"I'm home!" Kurt called as he walked through the door later that day. The house was completely silent for a moment then he heard Lucy's soft voice coming from upstairs. He followed the sound to Macy and Mary's rooms. She was rocking Matthew as the half asleep girls laid in their cribs.
Hush, little baby, don't say a word.
Lucy's gonna buy you a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird won't sing,
Lucy's gonna buy you a diamond ring
She looked up and smiled when she saw Kurt as she sang.
And if that diamond ring turns brass,
Lucy's gonna buy you a looking glass
Kurt hovered over the girls' cribs.
And if that looking glass gets broke,
Papa's gonna buy you a billy goat
He joined in.
And if that billy goat won't pull,
Lucy's gonna buy you a cart and bull
And if that cart and bull turn over,
Papa's gonna buy you a dog named Rover
And if that dog named Rover won't bark
Lucy's gonna buy you a horse and cart
And if that horse and cart fall down,
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town
They sang the last stanza together as the triplets finally fell asleep. Kurt approached Lucy holding out his hands, "I can take it from here, Luce." He told her. Lucy stood up and handed him over a sleeping Matthew. Kurt cradled him in his arms, "Where's everyone else?"
"Cory was just put down for his nap, I let Brittany and Santana go home just a few minutes ago and they took Jessie and Damion. They'll bring them back around dinner."
"As long as everyone is safe." Kurt said.
"Of course they are. You can trust me to make sure everyone is taken care of."
Kurt smiled warmly at Lucy then looked down at Matthew still resting his arms, "Let's get you to bed." He told his youngest son then left Lucy alone with the girls. He came back into the room a moment later to find Lucy rubbing soothing circles on Mary's stomach. Kurt approached her and wrapped an arm around her back.
"You know, Santana and Brittany asked a good question earlier." Lucy began, her eyes still glued to Mary.
"Oh?"
"How did Mary and Matthew inherit red hair?" Lucy asked.
Kurt smiled softly, "Blaine asked me that sane question the other day."
"And?"
"I'll give you the same answer I gave him. Have you ever seen my mom?"
"No. Didn't she die when you were just a little kid?"
"Yes. That she did. Blaine's only seen pictures of her while she was getting treated. He's never seen her with hair."
"Cancer?" Lucy wondered.
"Yeah." Kurt bit his lower lip and left her for a second. Upon his return he held the same picture he was looking at when Jesabelle came home the day they were packing the pictures, "This is the only picture of my healthy mom I have left." He handed the picture over to Lucy. It was of a fair-skinned red head with long curly hair. Her name was signed at the bottom in black pen "Elizabeth Jamie Phillips Hummel"
"I never showed anybody that picture because - It's sacared to me." Kurt admitted after a long silence, scaring Lucy.
"She's so beautiful." Lucy whispered. Kurt nodded, "I see where you get your looks from."
"My looks. My skin. My personality."
"Well, you do have Burt's humor so not all your personality." Lucy pointed out.
"She was a bit sarcastic though." Kurt said. Lucy looked up at him, "Come on, let's go. Let the kids have some privacy." Kurt said turning Lucy around. He lead them out of the room and closed the door, "Thank you for coming." Kurt hugged Lucy, "But I really think I can handle it from here."
"If you insist..." Lucy trailed as the parted.
"I'm fine, really. I'm stuck with them, alone, every day except Sunday's for a few hours." Lucy sighed, "Luce, trust me."
"Did you have a good time?" Blaine asked hugging his kids at the door.
"Excellent." Santana answered. Blaine looked at her.
"We did, daddy." Damion assured.
"Great. Father's got dinner ready in the dining room. Why don't you go join him?" Blaine said. His two oldest left for the dining room.
"Thanks for coming over, Santana. I don't know why Kurt's so afraid of his weight. With the shape he was in before the pregnancy he wouldn't pack on too much weight. I understand a couple. That happens when it comes to kids but nothing major. He's so insecure and truthly it's not gonna bother me. A couple pounds won't put a dent in his body figure and he'll look just as fine as he did before it all."
"That was... Why are you telling me this?"
"Well that's why he didn't stay home today. He's afraid of getting fat. And I know that will lead to him thinking that I know longer love him and... I just let him go to the gym. Just so-"
"Blaine! Your supper's getting cold!" Kurt called.
"Thank you." Blaine said again.
"Jessie!" Blaine called up the stairs. Jesabelle ran down them as she slung her duffle bag around her neck.
"Is she here?" Jesabelle asked. Blaine stepped aside to show Katy waiting expectantly, "Hi!" She exclaimed as she went to hug her best friend.
"I'm so excited! It's so nice to finally get together!" Katy exclaimed.
Blaine chuckled, "Don't I get a hug goodbye?" He asked.
Jesabelle went to hug her dad, "Where's father?" She asked.
"Still in bed sleeping. The triplets didn't get much sleep and I asked if I could take a turn but he refused since he 'just closed his eyes anyways.'"
"Oh? Then could you give him a hug, peck on a cheek and an 'I love you' when he wakes up for me?" Jesabelle asked.
"Sure thing." Blaine kissed the top of her head, "Now go have a fun week."
It was the first week of summer vacation and Blaine and Kurt let Jesabelle spend the week at Katy's after school's out. It was just what she needed after she was told "no" a bunch of other times and Katy was just as eager for the week as she was.
