"PaPa?! No, oh my god, this isn't happening. Where's Dad? Charlie, is that you?!" Elizabeth sat on the floor, clutching one of her fathers to her chest. She brushed his gray hair with her hand, just to feel some sort of comfort. The door had just slammed shut, Charlie was still holding the phone.
"Lizzie, what's going on?" Before Charlie could say anything else, she saw her father lying on the ground, his skin a pale gray, his eyes clenched shut. "Have you called 911?!" She slid down and sat next to her sister, wrapping a comforting arm around her.
"Yes, I called 911, Charlie. I'm not stupid!" Elizabeth began to sob even harder, falling into her younger sister's arms. "Sorry. I shouldn't have been so hostile," she said, sitting up a bit as her sobs reduced to sniffles.
"It's okay. When are they coming?" Charlie asked, rubbing continuous circles into the small of her sister's back.
"I don't know. I hear sirens now, I think..." Lizzie didn't let her eyes drift away from her father's closed ones. She held his hand tighter than ever.
"Where's Dad?" Charlie asked as the sirens stopped outside the apartment building. She stood up, opening the door for the medics that would no doubt be coming in soon.
"He's on his way as fast as he can be. He was at a doctor's appointment, you know... the important appointment..." She let her voice trail off. She couldn't face the fact that her father was slowly losing the ability to walk again. The doctors had to be wrong. Her Dad would come home from this appointment walking and talking about the mistake that the doctors had made. He'd hold her PaPa's hand while they woke him up from whatever unconscious sleep he was under. That was how it would be and she just knew it. It had to be that way. How could life function if it wasn't?
"Hey, guys, the medics are coming up now- Oh... God... Kurt... Oh my god..." Blaine wheeled his way over to Kurt and immediately took his other hand. His words changed into sobs quickly and he tried to pull his unconscious husband into his lap.
Elizabeth was shocked at her father being in a wheelchair, so was Charlie. But they both knew they couldn't let him do that.
"Dad, the medics are coming up, you can't-"
"Please, Dad, leave him still, okay?"
"Dad, no, don't! If you're in a wheelchair the doctor doesn't want you out of it."
"Dad, stay! Stop!"
Blaine held Kurt to his chest, sitting on the floor. He held one of Kurt's hands to his chest, but running the other hand through his remaining curls. The man before him would always be beautiful to him, even in this state. "I love this man. He's my whole entire life. We were born together and I can't let anything happen to him."
The descendants of this amazing couple just shared a concerned look. What would their Dad do if Kurt didn't survive? They didn't want to think about it, but they knew it wouldn't end well.
Blaine sighed as the medics came in. He knew what was coming.
"Sir, you have to move. The patient needs care. Hey, aren't you supposed to be in that chair?" One of the medics took Kurt and placed him on a stretcher. He helped Blaine into his chair and began to wheel him downstairs.
"No, I got it. Take care of him. I love him. Please, save his life if you can. Please..." He rain his fingers through his curls again and began to cry quietly. When Charlie tried to push the chair, Blaine grabbed the wheels. "I've got it, I said. I don't need help. I never have and I sure as hell don't need it now."
-
"Kurt? Kurt! You're awake!" Blaine dropped his magazine and stood up, despite what he'd been told. He was only supposed to be up for an hour a day and he had already extended that by pacing insanely.
Kurt's eyelashes fluttered. "Blaine?" He reached out his hand and caressed Blaine's jaw. "I love you, baby."
Blaine smiled. They hadn't used that name in a long time. "I love you, too. Are you going to... Is it time? Please, Kurt... I can't live without you."
"Yes, you can. We've done everything together. It's time for us to... to do something on our own now. Okay?" Kurt took Blaine's hand in his free one. "I promise I'll watch over you guys, wherever it is I go. My dad, my mom, and me. I promise you that with everything I have. I love you so much."
Blaine's eyes filled with tears. "No... I don't know what life is like without you. I... I won't be able to live. I'll just... I can come with you. It'll be like Romeo and Juliet. We can-"
"No, Blaine," Kurt said calmly. "Our kids need you. They can't lose both of their fathers at once, love. It's going to be okay... I promise. I love you."
"I love you, too, Kurt," Blaine kissed him once and started to cry harder.
"Hey, don't cry," Kurt squeezed his hand with every ounce of strength he had. "Listen to the doctors. Live a full life. And... when you're ready... when it's time... I'll be waiting for you. But don't come until you have to. The kids need you. Be strong, Blaine. I... I love you."
"I can't do this. I can't let you go, Kurt. Not if I can't go with you," Blaine didn't break eye contact. Those blue eyes would fade soon, and he could tell. They were already becoming gray with weakness. Even though Kurt was crying, his eyes weren't their usual vibrant blue like when he cried on previous occasions.
"You have to let me... I can't stay here. But, hey, it's just like Frosty," Blaine chuckled a bit and Kurt let out a soft laugh. He let his smile fade. "It's not goodbye."
"I'm never saying goodbye to you," Blaine pressed his forehead to Kurt's and gave him one more kiss. He stroked his hair one last time and caressed his cheek. He couldn't resist. He kissed him once more and the pressure of Kurt's lips on his were enough to make his legs shaky. He nearly fell over, but he steadied himself on the bed. He could see Kurt struggling to stay now, his eyes staying closed longer and longer each time he blinked. His breaths were much shakier, as if it was hurting Kurt to stay alive. "You can let go now, Kurt... It's okay. I love you. Don't forget me up there."
"I'll always love you. Don't forget me down here," Kurt let out one last light laugh. Blaine could tell it was the last one he'd ever hear. He giggled himself because, even in the face of death, Kurt could still use that sarcastic tone. "See you soon," Kurt smiled as much as he could and took one last deep breath. His last breath escaped him as he squeezed Blaine's hand and his eyes shut.
The pressure on Blaine's hand became limp. He didn't need to check Kurt's pulse. He knew. He squeezed his husband's hand once more. "See you soon."
He turned around. Charlie and Elizabeth were standing the corner, holding each other. He walked over to them and enveloped them in a hug. "We're gonna be okay," he whispered, letting his own tears taking him over. "We're gonna be okay."
