Kurt leaves his audition feeling confident. Sure, the other people clearly had way more experience than he did, but he feels good about how he did. He knows he can sing, and he knows he did his best. Now all he has to do is wait to see if he gets a call.
He pulls his phone from his pocket to check the time. The screen is still pulled up on Blaine’s contact information, and Kurt wonders if it’s too soon to text him; he doesn’t want to seem desperate or anything. He decides to give it a try. Blaine had given him his number, for a reason, after all.
He’s lost track of how many times he’s deleted and re-written his text before actually sending it.
(2:25) I hope this is actually the right number.
He slides his phone back into his pocket, trying to tell himself not to get too excited. Blaine could just ignore the text. Or maybe his attempt at a joke was more accurate than he'd anticipated. Maybe Blaine gave him a fake number. But why would he even give him a number in the first place if it wasn’t real. It’s not like Kurt asked for his number. But maybe he was trying to get Kurt back for staring at him.
All of Kurt’s frantic, horrible thoughts are interrupted when his phone starts buzzing, just as he walks into his apartment building. He reaches into his pocket, praying to every deity he knows of that it isn’t Rachel texting him asking how his audition went.
(2:28) Well, that depends. Whose number were you hoping for it to be? ;)
Kurt re-reads the text a few times, contemplating a response. The winky face suggests that it is the right number, and Blaine has been expecting the text. So that’s a good sign, Kurt figures. Just as he approaches the elevator, still trying to think of the perfect response, the doors open, and Rachel walks out, though he doesn’t notice her right away, eyes still trained on his phone.
“Kurt! How was the audition?” Kurt jerks his head up from the small screen in his hand.
“Oh, hey Rach. It went pretty well. But I could tell everyone else there has been to a lot more auditions than I have,” he replies, though still smiling with the thought of his new texting buddy.
“Well, you look happy about it, so I guess it did go pretty well!”
“Uh, yeah, it was awesome,” he tells her, still not taking his eyes off of his phone for more than a few seconds at a time, re-reading Blaine’s text over and over. He didn’t even say anything exciting, or directly to Kurt, really. In fact, Kurt doesn’t even really know that it’s definitely Blaine. But for whatever reason, he can’t help but be excited about it. “Listen, Rachel, why don’t we talk later, when you get home. I have to go.” Kurt says as he goes to press the elevator button.
“Oh, okay. I was just going to work. See you later, then. Oh, by the way, don’t forget about–” her voice is cut off as the elevator doors close. She’ll text him if it’s that important. Though he hopes she doesn’t. He only wants to get texts from one person right now.
Walking into the apartment that he shares with Rachel, he sends another text to Blaine.
(2:33) I asked you first.
Within less than a minute, he gets another text.
(2:33) Technically, you didn’t ask me anything. You made a statement.
Kurt smiles and rolls his eyes, setting down his bag by the door, and letting himself fall onto the couch.
(2:35) Touché. How did your audition go? I didn’t get to talk to you before you left. :(
(2:37) Hold on, you don’t even know for sure that I am who you *think* I am.
Kurt snorts, grabbing the remote and turning on the T.V. and walking into the kitchen to make himself a sandwich for lunch.
(2:40) Fine, I’ll play along…
(2:40) Hi, is this Blaine?
Kurt, still smiling, sets his phone down on the counter and starts to get out the sandwich supplies. He sets the bread, peanut butter, and jam on the counter and picks up his buzzing phone again.
(2:42) It is. And who is this that I’m texting?
Kurt smiles impossibly wider, rolling his eyes again, and quickly types out another text to Blaine, feeling braver.
(2:44) How many people have you given your number to recently?
(2:44) Tons. I’m an extremely popular person. ;)
(2:46) I could tell by the way those people were crowded around you in that waiting room.
(2:47) Hmm, I’m going to take a wild guess and say that this is Kurt?
(2:48) Good guess. ;)
Kurt sets his phone back down and starts making his sandwich, his smile never faltering because he can’t stop thinking about Blaine. Not that he would want to, if he could.
(2:53) Well, Kurt, if you’re not busy, how about discussing auditions over coffee?
Kurt does a little jump in the middle of his kitchen, embarrassed when he almost slips and falls, before remembering that he’s the only one in the apartment. He composes himself and sends Blaine another text, not yet accepting the offer, because he doesn’t want to seem like he’s too desperate.
(2:55) That’s very forward of you.
The answering text comes back quickly.
(2:56) Hey, I’m just asking you to discuss auditions. It’s strictly business.
Kurt smiles and rolls his eyes at Blaine for what seems like the fiftieth time.
(2:58) Of course.
(2:58) Just so you know, I wouldn’t have declined, necessarily, even if it weren’t “strictly business.” ;)
(2:59) Any preferred coffee shop?
Kurt pulls a plate out of the cupboard, and walks back into the living room to watch T.V. while he eats his lunch, setting his phone down on his leg for quick access to keep texting Blaine.
(3:02) Good to know. :)
(3:03) Um, how about Espresso Yourself?
(3:05) Ahh, good choice. That happens to be my favourite coffee shop in the city.
(3:06) Awesome :) How soon can you be there?
Kurt looks at his reflection in the mirror across the room. He decides his hair won’t take much more than a bit of hairspray to make sure it stays, but he had made sure to make it so it would hold up for his audition, and it was still good from that. Plus he wants to be able to see Blaine again as soon as possible. But he will need some time to pick out the perfect outfit.
(3:09) Twenty minutes?
(3:11) Sounds good. See you there! :)
Kurt turns off the T.V. and runs to put his sandwich in the fridge, and then to go pick what to wear to impress Blaine.
