It had been a month and things were still the same. Kurt focused on auditions and Vogue. Blaine threw himself into his work. They kept up their public appearance but it wasn’t enough for Kurt. He wanted more. He wanted Blaine and damn it he wasn’t going to wait around anymore. He started out subtly, wearing tank tops around the house more. Kurt would go to the gym and come home covered in sweat. Blaine would ogle him from the kitchen every time.
Then Kurt started leaving the adjoining bathroom doors unlocked while he was showering. Blaine had walked in on him more than a dozen times. He apologized profusely each time. Occasionally Kurt would walk down the stairs to grab a snack in just his underwear. He knew Blaine was watching him from over his magazine and that was exactly what he wanted.
It backfired. Blaine started staying at work later at nights. They didn’t eat together anymore. Meals had been awkward before, but at least Kurt got to spend time with Blaine. Blaine left before Kurt got up and often times he was fast asleep before Blaine came home. If Kurt didn’t know what was at stake, he would’ve accused Blaine of cheating. But then Blaine wouldn’t have been cheating, Kurt reminded himself, because he and Blaine were nothing.
Soon Kurt started crying himself to sleep. Blaine came home early one night and heard Kurt weeping in the next room. He thought about checking on the taller boy but he didn’t know how. Not only had the two lost their romantic relationship, but now they didn’t know how to be friends.
Blaine would come home from work to find Kurt asleep on the couch. He would cover the boy up with a blanket before going upstairs. He missed the way his blue eyes would dance when he saw Blaine. Now they were always a cold grey, if he even saw them.
This went on for months. Blaine started taking frequent trips to LA because he was trying to recruit new members. Kurt got a part on Broadway and spent most days practicing. On Kurt’s opening night Blaine sat front and center. It made Kurt’s heart jump- until he remembered that the rest of world thought they were a couple. It would look quite odd had his husband not shown up to his premiere. At the end of the play when the curtain went up, Kurt received a huge, beautiful, bouquet of roses from Blaine. They made him cry. While everyone though he was overwhelmed by the love of his husband, he was actually overcome with sadness.
He threw the flowers in the trash that evening. He didn’t see the immense hurt in Blaine’s eyes upon seeing them in the trash. He didn’t hear Blaine’s cries over the jets of the shower. He didn’t look at Blaine anymore. He still loved him, and he had a feeling he always would.
One year passed and Blaine became an official citizen of the United States. Kurt had the date marked on his calendar. What was to happen now? Kurt had Broadway parts lined up. His future as an actor was set. He played the part of the man with unrequited love better than anyone else.
Yes this chapter is incredibly short. It’s supposed to be. It is really angsty and I wanted to convey how hard it was for both of them. Don’t worry, things will get better soon. Next chapter is the last chapter :)
