“Well neither have you!” snapped Blaine.
“That was a well-established fact. You skirted around that little detail.”
“Well, I have been with my dad. When I was ten. I didn’t think it would be too hard to pick up.”
Kurt sighed and massaged the side of his head, surveying their campsite. It had taken twenty minutes to pitch the tiny tent, and the fire simply refused to light. Kurt agreed to go camping because it seemed like an easy fall break and Blaine was so excited, but Kurt was beginning to regret the decision.
“I think using more lighter fluid should get things going,” Blaine was mumbling. Kurt watched him douse the three huge logs before attacking it again with the box of matches. Kurt couldn’t help it- he laughed.
Blaine looked up, hurt. “Come on, I really want this to work.”
Kurt crouched beside him and patted his leg. “You know I’m just joking around, sweetie. Mind if I try?”
…
After a frustrating hour of nothing more than sparks, the pair decided to give up and get dinner from a gas station they’d seen right before pulling into their campsite. Kurt didn’t even try to be healthy, opting for a cheeseburger just like Blaine, though he did forgo the chocolate milkshake that the latter insisted on having. Kurt kept stealing glances at Blaine, trying to see if he was still disappointed from their debacle of failing to making a fire. However, he seemed content enough, and suggested they enjoy their meal in a nearby field. Kurt agreed quickly and spread out a blanket just big enough for them to share.
As they finished off the last of their meal, there were already a number of stars out, even with the gas station lights. Blaine lay on his back and gestured to Kurt, who quickly snuggled into his boyfriend’s arm. The pair just laid there for a few minutes before Blaine said, “You know, these are the kind of stories we’ll be telling our kids one day.” It wasn’t the first time Blaine had spoken like that, of their future together, but it never failed to give Kurt butterflies in his stomach. Blaine could see so much hope for them, and even though it scared him, so could Kurt. Kissing Blaine on his cheek, he whispered, “I know.”
