Even though he missed his father and his new step-family terribly and hated that he was constricted to wearing the same outfit for days on end, he decided a few days into life at Dalton that he sort of loved the place.
He received an abundance of texts from Mercede’s keeping him up to date with the goings on of New Directions and his friends, Kurt liked the fact that even after he left McKinley the drama never ended, the glee clubs love lives getting even more tangled together.
He also found himself being dragged to Warblers practices by Blaine every week. Kurt didn’t really know how he felt about the group of male singers yet, they were so different to the New Directions, not in a bad way, they just lacked the unpredictability of his old club, and he missed the un-organised chaos that used to surround him. He hadn’t gotten used to the structure of the club and the way his left field ideas were almost always shot down, however there was one particular part of the Dalton Warblers he most definitely did like. A lot.
“What are you thinking about?” a soft voice broke Kurt from his train of voice and the familiar quickening of his heart beat followed as he stared into the questioning eyes.
“Oh, nothing really, just how much my life has changed in such a short amount of time I guess.” as he said it he felt a blush creep over his face as he thought to himself ‘Actually I was thinking about you, you, you.’
“Well you fit in perfectly, and you’re keeping up academically, better than most of the guys who have been in the class all year actually.” Blaine smiled at him and his heart fluttered. “Not to mention that all the Warblers love you, Wes is so excited that we have another countertenor in the group, it’s sickening” he sighed closing his chemistry book and focusing his full attention on Kurt.
This is what they did every Friday afternoon, not giving themselves over to the weekend fully they’d sit in the library and study together before going to Warblers practice. Kurt would help Blaine with his French coursework, secretly reveling in the fact that he was marginally better than Blaine in a subject and Blaine would help Kurt with his chemistry homework.
If ever there was a pun intended it was then Kurt thought to himself. He didn’t really need help with his Chemistry, he just loved the way Blaine’s face scrunched up in concentration as he helped Kurt with his formula’s and the how he blushed red every time he explained something wrong, it was one of the rare moments when Kurt was able to see Blaine without his perfect mask one, reminding him he was human just like Kurt.
“If they love me so much they’d give me a bit more of an input” Kurt sighed absentmindedly running his fingers through his already perfect coif.
Blaine looked at Kurt seriously; his eyes pouring into the others, when Blaine looked at him like that Kurt had to remind himself to breath because it was like he was staring into his soul.
“Kurt, you know what it’s like here, the Warblers are different to New Directions. You’ll get a chance to shine I know it.” He smiled at him making Kurt’s heart flutter.
“I think I’d have to kill their star performer off first” Blaine smiled and looked down embarrassed. “But I would never do that” Kurt sighed beginning to pack his things away into his bag “then who would I tease for their hair gel reliance all the time, and who would help me with my chemistry homework?” Kurt flashed Blaine a dazzling smile and stood up. “Let’s not keep Wes waiting, we all saw what he did to Jeff with his gavel when he was late last week.”
Kurt shuddered at the thought as Blaine fell into step with him pulling his bag over his shoulder, as they walked through the door Blaine whispered “I know you don’t really need help with your chemistry homework, I like spending time with you though, so for now I’ll keep pretending you do.” his breath was hot on Kurt’s ear and he swallowed audibly as he smiled at Blaine before following him into the Warblers practice room.
Once again he sat through a Warblers practice questioning every single aspect of his relationship with Blaine, it was confusing at best and Kurt didn’t truly know where he stood with Blaine. But as he watched him shamelessly walk all over every piece of furniture in the room practicing their song for sectionals he thought he didn’t mind waiting to find out what they could become.
“I cannot believe we tied” Kurt gushed as he sat next to Blaine on the bus back to Dalton. “I mean, we both won Blaine, now I don’t even have to feel bad about beating my friends!” He flashed Blaine one of his more dazzling smiles and sank back into his chair sighing happily.
Blaine looked at him amused, he really was something to look at after all. “Stop” his mind told him, he sighed inwardly. He seemed to be having more and more arguments with himself lately, always about Kurt. Not that he could help it, his new friend was just so inexplicably wonderful and he didn’t have a clue what to do about it.
He was his mentor, the person who was meant to be guiding him through his transition to Dalton and helping him overcome what had happened at McKinley yet he kept starring confusedly at the constantly blurred lines of their relationship and wondering “but what if…”
“….and when Brittany and Mike did that dance break I was sure we were gone” Blaine pulled himself back into reality and nodded his head in agreeance with Kurt.
“I know, I hate to admit it but I was nervous too.” and it was the truth, as much as people though he was always cool, calm and collected Blaine had gotten a twisting knot of nerves in his stomach as he watched the New Directions perform.
“Well, you needn’t have worried, everything turned out perfectly” Kurt smiled at him resting his hand on his for the briefest of moments before taking it away back to his own lap. That moment was all Blaine needed though, instantly his thoughts started hurriedly swirling around in his head, the mental image of himself and Kurt as friends blurring together into something that was maybe a bit too friendly.
“Blaine?” Kurt was staring at him again. “Lost you for a minute there. Come one everyone’s getting off” at that sentence Blaine started and looked around as the rest of the guys excitedly jumped off of the bus with talks of late night snacks in the Warbler commons.
He stood up and grabbed his bag brushing Kurt’s hip with his hand as he did so, he felt Kurt stiffen from his touch and looked quickly to see him blushing red, obviously averting eye contact. They got off the bus in silence and followed the rest of the Warblers, both aware of the slightly electric feeling between them. Blaine’s mind wandered again as he held the door open for Kurt, his eyes travelling down to look at him in a rather un-dapper place as he sauntered through the door. Blaine swallowed as he followed him inside cursing himself inwardly for the twelfth time that day and tried to focus on something that wasn’t below Kurt’s eye level for the rest of the night. “This was going to be difficult.”
