Blaine had a secret weapon on this assignment though. He had Santana. She told him about the kind of dress she wished she had at prom and what was appopriate and what was not. Blaine however had gone to an all boys school so Santana's input really helped guide his design. They got to work quickly on sketches and within a few days, he had a working design that even impressed Kurt.
He walked into Callahan's class that first day back from break with a whole new sense of confidence. Looking around the room, no one else seemed to be as excited as him to show off their dress. To him, this was much more than an assignment. This was Blaine's chance to prove himself. He glanced over at Kurt who gave him a thumbs up.
"Okay class, settle down." Callahan's unamused voice boomed over their side conversations.
The room went quiet after he spoke which made Blaine break his eye contact from Kurt and focus on the front of the room. His fingertips burrowed in to the plastic of his garment bag in anticipation. He just wanted to show off his dress already. Blaine took a lot of pride in his piece and could feel his stomach turn in knots as the anxiety set in.
"Today your prom dress assignments are due and I already know that most will be horrid." Professor Callahan waved his hand. "Let's get this over with. Who would like to go first?"
Warner's hand shot straight into the air and he eagerly waved it back and forth. Callahan rolled his eyes and motioned for Warner to come forward. Vaughn squeezed his hand as he got up. Warner looked back at him as he approached the dress form and unveiled a deep red floor length gown. There was virtually no flaw in the dress. Vaughn gave a soft clap as Warner finished fussing with it.
Callahan walked around the dress, studying it. "Please describe your reason for this design."
Blaine looked at the dress, he had to admit, it was gorgeous. It was an elegant design. Nothing too extravagant. It clung in all of the right places on the dress form and accentuted ever curve. It had straps that crisscrossed over the chest and were lightly bedazzled with crystals. The design of the dress was quite simple but it got the point across.
"I decided to go with a very glamorous look since prom is the highschool version of the Oscars. This is their chance to dress like an adult. I chose a design that would fit closer to the body since these girls have the physique to show off. I chose red since it is a fun, sexy color and I decided to keep the dress simple with slight bedazzling along the crossed straps, for a little sparkle." Warner ran his fingers along one of the straps and then turned to Callahan.
"Very nice Warner. You have a wonderful craftsmanship. I could see this being a popular seller."
Warner's face lit up.
"Is there anyone who wants to challenge him who thinks their design is better?"
Kurt locked eyes with Blaine but Blaine's hand was already in the air.
Warner and Callahan both looked at him shocked.
"Blaine, come on up."
Blaine stood up and carried his garment bag to the front of the room. He opened it and dressed his dress form with his design.
His dress was dramatically different from Warner's. It was a saphire blue color that was a cocktail length. It had a fitted bodice with diagonal rouching from under the bust to the lower waist. The edges of the dress were slightly longer than the front and back which made the slight black tulle show from underneath which also gave the dress a fuller shape. There was one regular strap made of a sheer fabric with an additional stap that reached across the chest to meet at the top of the shoulder.
"Can you describe this for us Blaine?" Callahan rubbed his chin as he stared at Blaine's dress.
"As I agree with Warner about this night being glamorous, I took it in a different direction. Prom is a milestone in your highschool career, it is a night to dress up and have fun. As glamorous as a floor length gown is, I do not feel it is appopriate for our intended audience. These girls are young. They want to dance, flirt with their dates and have fun. They don't want to wear something grown up and constricting. I decided to go with a more fun design which shows off their legs, which in turn will make it easier for them to dance in. I went with a more youthful design because I feel that high school girls should dress their age."
Callahan turned the mannequin towards himself and studied the dress more closely. He studied it long and hard, running his fingers along the rouching. "Well Blaine, I think you would of just sealed your first sale."
Blaine pumped his fist. "Thank you Professor."
Warner grumbled as he underdressed his dress form and Blaine happily pulled the dress off of his. As Blaine walked back to his seat, he quickly caught Kurt's eyes that were cheering internally from the other side of the room. He sat down in his seat and watched as other students soon learned their fate. Kurt and him exchanged glances throughout the class, mostly just to telepathically review the other dresses.
When class was finally dismissed, Callahan stopped Blaine as he walked out the door. "Have you thought about applying for my internship?"
"Yeah actually." He dug into his messenger bag and pulled out his resume.
Callahan grinned as he took it.
Kurt beamed from behind, for only Blaine to see.
-----
Blaine and Santana laughed over their coffee as he retold the story.
"Your dress was hot though. I am glad your teacher noticed."
Blaine took a long sip of coffee. "You should have seen the look on Warner's face."
"I bet it was spectacular."
Blaine nodded. "It felt really good actually."
"Bastard deserved it."
"He sure did."
Santana slowly stirred her coffee, her smile slowly leaving her face.
Blaine elbowed her. "Hey, what's up?"
Santana shrugged. "It's nothing." She avoided his eyes.
Blaine sipped his coffee again.
Santana looked up at him. "We are having an open mic night tonight here at the coffee shop and I really want to sing but I don't want to sing accapela."
"Do you play an instrument?"
She shook her head. "No."
"I play the guitar..."
Santana perked up instantly and her eyes grew wide. "Would you-"
"I'd love to." He interrupted her.
"I'd hug you right now if I did not care about getting hair gel all over myself."
He rolled his eyes in response.
"Thank you."
Blaine smiled behind his coffee cup. "Don't mention it."
-----
"You're next San." Her coworker called back to her.
"Are you nervous?"
Santana finished applying her lipstick and pressed her lips together, acting like she didn't hear the question.
"You're nervous arn't you?"
Santana returned her lipstick to her make-up bag. "This
was a mistake."
Blaine put his hands on her shoulders. "Look at me."
Santana did not look at him and he shook her slightly until she eventually stared him straight in the eye.
"We practiced this song and you are going to be wonderful."
She let out a shaky breath. "You are right."
"You are on Santana." Her coworker said on his return.
Blaine slid his hands from her shoulders and squeezed her hands. "Here we go!"
She gave a half smile and then walked on stage.
-----
Blaine and Santana performed an acoustic version of Valerie. They got a standing ovation. As Blaine looked out into the crowd he noticed Kurt with his arms folded with his eyes brimming with tears. Blaine made his way over to him as soon as they got off stage.
"So, what did you think?" Blaine gave him a huge smile.
"You two were incredible. I-I never knew you could sing like that."
"I have some tricks up my sleeve. I was not lead vocalist of the Warblers for nothing."
Kurt laughed. "This is true. Maybe if you were not singing top 40 songs sung by girls, you would have won."
"Speak for yourself, I overheard your version of Roses' turn the other day." Blaine did in fact overhear him singing the other day. He had left his scarf in the classroom and had gone back to retrieve it and found Kurt cleaning the room while belting the song. Blaine could not help but watch him, in awe of his impressive singing voice.
Kurt blushed. "That's showtunes, it is entirely different."
"Not at all." Blaine gave him a smug smile. "How did you find out about this anyway?"
"I wanted to see you and you texted me that you were getting coffee with Santana so I thought I should check here first."
"You wanted to see me." He said as a statement rather than a question.
Kurt nodded and then pulled him away from the crowd by his elbow. "Callahan has been asked to participate in a huge fashion charity event for some big name person and he is going to need all hands on deck. He has decided that he is going to select four interns from your class to participate in the showcase."
He took a step back. "Are you serious?"
"The list goes up tomorrow."
"Do you know who he is picking?"
He shook his head. "No, but then again. I do not think he has decided himself either."
Blaine nodded in agreement. "What about you, are you participating?"
"I will be producing outfits myself as well as overseeing the rest of you. If this goes well, this will be a huge thing for me because I will get exposure for my designs to all of the big designers. I could not ask for this kind of opportunity so early on in my fasion school career."
"That's amazing Kurt."
"I will wait with you after class tomorrow to see if you got in."
Blaine could not stop smiling. "Yes please, thank you!"
"Don't mention it. I want this for you, you deserve it."
"If it wasn't for all of your help."
"If your prom dress can prove anything, you do pretty well by yourself."
"Thank you." Blaine put one hand on his arm.
Kurt looked down at it and became uneasy. "I have to go."
"Oh okay. Thank you for coming."
"You are welcome."
"I should see you up here next time. Your version of Rose's turn was amazing."
Kurt chuckled. "I'll think about it."
-----
Blaine could not focus at all during class. His leg shook nervously under his desk and would exchange glances with Kurt in the hopes he could relieve him of some of the stress he was currently under.
No such luck.
Time seemed to move incredibly slow and Blaine thought he would lose his mind. Finally, class was over and Callahan moved to the front of the podium.
"In five minutes I will be posting the names of the four interns that will be accompanying me to a big charity fashion show. Seeing your name on this list means that you are the best of the best."
The chatter and buzz of excitement filled Blaine's ears. He had to get out of the room. He needed to get some air. Blaine scooped up his belongings and hurried out the door. Kurt noticed and hurried after him.
Blaine walked out but didn't stop in the courtyard, he began walking in the direction of his dorm. He was trying to put as much distance as he could between himself and Callahan's list.
"Blaine.....BLAINE!"
Blaine stopped.
"Where are you going?"
"I can't look at the list. What if my name isn't there?"
Kurt walked around to face Blaine. "You have worked really hard and you have just as much of a chance as anyone else to get it."
"But I don't think I could handle the rejection right now."
Kurt grabbed his arm and pulled him back towards the classroom. "Suck it up Anderson. We will look together"
As they approached the classroom a crowd had formed. Some people were crying and a few people were cheering. Two of those people were Warner and Vaughn who were hugging each other. Blaine stopped when he saw them and Kurt continued on to look at the list.
"We did it Warner! We got the internship. It is just like we planned!"
"I know it is incredible, but I know one thing that could make this moment even better."
"What could possibly be better then both of us getting internships with Callahan our freshman year?"
Warner dropped to his knee and pulled a small box from his coat pocket, "Make this the happiest day of my life."
Vaughn gasped and put a hand to cover his mouth.
Blaine felt his heart fall into his stomach.
"Marry me Vaughn."
Vaughn looked Blaine in the eye and smirked. "Yes. Yes I will marry you." He leaned down and kissed Warner.
Blaine watched as their classmates congratulated them and Vaughn showed off his ring. His body was incapable of moving but Blaine really was not trying. He tried to hold in all of the emotions that he was feeling but the more he watched them celebrate, the harder it became. Blaine screamed internally. I really thought that if I kept up with it, you would fall back in love with me. You would see that I was serious all along and you could respect me as a fashion designer. I changed my whole life around to be here for you and you just ended up breaking my heart again.
"Blaine."
Blaine watched the newly engaged couple kiss once more.
"Blaine..."
Kurt had missed the whole commotion and looked at Blaine and then looked to what was causing him to be so distracted. He rolled his eyes.
"BLAINE!"
Blaine slowly looked toward him, clearly on the verge of tears.
Kurt pointed to the list that Callahan had posted. "You should take a look at this."
Blaine dragged his feet towards the wall. Kurt pulled him along and motioned for the list once more.
He raised his eyes to the list.
The paper only had a few words typed on it. Blaine scanned down its length until it listed the names of the four student interns. Warner, Enid, Vaughn, Blaine. Oh well...
Wait.
Blaine.
Blaine read it again. There, written in clear print it stated his name, "Blaine Anderson."
"Woah, is that my name?"
Kurt nodded excitedly.
"This can't be real. Pinch me Kurt, am I dreaming?"
Kurt pinched him and Blaine winced but then looked back at the list.
"My name is still there."
"It's real Blaine, you got the internship."
"I finally did something right! Kurt, don't you see. I did it... I really did it."
Kurt smiled at him. "How do you feel?"
"Better." Blaine caught sight of Warner. "So much better."
Blaine pulled him into a hug. "Thank you, for everything."
Kurt looked at him. "Don't mention it, really."
Blaine released Kurt and then spun on his heels. He looked directly at the happy couple.
"WARNER!"
Warner stopped kissing Vaughn and looked toward Blaine.
"Sorry if you found my actions annoying at the beginning of the school year but I would like to put that all behind us. I do look forward to working with the two of you."
"Wait, what?"
"The internship Warner, yeah I got it too."
Vaughn's jaw dropped.
"You thought I could not do it and I am starting to question your judgement Warner. Look at me know!"
Warner went to look at the list himself.
"Seeing my name on that list, makes me feel so much better. Better than how I felt when I was with you." Blaine tapped Vaughn on the shoulder. "You can have him, he is quite the keeper!"
Warner pulled Vaughn away from Blaine and the two of them left the courtyard.
"Oh yes this feels so much better." He ripped the list down and clutched it to his chest.
Kurt leaned against the wall watching Blaine.
"Can you believe this?" Blaine looked at it again. "You know what..." He looked in the direction that Warner had just left in. "I have moved on to better things and I don't need him. I can do this all by myself. I think I love seeing my name on this list more than I ever loved him."
Kurt laughed.
"I am serious. Kurt, I am going to fight so hard for this! This is what I want. I am going to start first thing in the morning."
"Oh? Why not now?"
Blaine walked up to him and grabbed his wrist. "Because I am taking you out to dinner to thank you and to celebrate this amazing opportunity."
