"It's just you and me now, kid."
Kurt remembered that night after his mom's funeral. His dad had tucked him in the same way he'd done every night since she died.
Just you and me.
Words meant to comfort and for a long time that's what they did. Kurt felt safe, secure. He felt like his dad wasn't going anywhere and that no matter what he would always be there, be a part of his life.
"We're a family now, kid."
The night before the wedding Burt had sat down with his son and they'd shared a tentative father-son drink. Kurt had had two mouthfuls of beer (just to confirm that he really didn't like the taste) while they had an awkward conversation about how things were going to change but also how they weren't. Burt wanted to reassure his son that even though Carole and Finn were moving in and were important to him, Kurt wouldn't come second to anyone.
And this was better. Carole wasn't his mom but she didn't try to be and she cared about him. Finn... well, Finn had potential to be a good brother. If he actually worked out what it meant to be a brother.
"So this is what being an us feels like. Think I'm going to like it."
Their first proper date was drawing to a close and Blaine, ever the gentleman, had walked Kurt up to the door before taking his hand. That one word, us, sent a shiver down Kurt's spine. Or maybe it was the fact it was whispered in his ear right before Blaine had kissed him on his neck. But in any case it was an amazing feeling.
He was part of an us. There was someone out there who cared about him, someone he cared about in return. (OK, someone he loved. But it was far too soon for that kind of admission.)
A father, a step-mother, a brother and now a serious boyfriend. Kurt Hummel's family was pretty damn awesome and he was learning what it felt like to be loved.
