Dr. Kelly sighed and thought for a moment, "Kurt's head hit the lockers with such force, that it caused a concussion and cut the back of his neck. When someone suffers a concussion, it is important to not fall asleep until examined by a doctor."
Carole and Burt waited anxiously as the doctor paused in his explanation.
"In Kurt's case, we can't be sure what exactly happened. It could've been the impact that caused him to black out instantly, or he could've fallen asleep on his own. Either way he is still in the state that he is now."
"Which is...?" Burt asked cautiously.
The doctor grimaced, "Comatose. His concussion was quite severe. Whatever happened at his school has caused him to be unresponsive... I'm sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Hummel. Right now, the only thing to do is hide and wait."
The doctor gave a look of sympathy before excusing himself and leaving the hospital room. Carole turned into her husband's chest, shaking with quiet sobs. Burt stared forward in shock as he absently rubbed his wife's back.
Finn who had been sitting nearby pulled his head forward, lacing his fingers behind his neck. Blaine sat still next to him. He wasn't sure what to do, what to think. He glanced up at the seemingly asleep boy on the hospital bed.
Even unconscious, he was beautiful.
Blaine stood suddenly, acting compulsively. The other three looked up at his movement. He could see the questions in their eyes. "I have to do something." He left the room mechanically, not even sure what he was doing.
But something had to be done.
---
Before Blaine even realized what was happening, he pulled into the parking lot of McKinley. He slammed his truck's door closed and entered the high school in a haze of fury.
It was right before one, lunch for seniors, as Blaine pushed through the sea of students. When he spotted the faded red letterman jacket, he finally knew why he was there.
He could hear Karofsky bragging about punching Kurt as he approached from behind. Blaine pulled the larger boy's shoulder back so he slammed his back against the lockers.
The hall silenced as Blaine pinned Karofsky in front of him. He could see the fear growing in his eyes. Blaine vibrated with anger, black spots beginning to form in his vision.
He pulled his arm back and hit Karofsky as hard as he could. The football player tried to shove Blaine off, but only made him push him harder into the hard metal. Blaine punched him in the stomach.
"You put him in a coma," Blaine spat in his face, "You put my boyfriend, in a fucking coma."
Blaine couldn't remember how many times he hit Karofsky. Every hit made him more mad. But soon he fell to the floor, begging Blaine to not hit him.
How could anyone ever hurt Kurt? How could someone so violently attack the most amazing and beautiful person Blaine had ever met?
"Blaine, stop!" Mr. Shue called from the crowd surrounding them.
Blaine knelt down and pulled Karofsky's face up so that he could hear him.
"You're going to go to Figgins and tell him that you hurt Kurt. You're going to confess to putting my boyfriend in a coma or I'll-" but Blaine was pulled away by the choir director before he could finish the threat.
Once back on his feet, Blaine shoved off Mr. Shue and headed for the parking lot. The students in the halls made a clear walkway for him through the crowd.
Blaine made it to his truck and started the old motor. He pulled out onto the streets, heading back toward the hospital.
---
Blaine ignored the questioning looks from Kurt's family as he entered the lobby. He walked straight passed them and into Kurt's room, where he sat still, unmoving.
For a moment Blaine stood there, watching the boy he loved lay motionless. He pulled a hospital chair to the side of the bed and pressed a kiss to Kurt's forehead before sitting down. Blaine stared at the other boy intently, lacing their finger's together on top of the bed.
"I won't let anyone ever hurt you again," Blaine winced as he remembered Karofsky. He blinked the thoughts away as he brushed his lips across Kurt's knuckles.
"I love you," he whispered, rubbing circles on the back of Kurt's hand.
