He slammed his hand down onto the cold surface of the station to stop the button from spinning. What was he doing? Blaine was half way to Ohio by now, probably already forgetting who he was. Kurt sighed heavily and then pushed himself up and off the station. He needed to do something, he needed to be productive, he needed to get his mind off of Blaine.
Like that was going to be easy, Kurt had spent the night before confessing his love for him at the door to his dorm. Now he was gone and he had to accept that. He pocketed the button and then walked back to his station. The dress form wore his completed outfit next to his stool. Kurt let his eyes linger over the detailing he had done. If this was not such a difficult day, he would actually be beside himself because he was particularly proud of this piece, if he could say so himself. Blaine’s dress form sat abandoned on the other side of the room.
Today was going to be harder to get through then he thought. He cast his eyes downward hoping to keep his eyes off of anything that reminded him of Blaine. That left barely anything so he furrowed his eyebrows and began doodling in his sketchbook.
The door to the studio swung open and Vaughn walked in with Blaine in toe.
“Wait...what? What are you doing here? I thought you left?” Warner stood up as they entered.
Blaine’s eyes went straight to Kurt’s figure that was hunched over his station with his ear buds stuffed in his ears and his lips moving in time to whatever song he was currently listening too. “Ummm, I changed my mind.”
“Glad to have you back.” Enid said drowsily from behind her sewing machine.
“Mmm.” Blaine responded, eyes still locked on Kurt.
Kurt felt the eyes burrowing in to his skull. He rolled his eyes and turned to find the owner being the last person he expected.
“Blaine...”
“Kurt.”
Blaine was at Kurt’s side quicker than he was ready for him to be. Kurt pulled the ear buds out and let them fall into his lap, without breaking his eye contact with the younger boy.
“You didn’t leave.”
“Let’s just say I had some sense knocked into me by an unlikely source.” Blaine looked back at Vaughn who was having a heated discussion with Warner.
Kurt bit his bottom lip as he tried to keep his emotions in check. At this distance, he could smell Blaine’s cologne and it was slowly driving him over the edge.
“How are you?”
Kurt jumped off his stool and threw his arms around Blaine’s neck. “I was starting to go crazy without you.”
Blaine put his hands on Kurt’s back, hugging him into his body. He smiled, “I was crazy to leave.”
They stared into each other’s eyes for a long period of time, realizing they had never been this close to each other before. Blaine began to shift his weight under Kurt’s touch as he was suddenly very aware of his own body and every inch of skin that touched the other boy suddenly became hot.
“Blaine! You are back!” A booming voice called from the other side of the room.
Kurt and Blaine quickly separated from each other as if getting caught making out by their parents. Brock made his way towards them, arms outstretched in triumph.
“Thank the stars above that you are back.”
Blaine looked to Kurt. “I had a few reasons to stay.”
Brock waved his hand in front of their faces. “I can not believe what Callahan did to you. It got me to thinking.... I am not sure I want a man like that representing me and my company.”
“So what are you planning on doing?” Kurt quirked up his eyebrow.
Brock grinned maliciously. “I am going to fire Callahan.”
“Fire... Callahan? Can you do that?” Blaine looked between Kurt and Brock.
“Yeah, well it is Brock’s show, he can do with it as he pleases.” Kurt adopted Brock’s smile. “Who is going to run the show then? This is a very detailed and complicated show and someone needs to run it.”
Brock brought his eyes back to Blaine. “I think he should.”
Blaine’s breath hitched. “Me?”
“Yeah, why not? You would be great.” Kurt nudged him.
“I want someone I can respect and trust and I have grown to like you the most here Blaine.”
“Have you told Callahan yet?” Blaine asked in a small voice.
“No, in fact I have not seen him since your whole fiasco with him.”
Blaine looked over at Kurt who lipped ‘I am sorry’. He focused his gaze back to Brock. “Umm, well yeah. I will do it.”
Brock’s face lit up. “Thank you Blaine.” His smile broke when his phone rang from the holster on his hip. He grabbed it and slid his finger across the screen to unlock it. “It’s Sam.... I should go.” Brock pressed the phone to his ear and spoke to Sam in a whispered tone as he quickly left the room.
Kurt looked at Blaine first. Unsure of what to say now that they were again alone and in a close proximity to each other. Blaine turned toward the older boy who took a step back to put space between them.
“Kurt...do you have any left over blue fabric?”
Kurt looked from Blaine to his workstation and then back again. “Umm, yeah. Quite a lot actually...why?”
“I want to make something, for tomorrow.”
“Blaine, the show is tomorrow... we do not have the time for new projects.”
“We better start now.”
Kurt rolled his eyes because the last thing he wanted to do was start a new project but he knew himself well enough to know that he would do anything for Blaine. Even if it meant staying up all night sewing this new ‘project’ together. He reluctantly followed the younger boy back to his own work station.
-----
The models were running around backstage between the makeup area and back to where their first outifts were hung in waiting. To Blaine, it looked like chaos and it made his head spin. He watched the girls run back and forth in front of him while his headset hung around his neck which echoed Sam’s voice. Kurt ran up to Blaine and put his hands on his shoulders.
“You really need to snap out of it.”
“Why did I agree to this?”
“Oh no not this again.” Kurt deadpanned.
“What?”
“You are not going to stand here and put yourself down. No. You can do this Blaine. He chose you for a reason.”
Blaine looked at his feet.
Kurt sighed. “You second guess yourself too much. You are incredible Blaine.” He squeezed his shoulders tighter.
Callahan walked backstage and smoothed out the suit he was wearing. He saw Blaine and walked toward him, clearly on edge.
“What are you doing here?”
Blaine stood up taller in the hopes that it would make his feel more confident with the extra inch in height. “I was going to ask you the same thing.”
Callahan raised both of this eyebrows. “Last time I checked, I fired you from this show.”
“Yeah, well Brock hired me to run the show today.”
Callahan let out a hearty laugh. “Don’t be silly Blaine, that is my job and you know it.”
“Actually...” Brock had suddenly appeared at Callahan’s side. “You are fired Callahan, as of now.”
“Excuse me?” Callahan leaned forward with his ear pointed toward Brock in the effort to hear him better.
“You are fired. Done. Finished. Please leave immediately.”
Callahan’s head jerked back and he stared at Brock with his jaw hanging open. “You can not be serious. After everything that I have done for you?”
“You ruined all of that when you overstepped yourself with Blaine. I have filled your job so your presence is not necessary at this time. I am giving you the chance to leave like a civilized person. If you refuse, I will not hesitate in calling the security guards in here.”
Callahan let out and angry breath and spun around on his heels.
Kurt made an exciting sound as he squeezed Blaine’s shoulders a little harder while Blaine stared at the spot that Callahan once resided with a dazed expression.
“Sorry, I need to step out to catch my breath.”
Kurt instantly released him and nodded.
“Blaine we don’t have time, the show is about to start.” Brock looked at the chaos that was the backstage area with fearful eyes.
Kurt put his hand on Brock’s shoulder. “It is okay. I will help you until he comes back. Just give him a few minutes.” He began to push Brock further into the room and away from Blaine. He looked back and gave him a reassuring look so Blaine took this as his sign to escape. A long red curtain separated the backstage area from the audience. He took a deep breath and pulled it back and walked out to the arena where almost everyone was already sitting in their seats.
The DJ was playing loud, top 40 hits while the audience found their seats but he could still hear cheering and Santana’s voice calling out his name. He looked around and found Santana bouncing up and down in the third row.
“BLAINEY!” Santana repeated until Blaine came over to her and lightly kissed her on the cheek.
“Santana. I am...you are.... thank you. Thank you for coming.”
His eyes moved to the seat next to Santana where Brittany was currently residing, hands intertwined. Santana winked.
“Looks like the Bend and Snap worked after all.”
Santana glared at him as he suppressed a laugh.
“San here took me to the Emergency Room after she hit my nose, I was okay but it got pretty swollen.”
“It also gave us a good 4 hours together where we got to talk and I asked her out to dinner the next night.”
He smiled seeing how happy his friend was. “That is great, I am happy for you.”
“ANDERSON!”
Blaine looked up to see the whole row behind Santana was full of Warblers. He hurried over to them and gave them all hugs. “Please tell me I am not dreaming again?”
Wes exchanged confused glances with David.
“Uhhh no Blaine, we are here. In the flesh.” Nick moved his hands up and down to showcase the fact that he was indeed standing before him.
Jeff pinched Blaine.
“Oww! What was that for?”
“To prove it to you.” Jeff gave him a big cheesy smile.
“Thank you for coming guys. This show has been a roller coaster from the start.”
“We know, Kurt filled us in.” Santana said from behind him.
The Warblers nodded.
“Kurt told you about...what did he tell you.”
Santana turned around in his seat. “He told us about the asshole Callahan and that you are now the director of the whole fashion show.”
“Is Callahan here? I have been out of practice swinging my gavel but I could really use his face to re-familiarize myself with it.” Wes practiced a few swings with what looked like an imaginary baseball bat.
“That is not necessary guys. Really, getting him fired from this show is enough gratification for me.”
David raised his eyebrow. “Really?”
Blaine looked around before leaning in. “No, not really. If you do want to knock him around, I will turn around and pretend I do not see it happening.”
The boys grinned and shared fist bumps.
“Nobody messes with our Warbler Brother!” Jeff said rather loudly.
“This guy does not know what he is getting himself involved with, all of us are members of the Dalton Fight Club.” Nick cracked his knuckles.
“You guys are the best.” Blaine looked at his friends fondly. “I need to get back there so we can start the show. Thank you again for coming.”
“OH YEAH!” All four of them called loudly.
Blaine held a finger to his mouth to silence them but he could not help but smile. Seeing his closest friends here to support him on this important day gave him all of the confidence he needed to start the show. He ducked under the curtain where he noticed the line of models gathering beside him and Kurt was walking along the line giving them all last minute notes.
Blaine caught his eyes and curled his finger, motioning for Kurt to come closer.
Kurt adjusted one models dress before making his way back to Blaine. “Ready Mr. Director?”
“Thank you.”
Kurt’s smile faltered. “For what exactly?”
“For inviting all my friends to the show. Seeing them here really helps with my nerves.” Blaine looked down at his shoes again.
Kurt picked Blaine’s chin up so that they were looking each other in the eyes. “You are going to be great. Make sure to pace out the girls like we practiced and let me know if you need anything.”
“Right.” He nodded. “Thanks again Kurt.”
Brock came up behind Kurt and leaned over to whisper into his ear. Kurt turned to him and began to whisper back his answer. Brock looked even more confused and Kurt rolled his eyes and they began to walk off together.
“Brock, Kurt, wait!” He called after them which made them both halt and turn back towards him.
“Brock, I made you something, for you to wear tonight.”
Blaine scrambled to find a garment bag that he had hanging in the changing room. Brock looked at Kurt who was trying to distract himself from his gaze. Kurt knew what Blaine had made because he helped him and saw him in the studio working into the early hours of the morning on it. He knew how important it was to Blaine and hoped Brock appreciated all of the work he put into it. He returned and thrust the bag into the older Warbler’s hands, eliciting a wary smile from the young designer.
Brock opened the bag to see a navy blue blazer with red piping with the logo of the company stitched into the left chest pocket. His jaw fell open, looking at the younger man. “Blaine is this....is this supposed to be?”
He nodded. “Your very own, new and improved, Dalton Blazer.”
Brock’s eyes became large and glassy. “Blaine....thank you.” He removed his own jacket and discarded it on the floor. Modeling the new Blazer for Blaine, which fit snug against his muscular body.
“It looks perfect. You did a great job on it.”
Blaine put a hand on Kurt’s arm and pulled him in close.
“Can you stay after the show, I owe you a talk.”
Kurt drew quiet and nodded, placing his own hand on top of Blaine’s.
“Let’s get this show on the road.” Brock cued the DJ to start the show and Blaine let go of Kurt who instantly looked up at him.
“I’ll meet you back here. Remember to pace the models.” Kurt then took his place at the end of the line to help the models change into their next looks.
Blaine put his headset on his head, took a deep breathe and then let the first model walk out onto the runway.
-----
Blaine motioned for the models to clap as they entered the runway for their final walk. The individual designers took to the runway after them. Brock took his place at the end of the line, smoothing out his blazer under his hands.
“GO!” Blaine shouted over the music to the first model for her to start.
Warner avoided his gaze as he walked by. Vaughn reached over and squeezed his shoulder.
Kurt stopped in front of him, “Great show.”
He let out a deep breath. “Thank you.”
“You do not need to keep thanking me. You deserve all the compliments in the world.”
“No, I do. If it was not for you, I would not be standing in this spot tonight. I feel so sure of myself and my decision to change schools after doing this. I would of never seen the light if it was not for you guiding me there yourself. So, thank you, again. I don’t think I can ever really thank you enough.”
Kurt pressed his lips together, unable to think of a response. It was his time to walk out on the runway. “I have to walk now.”
“I know, we will talk after.”
“Right, meet back here.” Kurt gave a quick glance before sashaying down the runway, moving his hips in time to the music.
Blaine suddenly found himself distracted and Brock placing a hand on his arm brought him back to earth. He looked up at Brock who was grinning madly.
“C’mon Blaine, you need to walk too!” He pulled Blaine by the wrist onto the runway with him.
Blaine pulled the headset onto his neck as he looked over the audience. Everyone was on their feet and cheering. Santana was jumping up and down and waving at Blaine as he passed them. The Warblers cheered loudly and made cat calls at him as he passed which only made him blush a deep red.
At the end of the runway, Brock let go of Blaine and held his hands over him and the audience cheered louder. Brock then walked back up the runway and Blaine gave an awkward bow before following him.
-----
The models all left for the after party and the designers each cleaned up their stations. Blaine watched as the room slowly cleared, not wanting to move from the spot where he told Kurt to meet him. Brock and Sam had already said their goodbyes before leaving to go to the party themselves. He waited for a half hour, until the room had completely cleared. The cleaning crew were cleaning around the audience area and the last guests were slowly making their way out the door.
“Hey you.”
Blaine turned to find Kurt with his hands in his pockets, standing in the spot they agreed on.
“Hi.” Was all he could manage.
“Is this the right spot?” Kurt asked playfully.
Blaine picked up on this and gave a small smile. “That will do.”
Kurt began to sway back and forth.
“Kurt..”
“Blaine, you don’t have to-”
He cut him off. “Yes I do.” Blaine took a step closer. “I heard everything you said the other night.”
Kurt stopped moving and tilted his face away from the younger boy. “Oh, you did.”
“I did. I am sorry I did not say anything in the moment. I was just caught up in the emotion of it all.”
Kurt reached out for him but hesitated and his fingers ghosting over Blaine’s arm before he retracted it. “That is understandable, what happened to you was not okay. You had every right to be emotional.”
“But I feel the same way.”
Kurt’s lips slowly fell into a small O shape.
Blaine reached forward and took Kurt’s hands into his own. “Kurt, I love you too. I was so blinded before because of Warner but you came into my life and you treated me differently. You treated me in a way I should of been treated. I thought I lost everything that night. I was oblivious to how I felt about you. I had pushed the feelings away because I thought I was only supposed to have those feelings toward Warner.”
Tears prickled at the corners of Kurt’s eyes and he blinked to get them to disappear.
“Hearing you tell me that you loved me made me understand my feelings for you. I love you too Kurt. Call me crazy. but I can not help but have these feelings for you.”
“Blaine...
Blaine leaned forward and pressed his lips against Kurt’s, catching the older boy by surprise. If Blaine was not holding his hands, he probably would of collapsed right there. Kurt pulled back from the kiss first.
“Blaine...”
“Kurt.” Blaine responded with a smile plastered across his face.
Kurt dropped Blaine’s hands and then cupped his face, crashing their lips together in another kiss.
------
Blaine and Kurt entered the after party holding hands and grinning from ear to ear. Everyone was happy to see them, patting Blaine on the back and mumbling comments about the show. He could not hear a word they were all saying, everything was a blur and it felt like he was part of a dream sequence. He turned to Kurt, “I am going to get something to drink, do you want anything?”
“No I am fine.”
He made his way over to the cooler and found a chilled water bottle. His hand shook as he twisted the cap off, downing half the bottle in a single gulp. Blaine reached out and leaned his hand against the wall trying to steady himself while the details of the day played against his closed eyelids.
“Hey Blaine.” A familiar voice broke him from his trance.
He opened his eyes to see Warner twisting the top of a beer off, clearly tipsy. “Hello Warner.”
“You did a great job today.”
“Thank you, that means a lot, coming from you.”
Warner hummed a response against his bottle as he took a sip.
“Your piece turned out well. The model you had did a great job.”
“I know but I don’t want to talk about that. I want to talk about you.” Warner moved closer until his body was flush with Blaine’s.
“Umm, Warner.”
“Blaine, imagine this. You and me, creating our own line together. It will be incredible.”
“Excuse me?”
Warner ran the back side of his hand down Blaine’s cheek gently. “You are so gorgeous, why did I ever break up with you? We are perfect for each other.”
Blaine moved away from him. “I am sorry Warner but you missed your chance.”
“My chance?” He tilted his head to the side.
“Yes. You don’t get to break my heart and then prance back over whenever you feel like it and try to sweet talk your way back into my arms. I am sorry but it does not work that way anymore.”
“I did not take you seriously before, but that was then. I was wrong...I want to fix this.”
“I thought all along that if I would just be patient, you would come back to me and fall in love with me all over again. I wanted you to respect me and to see me as a designer, as someone worthy. I changed my life to be with you just so I would not lose you. But in the end Warner, you lost me.”
“We belong together.”
“Now here we are, in the exact scenario that I had pictured so many times in my head but it is far from what I want. You see, I finally discovered my true potential and it was not at your hand. You did play a part, I must give you that, because without me pushing myself to prove myself to you, I would have never discovered that I was worth so much more.”
Warner snickered and took another sip of his beer.
Blaine continued, unaware of the fact that Kurt was standing behind him. “I thought I would never recover from our break up but look at all of the things I was able to accomplish without you.” Blaine held his hands in the air and moved them outwards to indicate the party. “I got a new start, a do over if you will, when I enrolled here. A chance for me to find myself and to find my way in this world.”
He noticed Kurt in the corner of his eye and he pulled him up next to him by his hand. Warner looked at their clasped hands and finished off his bottle.
“I still have a journey ahead of me, I am not going to be perfect. I still have a lot to learn. This time though, when I fall, I have someone else to catch me.” He turned to Kurt. “I am not done yet, I am going to stay here and get what I deserve. A chance, a fighting chance at happiness.”
Kurt squeezed his hand.
Warner rolled his eyes and walked off towards Vaughn.
Kurt kissed him on the cheek.
“Did I just tell off Warner?”
Kurt laughed. “Yes. Yes you did. How do you feel?”
Blaine exhaled slowly. “So much better.”
------
A few years later...
Blaine sat up on stage, looking out onto the crowd of his peers and their families. It was finally their graduation day, he was done with school. Vaughn was currently at the mic, introducing him since he was their valedictorian of their graduating class.
Since he had a few minutes before he had to speak, he looked over all of his friends and familiar faces in the crowd. First person he saw was Enid, she just landed a job as a stylist for a tween star from the Disney Channel. Vaughn got a job as a buyer for a major local department store. Warner, well he barely passed and as of now, has no job opportunities. Vaughn dumped him their second year, not willing to put up with him anymore and that was when a friendship developed between them. Now, Vaughn was one of his closest friends.
Then there was Callahan, Brock made it his mission to black list him from many major corporations that he was close with, which was a lot more than they originally thought. He has not had much work outside of the university over the past few years because of it.
Kurt was sitting in the front row, dressed in one of his own suits which was impeccable. Kurt had already graduated the year before and had done a six month internship with Diane Von Furstenberg which gave him the drive to start his own line. He had been working hard over the last few months over his designs and was going to be showing this fall during New York’s Fashion Week in one of the smaller tents. Blaine and Kurt had been going out since the fashion show and had grown even closer. He noticed Kurt’s eyes on him so he blew him a kiss.
Santana moved her arms in front of Kurt’s face in the act of catching the kiss. Oh Santana, how could he forget her. She and Brittany had gotten married that last summer in small, quiet ceremony where Blaine had been the Man of Honor. They still credit Blaine’s bend and snap for getting them together. The four of them had grown very close over the past few years so seeing Santana and Kurt holding hands was not an odd occurrence.
“So please let me welcome to the podium your Valedictorian, Blaine Anderson.”
Vaughn’s voice dragged him out of his thoughts. He stood up and graciously walked over to the podium where he coasted his eyes over the crowd before starting his speech.
“For the people who knew me in high school, this is the last place they would expect me to be and to be honest, if you would of told me that I would be graduating from fashion school, I probably would of laughed in your face. Fashion School was never on my radar which surprises me on how much I grew to love it. I want to thank all of you who helped me succeed even when I did not think it was possible myself.” His eyes went straight over to Kurt. “And to the people who thought I would fail which pushed me to do better to prove them wrong.” He fixed his eyes on Warner who looked like he was trying to melt into his chair. “I am standing here today as proof that you can achieve anything that you set your mind too. I was able to find my way in the most unlikely of places. So I want to congratulate us, for never giving up and finding our own way.”
Everyone cheered as he ended his speech. Blaine’s eyes went back to Kurt who was beaming.
“Oh, and if you could give me one more second before we start the show.” Blaine stepped away from the podium, taking the mic with him and walked to the part of the stage directly in front of Kurt. He put his free hand into his pocket and grabbed onto the object in there.
“Kurt Hummel...”
Blaine dropped onto one knee. Kurt’s eyes grew wide.
“Please make me the happiest man I know and marry me.”
Kurt got up and ran up on stage. Blaine could distinctly hear the Warbler call from the back of the room. He opened the box to show an engagement ring inside a ring box surrounded by purple satin.
Kurt looked at it and then cupped his face. “Oh my god, yes. Yes! I will marry you.” He then leaned down and kissed him.
Blaine’s peers all jumped to their feet and threw their caps into the air.
Kurt had tears running down his cheeks and Blaine wiped them away. “Kurt, I love you.”
“I love you too.”
