Kurt looked up from the TV, his legs tucked underneath him as he turned his eyes on Rachel, who was busily straightening out her shirt and acting like she was going to go somewhere. Her hair was styled and her make up looked fresh. “Going somewhere without me, Rach?” he teased lightly, putting the TV on mute so that he could pry.
Rachel ran both hands under her hair to get some of her hair out of where it was tucked under her shirt as she grinned over at Kurt. “I don’t have to share every aspect of my personal life with you, Mr. Hummel,” she said, playfully pointing a finger in his direction.
Kurt gave a small laugh, leaning back against the cushions of the couch as he crossed his arms, “And since when are you Miss Secretive, huh? You’d always spill every detail when you went out with Brody. What’s so private that you can’t tell me?”
Rachel grinned, moving to plop down on the couch next to him. The truth was, for the past week or so, she had been in contact with Blaine and helping him to arrange a masterplan to get Kurt’s forgiveness and win him back. The plan included lots of chocolate, ideas taken from The Notebook and Sleepless in Seattle, and lots of tears on Blaine’s behalf. They didn’t actually talk about the tears, but Rachel knew waterworks were a must. And Rachel was confident that their plan was fool proof.
Rachel was getting ready to go to the airport and pick Blaine up, his flight due to be landing soon. She was just waiting for him to text and let her know- “Kurt. Turn the TV up,” she then said, pointing at the screen, her voice a little anxious.
Kurt frowned as he watched Rachel’s expression turn, eyes moving back to the TV. The image on the screen was a fairly ruined looking plane. A small passenger plane by the looks of it, probably only fitting about forty or less. Kurt clicked the unmute button and turned it up a few notices in time to hear a female voice, “-…was crash landed on the interstate. Sources say that the pilot survived with critical injuries, but unfortunately the co-pilot did not. Flight 189 was Manhattan bound and had forty-seven passengers on board along with three flight attendants. It is said that none of the passengers got away unscathed, at least ten of them rumored dead.”
“Ohmygod,” Rachel breathed, a shaking hand covering her mouth as all of her color drained. The reported kept going on about how it would’ve been a worse, more chaotic landing if the pilot hadn’t taken action when he did.
Kurt’s eyebrows furrowed as he looked over to Rachel, “Rachel? What’s wrong? Rachel?!”
Rachel’s throat tightened up because... this couldn’t be right. She didn’t remember Blaine’s flight number, but she knew he was landing in Manhattan. “I-I’ll be back, Kurt. D-Don’t worry about it. I… gotta go-go and meet someone.” Because that couldn’t be Blaine’s plane. It just couldn’t be. She would go to the airport and he’d be there with his smiling face and a stupid bowtie, waving her down and she’d laugh about thinking that he was-
And before Kurt could even ask, Rachel was up and off the couch and out the door, leaving a very confused and concerned Kurt on the couch alone.
---
A few hours later, and Rachel still hadn’t returned home. Kurt was watching reruns of Friends, his feet propped up on the coffee table. It was his day off and he had the apartment to himself. He was going to ignore all rules of being ‘proper’ and ‘neat’ and just be lazy for one day. He felt like he deserved it.
He jumped very slightly as his phone rang, eyes darting over to his Iphone on the couch beside him. A picture of Finn popped up along with his name. He frowned a little, why was Finn calling him?
“Hello?” he answered, bringing to phone to his ear.
“K-Kurt? Have…” Finn hesitated, as if struggling for what to say, “Have you talked to anyone lately?”
Kurt simply became further confused, turning the TV down, “What do you mean? No... I’m at the apartment alone. And, unless insulting Ross’s sense of fashion is considered talking to anyone, I haven’t.”
“Okay…” Finn took a long, shaking breath and Kurt could hear voices in the background. “I know… you both aren’t really on talking terms, or whatever… but… B-Blaine…” Finn swallowed hard before continuing, “Blaine was in a bad accident, Kurt. He was… on this plane and-“ Kurt stopped hearing what Finn was saying, mind growing fuzzy and everything began to click into place. Because that’s why Rachel was freaking out. Blaine was on that plane.
He spoke, not even knowing if he was interrupting Finn or not, “Is he…” Okay? Alive? Still breathing? “Alright?”
The longer Finn was quiet, the more it worried Kurt, “N-No… he’s not. He’s...” Finn’s voice cracked, “He’s gone Kurt. He’s… gone. I mean, they have his heart working and some machine breathing for him… but they’re only keeping him on life support long enough for some family of his to fly in and… say good-bye. He’s gone…” Finn heard a loud clattering noise and he guessed that Kurt dropped the phone, his theory being further justified by muffled, distant gasp-like sobs. Blaine was gone.
