Never did Amelia think she'd see a familiar face ever emerge from the passenger seat of her brother's car, but right now that was exactly what she was seeing. She rubbed her eyes and even pinched her hand like every cliche movie character did when they were witnessing something unbelievable. But this was real.
"Do mine eyes deceive me?" Rose remarked, tugging at Amelia's arm. She couldn't resound, she was speechless. Blaine walked hand in hand with Kurt up to the two girls, both looking as happy as ever
"Hi Amelia! Hi Rose! How are you guys?" Kurt hugged them both, not understanding the astonished looks on their faces.
"Wow, Kurt! I can't believe it's you!" Rose laughed, patting his arm.
"What do you mean by that?" Kurt asked, but Blaine suddenly stepped in and changed the conversation.
"So, Rosie, I heard you're going to summer camp this year, huh? Very cool! Well, Kurt and I have to go say hi to Mom and Dad, so we'll see you around." Blaine grabbed Kurt's arm and rushed away.
Amelia snickered and Rose gave her an I-can't-believe-this face. This was a first! Kurt had returned, surprising everyone. Something had to be up.
It was night time and the party still didn't look like it was going to end any time soon, so Amelia took a step outside for some fresh air. The loud DJ with a horrible taste in music, the roars of her young cousins and the nettlesome sound of her aunts' laughs had all proved too much for her ears. Plus, Rose was starting to get on her nerves.
The last person she thought she'd encounter was her brother's boy toy, or arm candy, or maybe even his boyfriend, she wasn't sure. But, Kurt was right there outside, too, staring out at the Long Island Sound.
"Amazing, isn't it?" Kurt asked, not taking his eyes off the water. "I'm from Ohio, and the nearest huge body of water is hours away. Sometimes I find myself just sitting on a bench in Battery Park just looking out at the Hudson River. Marveling, actually."
Amelia stood next to him and looked out as well. The lights glittered on the water and it really was all a bit magical. She had never truly realized how amazing it was. She had grown up near water, going to the beach almost every day in the summer and she even had a slight view of water from her bedroom window. Something about Kurt had brought on this new point of view.
"You know, it is. It's beautiful out here." Amelia looked at Kurt, but his eyes were stilled glued to the water and to the dozens of small boats dotted throughout the tiny waves. She nudged Kurt's arm. "So, Ohio? Must suck."
"Yeah, it's worse than it sounds." He laughed
"So what drew you to big old New York?" She asked.
"Ha! What didn't? New York is the center of the world, it's perfect. And the theatre world, as well. I'm a musical theater major, so this was pretty much the only place I could go. Plus, Ohio isn't exactly the kindest place for the flamboyantly gay youth of America." He responded, shaking his head.
"I'm sorry to hear that." Amelia couldn't think of a better response and she cursed herself for that one. In an attempt to redeem herself, she changed the topic. "So you and Blaine, are you guys getting...serious?"
Kurt giggled and grinned. He finally took his eyes off the water and looked down at Amelia.
"You know, I'd like to think we are. I mean, we've only been together a few months, but they've been a great few months. The best I've had since I got here. Your brother is an amazing guy."
"I know. He's a great brother, too." Amelia smiled, took her eyes off the water and looked up at Kurt. "I'm really glad I got to see you again, Kurt."
Kurt's expression changed from joyful and loving to confused. He turned his head to the side.
"Amelia, when Rose said she couldn't believe it was me, what did she mean?" He asked.
Amelia opened her mouth but couldn't find anything to say. She stood there, silent, when the door of the restaurant opened. As if he had been sent by God himself, Blaine popped his head out and looked around until his eyes found Kurt.
"Well there you guys are! I've been looking for you! Come back inside, they're bringing out the cake." He reached out and grabbed Kurt's hand, pulling him inside.
Amelia stood outside a while longer, watching the boats float by. This Kurt guy had to be something serious, or else Blaine would have ditched him the second he had dropped him off from the birthday party a month ago. Kurt was just different. She had only really talked with him once, and even she felt something different than before. He wasn't the casual sweet guy that was entertaining for a few minutes. Not the kind of guy that wasn't worth finding out his last name. Kurt was Kurt Hummel, he had a story, he had thoughts. He had things to say, things that wouldn't normally be shared with someone you only met twice.
Amelia walked back towards the door to join the party again, listening to the music, talking and laughter. She turned back to take one last look at the water. At that moment Amelia had a feeling this wasn't the last she'd see of Kurt Hummel.
