"Kurt, Kurt!" Blaine threw his backpack on the hospital floor and skidded over to Kurt's bed. "Are you okay? Please be okay."
"Blaine, buddy, Kurt's in a hospital induced coma. It means he's sleeping while the pain goes away," Burt added the last part for Blaine's confused look.
"Is he gonna be okay?"
"Yes, he's gonna be just fine," Burt smiled.
Blaine took the boy's arm that wasn't covered in a cast. He whispered secrets to Kurt and told him he loved him.
-
"I wish you could hear me, Kurt," a tear rolled down his cheek one day, a week since Blaine's first visit. Burt was in the cafeteria of the hospital with Emily. He squeezed Kurt's hand and felt the slightest squeeze back. He wasn't imagining it that time, he knew it was there. "Kurt, I'm here baby, I'm here! Doctor? Doctor!" Blaine pressed the emergency button on Kurt's bed.
The doctor came rushing in and turned off the siren. He checked Kurt and they told Blaine he was waking up from his coma and that he would be in a lot of pain. The doctor ran to get Burt and Emily.
"Blaine?" Kurt's eyelids fluttered.
"I'm here, baby."
"Blaine, I'm gay." Blaine just nodded and leaned over, pressing their lips together in a kiss that was both unsure and compassionate. Since they weren't sure what to do, they just held their lips together. Both boys were giggling when Blaine pulled away after a few seconds.
"Does this mean..." Kurt began to ask, but Burt and Emily returned before he could finished.
"Kurt!" Burt laughed a little and ran to his son's side. Blaine waved and walked out of the room with Emily.
-
A few days later, Kurt was normal, just a little sore. Blaine had come over for the first time in the few days.
"Blaine, can we talk?"
"Uh... sure." Blaine was shaky as he sat, facing the opposite way of Kurt. He had known this would happen, but he didn't expect it so soon.
"I saw what your dad did to you."
"Kurt-"
"Don't, Blaine. It's not okay, what he's doing to you."
"Kurt, please don't tell anyone!" Blaine whipped around and begged.
Kurt smiled. "I won't, I promise. I just am scared for you."
"Don't be scared," Blaine hugged Kurt. "It was really brave of you to tell me that the other day," Blaine climbed to the other side of the bed and put his arm around Kurt. "Thank you for telling me that."
"We need to talk about that, too. Are you mad?"
"Of course not," Blaine squeezed Kurt.
"Oh... Are you gay, Blaine? You... you kissed me."
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done that if it upset you."
"It didn't... I liked it. I just... don't know what's going on."
"Me neither. I'm not really sure right now, Kurt. I'll let you know when I am, though, okay?"
"Okay." Kurt wrapped his hands around Blaine's neck. "I love you, Blaine."
"I love you, too, Kurt."
"Wanna go to Breadstix with me?"
"I don't want you to use your gift card on me."
"And I don't want to go twice by myself. And my Dad eats too much for my gift card. He said to take you," he laughed and twisted the gift card in his hands.
"Okay!"
That night, the boys held hands as they walked into Breadstix. No matter how many people laughed at them, they kept their hands together the whole time.
-
"Hey, Coop, can I talk to you?" A twelve year old Blaine was leaning in the doorway of his bedroom as his brother packed for college.
"Yeah, sure bud, what's going on?" Coop sat on his bed and pointed to the other. Blaine looked outside to make sure his parents were gone and shut the bedroom door. "This must be private."
"Yeah, uh, it is. Coop, we go to church. We're told things that maybe we don't believe but we're forced to. You're getting out of here; you can believe what you want. I've got five more years here. I'm not even sure of my religion anymore. Kurt tells me that God loves everyone, but I don't know what to think right now." Blaine was rambling, so Cooper cut in.
"What are you talking about, Blaine?"
"Coop, I'm gay." Blaine said quietly and looked at the floor.
"I know." Cooper patted his brother's knee.
"What?" Blaine turned to look at his brother.
"Yeah, I've known since you were a little kid. You and Kurt went to Breadstix when you were 10 on the same night that me and, oh what was her name, oh yeah, Katie went there. You two were holding hands at the table. Even though you two are best friends, I could see the look of love in your eye. Is he gay too?"
"Yeah, he is."
"I knew it. Blaine," Cooper forced Blaine to look him in the eye, "I still love you. I don't care what you are. You're an amazing person." He messed up his brother's bow tie.
Blaine chuckled. "Thanks, Coop."
"Anything else, bud?"
"Yeah, actually. Kurt and I... kissed."
"When?"
"When we were ten. Remember that night that he went into the hospital? He woke up a week later from an induced coma and the first thing out of his mouth, besides my name, was the phrase ‘I'm gay.' I kissed him as a response, but we never really established if I was gay or not."
"Dude, I think he knows."
"We were ten. We were experimenting."
"Dude, he knows."
"How do you know?"
"Are you kidding? I see the way you two stare at each other. You're gonna be getting it on by the time you're fourteen."
"Coop!"
"Sorry, sorry. But, as your older brother, I think I should give you ‘the talk.'"
"Ew, no."
"Yes, because Mom and Dad are going to give you one that you don't need to hear. You're going to hear about how girls and guys have sex. I actually prepared for this," Coop winked and pointed at his head as he opened his desk drawer and pulled out some pamphlets. He tossed them on the bed. "Sit."
"No, I don't want to."
"I don't care. Sit."
"Ugh, I hate you."
"I love you too. You'll thank me one day."
Blaine gingerly picked up a pamphlet. It read ‘Boy on Boy.' He chuckled. "Seriously, bro?"
"Oh, shut up. These were the only free ones. I read the lesbian ones too, for fun. Hey, did you know that they can use a banana for the strangest-"
"Stop! Too much information. Let's focus on these ones." Blaine shook a pamphlet in Cooper's face, who just laughed.
"Fine, fine," he chuckled. "Okay, so, here's the deal. You're gonna learn all of the real juicy stuff in here. There is even a diagram! Great, right?" When Blaine gave him a look, he continued. "But what we need to talk about isn't that kind of stuff. It's about emotions. So, I'm kind of a player, I know. But I don't want you to turn out like that. I want you to save this," he shook the pamphlet, "for someone special. If that's Kurt, then that's what it is. If it's not, that's fine too. Just, know that what you're doing isn't just fun. It's a big thing. It's going to hurt, too. But, it'll get better, I promise."
"How would you know this?"
"Gay friends I met at the college tour," he chuckled.
"I thought this was a Christian college..."
"They don't hold up to their standards," Cooper laughed and winked.
"Oh."
"Blaine, here," Cooper pulled a brown paper bag from under the bed. It contained a bottle of lube and condoms.
"Woah, dude, I'm twelve!"
"I know, but I'm not going to be around, okay? Just... wait until you're ready to use this." He stuck it on their nightstand. "Listen, Mom and Dad aren't going to be cool with this. You know that. But I want you to understand something, okay? Don't try to change for them. Don't let anyone change who you are because this can't change. And if you want to be a Christian, you are not a hypocrite." He pointed at Blaine's heart while he said all of this.
"Thank you, Coop."
"No problem, bro." He patted his brother's shoulder and carried his last suitcase to the car. Blaine smiled down at the bag and threw it in the drawer before running outside to hug his brother goodbye.
"Bye," Cooper winked.
"Bye," Blaine whispered a quiet thank you in his brother's ear as they hugged.
When Cooper left, Blaine felt a rush of freedom.
He was out to someone.
And it felt really damn good.
