Awkwardly, Kurt stood up off the bench near the NYADA campus. Blaine was sitting next to him, dapper as ever, and he'd been helping Blaine go over some key points for his interview. He didn't want to say goodbye, but he barely had enough time to make it to his scripting class.
"Just remember to relax. I'm sure you'll do great." Kurt smiled down at him as he took a sip of his coffee, waiting to say goodbye to his newly discovered boyfriend.
"Y-yeah. I hope. I need this job. I'm not hurting or anything..but it's always good to be prepared." Blaine stood up also, running a hand over his denim jeans to free the tiny clutches of dirt attched to the fabric.
"Alright, well I better get to class." Kurt closed the distance between them, and decided he'd plant a kiss onto Blaine's perfectly shapened lips.
Blaine hummed as they shared a brief moment, and then pulled away. His smile illuminated instantly, and he waved a final goodbye to Kurt as he walked away.
He descended down the block, away from Kurt's building and off the college lot. He pulled out his phone and checked the time, it was about 2:57PM so he still had some time to kill until he had to be at the store.
Realizing that it would take him quite some time to get there; considering he was on the other side of the city, he began a quick pace down the street. Of course there was the normal city banter, the hectic scene around him never fading. It was mid-afternoon also, so he figured there would be a heavy traffic flow.
Blaine was analyzing the high-structured skyscrapers, the afternoon sun radiating the sky and creating darkened shadows. As he was taking in the gorgeous warmth of the animated Sun, he barely noticed his phone was ringing.
"Hello?" Blaine didn't have time to check the caller ID, and he noticed his voice was slightly scratchy. He held the phone away briefly to clear his throat.
"Where the Hell have you been?!" I know Kurt is clearly you're new lover, but I exist too." Cooper sighed on the other line, Blaine could practically hear him pouting.
"I'm sorry. I've stayed at my new boyfriend's house, and I just...didn't feel the need to check my ph- oh my god Bentley!" Blaine exclaimed, practically forgetting to see his dog these past few days. He's gone home to feed him, but he hadn't spent anytime with his baby.
"You didn't just leave that dog to starve, did you..Because I am not above calling the animal control on my own little brother." Coop questioned, ready to prosecute Blaine.
"No, No. I just haven't really been with him lately. I guess I'll see him tonight after my interview." Blaine mumbled quiet "Excuse Me's" as he wandered through the city, peeking between large groups of people waiting at crosswalks and staring at precious items through transparent windows.
"What interview?"
"I filled out an application for PetSmart. So what'd you need again, Coop?" Blaine was starting to get annoyed, it was pretty hard to hear his brother with all the racket in the heart of the city.
"I wanted to know if you were coming back home for Mother's Day next week. She misses you, Blainey."
"Yeah, yeah. I'll see if I can book a ticket. I gotta go, I'm almost there. Love you, text you later. Bye." Blaine hung up as fast as he could, ready to get the conversation over with. He didn't despise his mother, but he certainly wasn't attached to her as much as he should be. The reason he didn't exactly honor talking about the subject was the fact that his father would be there. With Blaine's new stories to tell about his gorgeous boyfriend, he knew that his father would be angered and not comfortable with the subject. That is what irritated Blaine the most. How his own father could hate the "monster" living inside of Blaine.
Kurt tapped his pencil boringly as he listened to his professor, Mrs. Cracket, ramble on about the importance of concentrated detail. He honestly wished that he would be able to take another musical class, however he had requirements to fill and this one happened to be on the syllabus. Sighing as he waited for the 5:30 bell to ring, signaling the end of this lecture, he glanced at the phone sitting in the satchel next to him. Blaine hadn't texted him yet, and it was most likely that the interview would be over by now. Before he knew it, the old saggy-boobed lady was calling his name.
"Mr. Kurt Hummel?" She annouced, glaring at him through tiny spectacles.
"..Yes?" Kurt asked, confused as to why she'd be calling his name.
"There's a phone call for you in the main office?" She stared at him, seeming to be confused herself.
"Okay..." He got up from his desk and walked down the hardwood steps in the auditorium, pushing the heavy doors open and descending down the hallway. Panic started to flood into his thoughts, so he started to speed walk to the office.
When he got to the front, he walked up to the lady behind the desk. He put on his best smile and stood up straight, clearing his throat quietly as the woman peered up at him questiongly.
"Hi, I was called down here? A phone call or something?" He stared at her, trying to glance at the stack of annoucements in her filed binder.
"Name?" She asked, staring down at a post-it note on the faculty phone.
"Kurt Hummel." He said, trying to see who would be trying to reach him at such an inconvienent hour. All of his friends knew that he had class at this time, so he came to the conclusion that it had to be his family. A wave of anxiety rushed through him again, remembering his father's heart-attack a few years ago.
"Come around the back, sweetheart. Pick up the black telephone when you reach the desk in the lobby." She smiled at him as she pressed the button to open the automatic doors.
He nodded, and said a quiet "Thank you," and walked through the doors to the lovely furnished lobby. Walking over to the oak desk in the back part of the room, he searched around for the black phone. Picking up the reciever, he listened intently to hear any signs of whom it could be before he spoke.
"Hello? Kurt here." He said, waiting for a response.
"Hi Kurt, It's Carole." He heard Carole's warm voice flood his ears before a new source of panic flushed through him yet again.
"Is everything alright?" Shifting uncomfortably as he stood, he searched around for the desk chair. He plopped down into it satisfactorily as he waited for her response.
"Of course honey, your father is just having some chest pain. I took him to the Emergency Room a little while ago, and now I'm just sitting in the waiting room." She said, attempting to drown out his fear with her smoothe voice.
"Is it serious? Do you need me to come home?" However, Kurt knew that this could be a problem. He had just missed class due to the recent accident, and his teachers probably wouldn't let him off again on such a short time in between.
"I think you should, I'm not too sure what's going on at the moment. But better be safe then sorry, correct? Well, go back to your class dear. I'll have Finn text you if anything changes." She was smiling on the other line before she hung the phone up quietly.
Kurt was grateful that Carole thought to call him right away, but he truly was worried about his father's condition. Deciding to not head back for the last 10 minutes of class, he picked up his satchel and walked outside of the building. Digging his phone out of his pocket first, he rattled off a quick text to tell Blaine he was out of his session early and would be heading home, asking him to come over immediately.
Blaine was cooking some pasta for dinner, while he danced around with Bentley. The dog was extremely happy to be reunited with his owner, and Blaine was happy to be around him again. When they say Dog is Man's best friend, they are dead serious.
Blaine was draining his noodles over the sink when he heard his phone's ringtone go off, indicating he had a text message. Sighing happily, he hoped that it was Kurt. Blaine couldn't wait to tell him about how well his interview went earlier, and that he thought he had a pretty solid chance of nailing the job.
Picking up his blackberry, he unlocked the screen and saw it really was a text from Kurt. Although, it wasn't a happy one.
From Kurt :) 5:13PM:
I have an emergency, be at my house in 10 minutes if you can. It's important. Oh, and I miss you.
Blaine's heart started to sink at the first part, his thoughts automatically shifting to the fact that Kurt could be breaking up with him. However, his doubts were quickly erased when he saw the last part. He picked up the soggy noodles he had sitting on the counter and shoved them into the fridge. They could wait until later.
Bentley was sitting quietly on the floor when Blaine went over and attached his leash to his collar, before clapping him on the head gently to get up.
Grabbing his keys, his wallet and his phone before locking his door, Blaine started to jog with Bentley down the road toward Kurt's apartment.
A few minutes later, Blaine knocked hastily on Kurt's door. Kurt answered almost immediately, and motioned for them to come inside. Blaine kicked off his shoes and unbuckled Bent's leash, before turning around to stare at his boyfriend. He walked over and hugged him tightly, stroking his back as Blaine attached his lips to Kurt's in a kiss.
Blaine could tell that Kurt's heart and mind wasn't really into the kiss, and he knew that something must've been really wrong. His thoughts veered off into the negative section again, hoping that Kurt still had feelings for him.
"What's wrong, Kurt?" Blaine peered up at him with sad, hopeful honey eyes as Kurt looked back.
"I need to go back to Lima."
