"Hey new kid." I smiled as I approached my locker. His was right next to mine. He looked at me quizzicaly then turned back to his locker, "Oh, so youre not going to talk to me? I thought we got off on the right foot?" I asked sarcastically. He remained silent, "Okay, youre going to have to talk to me someday. My locker is right next to yours and I plan on conversating with you every day." I turned my lock to the right digits 32-02-21 and opened my locker. I noticed from the corner of my eye him watching me the entire time, "What?" I asked, a little giggle to my voice. He closed his eyes and shook his head, "Dont be shy. I wanna welcome you."
"Im not shy." He protested.
"You sure act like it."
"But Im not." I looked at him. I was unsure what expression I had on my face I just stared at him, unable to speak, "I have to go. Ill see you first period. You have fun in Glee." He then quickly turned and left. I closed my locker and watched him walk. How did he now about Glee?
"Alright, everyone. Its time to prepare for Regionals!" Mr. Shue announced as he walked into the choir room that morning. Cheers escalated in the room. All except for Rachel who raised her hand, "Rachel."
"Wheres Lauren?" She asked.
"About that. Miss Zizes quit. She said something about her and Puck breaking it off and that Glee Club sucks so she will no longer be joining us." Everyones excitement dwindled to sorrow, "Hey, hey, hey guys. Guys. We still have a few weeks. I think we can recruit another member by Regionals."
"Were doomed." Mercedes said from the back. I turned to look at her. I was disappointed. I stood and approached Mr. Shue.
"Can I?" I asked. Mr. Shue nodded and took a seat in an empty chair, "Were not doomed. Im gonna recruit someone." I said proudly.
"Oh my God, how are you, Gaylord, gonna recruit someone. You almost sound as bad as Hobbit." Santana said, crossing her arms. Rachel turned to look at Santana. Mouth agape.
"Im excellent at getting people to join the club to stand in the back and sing background for my enchanting solos." Rachel protested.
Santana scoffed, "When was the last time you recruited someone?" Rachel sat back in her chair and scanned her mind, "Exactly. So, Burt Reynolds, how do you plan on picking up a random student and getting them to join this dead show choir group?"
"Because I think I know someone who might be willing to join." I smiled.
"Youve got to be kidding me?" Santana said.
"No. I think if I persuade them hard enough this personll be willing to join."
"Come on, lets give all our support to Blaine. Itll be - tricky." I swallowed hard at Mr. Shues words. I knew it wasnt going to be easy but I didnt want to believe the hard part.
I found him sitting alone when I walked into History. I smiled and approached him, "May I?" I asked.
"Okay." He said. I sat and studied him.
"How did you know that I was in Glee?" I asked after a silence.
"I heard you and your friends conversing about it yesterday at lunch. I only assumed..."
"Would you like to join?" I asked. He looked around the room.
"Oh, Im not-"
"We need one more member to attend Regionals. I decided since youre new and NYADA and..." I trailed off.
"I-" He paused and looked down at his book, "Ill think about it."
"Thats better than a no."
"But its not a yes."
"Why?"
"Ive might of heard... things about Glee Club."
"Oh, God, youre into trying to be popular."
"No, I just dont think a slushie shower would seem fun."
"Oh?"
"Blaine, its a great offer. I love to sing and-" He sighed, "Ill think about it." He repeated.
"Okay." I mouthed in reply.
"How was recruiting?" Santana asked me the next day when I walked into the choir room.
"Well..." I trailed off tentative.
"Yeah, I knew you couldnt get anyone."
"Dont be such a bitch." Tina defended, "So Blaine didnt get anyone. At least he tried."
"I never said that." I retorted.
"So you did get someone?" Mercedes questioned.
"Umm..."
"Yes he did." I heard a recognizable voice say from behind me. I turned to see Kurt standing in the doorway.
I smiled at him, "You came!"
"Of course I did. I thought about it and if NYADA plans on excepting me I need things on my plate and to show that I can do what I want to do."
"New kid?" Rachel asked, "Can he even sing?"
"Didnt you hear him say NYADA?" I defended.
"Some people are optimistic when it comes to things like their voice."
"Like how you say youre a star?" Kurt countered.
"Howd. H-"
"I might have eavesdropped on all of you." Kurt admitted.
"Well, why dont you sing something for us?" Mr. Shue suggested as he walked in from his office. Kurt smiled and exhaled a breath as he tightened his grip on his satchel. I winked at him and went to an empty chair. He scanned the room now looking a bit frightened by the waiting pupils. He turned to Brad and whispered something to him that I could not quite pick up. He turned back to us and let out another breath. The piano began to a familiar song from one of my favorite bands. It was unique too. Ive never heard the piano piece to this song before.
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
The lyrics danced through the open space as he began singing. His voice was beautiful.
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night
It was like the song was made for his voice it sounded absolutely stunning. He looked at us now very determined and proud. All signs of fear vanished.
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
The song finished. I stood up and clapped for him and soon everyone except Rachel who sat in awe joined me. He let out a shaky laugh and bowed before taking a seat. The song was beautiful, his voice was beautiful, he was beautiful. Perfect. He was perfect. Everything. He moved me.
