Ding! Ding! Ding!
Kurt groaned in his sleep and smacked the alarm clock on his bedside table, cracking open an eye to check the time. 7:30. His audition's at 10. Kurt sat up groggily in his bed, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. No words could possibly put a description to how nervous Kurt felt. His first big audition since moving to New York. He had to admit, it's been tiring enough keeping up his job at Vogue, but he needed something more.
When Kurt was a sophomore, New York was the dream. It continued to be his dream through high school and on. He wouldn't change being in New York for anything in the world. Once he got to New York it felt as if the world was at his fingertips. He could do anything. Though he didn't get into NYADA like was planned, he decided to apply to a few internships at various fashion institutes. Vogue picked him and after a head to head battle with a few other interns, he was sitting in his very own cubicle at Vogue.com giving his fashion ideas to the best of the best, Ms. Isabelle Wright. Working at Vogue was a dream come true but even that didn't fulfill his New York dream. So Kurt decided to get another job at the Spotlight Diner where Rachel and Santana had been waitresses for a while.
Now as a waiter and a fashion prodigy, he was feeling exceptionally smug. It went on like that for a good three months before Kurt got bored. He needed more. But what? He always loved acting but came to terms with the fact that his appearance and voice might not land him a lot of roles. He gave a break on the whole acting thing and decided to focus on other things, but even Rachel was beginning to see a difference in Kurt's posture and hold. He started eating unhealthily, waking up late, and sitting on the couch in his spare time. It wasn't the same Kurt she knew and loved. It wasn't long before he was confronted.
“Kurt, I'm worried,” Rachel put her hands on her hips and stood over Kurt. He had been staring at the tv screen for the past two hours but not actually paying attention to what was showing. His hand was still grasping the spoon from where it was resting in an empty ice cream carton, too lazy to remove it. He looked up slowly at his roommate.
“May I help you Rachel?” Kurt asked unamused, finally sitting up from where he was slouching against the couch.
“Yes, you may,” Rachel paused. “I've seen you wake up every morning on your days off and drag your way in here just to plop yourself down on the couch and watch God knows what. You've eaten at least ten cartons of ice cream in the past 2 weeks, and I honestly don't think you've done any laundry in that time. Is there anything you have to say for yourself?”
Rachel definitely got Kurt's attention because he released his hold on the spoon and began tugging at his clothes, trying to look a least a little presentable. But his pride soon stepped in.
“It's none of your business, Rachel. I do what I do and you do what you do. I don't think our actions deserve questioning,” Kurt replied, standing up to throw the carton away. Rachel followed.
“Kurt, I care about you. You need to get out there. I think you need to audition for something. Maybe go off-broadway,” Rachel suggested.
Kurt rolled his eyes.
“It's easy for you to say. You landed Fanny as soon as you stepped foot in this place,” Kurt opened the refrigerator and grabbed a bottle of water downing it in a few gulps.
“That doesn't matter right now. What matters is that you're a force to be reckoned with. You should start believing that,” Rachel gave a small smile before turning on her heel and into her room. Kurt rolled his eyes once more.
Even though Kurt believed Rachel was crazy and didn't know what she was talking about, he thought a lot about what she said weeks after she said it. He couldn't get it out of his head. Maybe she was right. So after weeks of deliberating about what he could possibly audition for, he sat Rachel and Santana down to tell them about the news.
Kurt asked them both to let him cook them dinner one night after work. Both eagerly accepted but not without Santana throwing out a lewd comment about Kurt finally wanting to get in her pants. When Kurt plated the last of the food (marinara lasagna with steamed vegetables), and they were all sitting at the table Kurt finally spoke up.
“I've decided to audition for an off-broadway show.”
Silence hung in the air for what seemed like forever until Rachel erupted in squeals while Santana sat back with a grin on her face, arms crossed over her chest. Rachel jumped out of her chair and pulled Kurt up, hugging him until his lungs were near collapsed.
“What?! How did this happen? What are you auditioning for? This is so exciting! Ohmygosh. What will you wear?! You have to let me pick out some-”
“Rachel! Calm down, honey or you're gonna faint,” Kurt said, pulling away from Rachel's tight embrace and sitting down once more. Rachel sat down but couldn't stop bouncing.
“I'm sorry, but this all so exciting!” Rachel explained, grabbing her water and taking a sip.
Kurt noticed Santana hadn't said anything and turned to her, giving her a look. Santana grinned wider.
“I'm proud of you, Porcelain. You finally got that stick out of your ass and did something.”
Kurt rolled his eyes playfully.
“It's more than you've done since you moved here,” Kurt said snarkily, forking a carrot and putting it in his mouth.
“True, but my time will come. Trust me. I have this city in my hands,” Santana said, smirk still playing on her lips.
Conversation flowed lightly after that, Rachel still prodding Kurt about what he was going to wear. Kurt hadn't thought that far ahead. All he knew was that he was auditioning for a show called My Heart's a Haven directed by nationally known, Blaine Anderson.
