
Blaine shrugged.
"Let's go and paint!" Kurt grabbed Blaine's hand and pulled him over to the empty paint stand.
"What will you paint Blaine? I'm going to paint you!" Kurt grinned and picked up a paintbrush and dipped it into the green paint. He shot Blaine a sly smile and sloshed his brush all over the page.
Blaine was yet to pick up a brush.
"Are you not going to paint? Oh I'm sorry if you didn't want to come over here first!" Tears welled up in both the boys' eyes but Blaine was first to let it out. He ran straight into the bathroom next to him.
"Blaine!"
Kurt dashed into the bathroom to hear Blaine sob in one of the stalls.
"Blaine, let me in? I want to help you. But first, I'm really sorry if I upset you by taking you to the painting area." Kurt sat by the door and waited for Blaine to come out. The sobbing had stopped but no movement from inside the stall.
"You can't stay there forever you know. You have no food or water-well you could drink from the toilet but that's disgusting!"
A choked giggle came from inside the stall.
Blaine unhooked the bolt and stepped outside. He had puffy eyes, and a blotchy face.
Kurt stood up and hugged Blaine, just like his Mom does. He felt Blaine melt into his arms and he spoke up, "You can tell me anything even though we just met. We probably won't even see each other again."
"My 'rents areneverhere forme." was Blaine's response in between breaths although Kurt understood perfectly.
He walked over to get some tissues for his friend.
"I'm really sorry about this Kurt," Blaine managed. "I thought my parents would stay with me. It sounds stupid doesn't it? That I'm crying over this."
"Not at all! Blaine between you and me, I cry when we run out of Golden Syrup at home..."
Blaine sniggered at this and felt a lot better.
Determined not to let it ruin the open evening, Blaine hauled himself up.
"Let's go and explore!" He had stopped crying and wanted to have fun with Kurt!
"Kurt, do you mind if I call you my friend? I know we've only kinda just met but I feel like I'm closer to you than some of my other friends." Kurt beamed at this, and Blaine took it as a yes.
They both strolled out of the loos and were greeted with paper given to them by Helen.
"Listen boys, now most of us have finished playing, we need you both to write a letter for us about why you want to come here."
Blaine took the sheet of paper with his name on it, and Kurt his.
Helen directed them to a table with pencils and the boys set to work on their letter. The kindergarten seemed so different now because there were no immature (as Kurt would call them) children running around: they were all sat at tables whispering and writing.
Kurt leaned in to Blaine, "What shall we put?"
Blaine smiled and began to write, but covering his sheet up with his arm.
"Aww come on Blaine! Tell me, tell me, tell me!"
Blaine shook his head and said, "When I'm done and then you can write the same thing."
Kurt reluctantly nodded his head and pretended to write whenever a helper came near.
After 10 minutes Blaine had finished and shifted the paper over to Kurt.
I want to come here bekause my frend kurt mite be going here. He is my fayvorit frend bekause he helps me when I am sad and plays with me.
"That's really nice Blaine!" Kurt furiously copied the words down but changed the name to Blaine. Once he was done tey handed them over to Helen.
"Thank you very much boys! I do hope we'll see you soon." All the other kids were grabbing coats and scarves from pegs.
Kurt didn't know where Burt had been throughout the day but he appeared with Kurt's jacket and hat.
"What you mean it's time to go? I don't want to, me and Blaine haven't played yet."
"Come on kiddo. We need to go and see Mom don't we?"
Blaine looked sad when Kurt put his coat on. He might never see him again.
"But Dad, Blaine's parents aren't here yet, can we wait until they are?"
Helen spoke up, "We can wait with him honey. Don't you worry."
Kurt's opinion of her had gone right down in his mind.
"Well if you can't stay don't worry. Hopefully we'll both come here in a bit!" Blaine walked over to Kurt and gave him a hug, and secretly held his hand.
"They fit perfectly."
Kurt let go first, and smiled at him not needing to say a thing. It was all in his eyes.
"Don't worry about the bathroom accident. Helen will clean it up."
Blaine had no idea as to what Kurt meant, but then realised it was his conversation about his parents.
One last smile from Blaine and Kurt was being pulled away by Burt towards their car.
"You seem to like this Blaine don't you?"
"Yes Dad, I do. I'm gonna tell Mom all about him!" Kurt began to hum along with the song on the radio on the way home.
He did want to go to that kindergarten after all, and hopefully see Blaine soon.
