Friday night movie and he was forced to sit through whatever B-class horror he had picked. Even then it was mostly to point out how unlikely it was that there were souls with unfinished business floating around all over the place trying to do in death what they couldn’t in life. The idea was ridiculous.
When the Hummel-Hudsons moved into their new house after Burt and Carole’s wedding, Kurt was excited. He had a brand new bedroom to decorate – a brand new canvas with which to work. He immediately got to making it look perfect.
That was exactly when things began getting strange.
It was barely noticeable at first. Kurt would place something on a shelf and find it had moved several inches from its original spot when he looked at it again. He blamed it on how drafty his room was, on his terrible short-term memory, on him not being used to the room yet. He refused to even let himself consider that it might be anything out of the ordinary.
Later, it became things falling off the shelves completely, even though Kurt could have sworn that he had placed them as securely and as far away from the edge as he could have. He had had to dive to save a framed photo of him and Mercedes and after it had flung from the highest shelf seemingly of its own accord. He had tried putting it in the same place four or five times after that with similar results, before finally trying it on a different shelf. The picture stayed put, and Kurt figured that there had to be something wrong with the shelf he had placed it on.
He didn’t know exactly when he noticed it, but he began to see that through the way the objects moved and fell, his room was sort of styling itself. He joked to himself that there must be some kind of sassy spirit making sure his bedroom looked as fabulous as it could, and he could have sworn he heard a small chuckle in reply, but he dismissed that as hearing Finn through the ridiculously thin wall between their bedrooms.
Kurt was still convinced that there had to be some kind of logical explanation for it. Things didn’t just rearrange themselves and while he could joke about it, he refused to believe that there was anything supernatural happening in his room.
After all, a small suburban house in Lima Ohio was hardly the setting for a chilling ghost story.
