After two hours of deciding what to wear with Mercedes, who was ecstatic about the whole event, Kurt put on the decided outfit in his room. He was wearing a white button-up shirt and dark blue cardigan with a matching bowtie. Of course, his jeans were incredibly skinny, and he had black dress shoes on his feet. Once he worked with his hair long enough for Mercedes to slap his hand away from his head, he decided he was ready to go.
“Mercedes,” Kurt started, “are you sure – “
“Yes,” she interrupted, smiling at Kurt, “your hair looks amazing, and so do you. He won’t be able to take his eyes off of you all night.” She gave him a wink. In all honesty, Kurt was really nervous; he’s never gone on a date before, and he had no idea what Blaine was planning. The message on his Facebook was vague, saying:
‘5 Saturday at Breadstix. See u there.’
Blaine obviously wasn’t one for formalities, but that was the last thing on Kurt’s mind as he got into his car. “What if I forget how to drive and I crash on the way there?”
“You’ll be fine, Kurt.”
“But – “
“No buts.” Mercedes ordered, telling him good luck and closing his door before he could freak himself out any more. Even Mercedes wasn’t this nervous on her first date. Her very first actual date was with Sam when he met her for coffee at the Lima Bean, so she guessed it wasn’t as formal as this one, but they’ve thankfully had many dates after that.
As Kurt drove, he fidgeted with the air conditioning many times, and even took the long way to Breadstix. It was 4:30 when he left his house, and since it was only a half hour away, he didn’t want to seem overly eager and arrive early. Blaine, on the other hand, got there fifteen minutes early, wanting to have a smoke before Kurt arrived; he was almost as nervous as Kurt was. He didn’t want to mess this up. He even called Wes that evening, and after answering all the questions that Wes had for him about where he’s been this summer, he got advice for his date.
“Wow,” Wes said, “you really like this guy, don’t you?”
“Yeah,” Blaine replied, finishing off his smoke. As soon as he dropped it on the ground, he saw Kurt get out of his car and start walking over to him. “Well, I have to go now, Wes. He’s here, wish me luck.” Then he muttered “I miss you,” because he really did miss Wes and his other friends.
Ever since he started hanging around with the wrong crowd, he hasn’t seen any of his old friends much. He wondered how life would be when he returned to his private school that year with non-gelled hair and a lip ring. He was always a good kid, but ever since he chickened out on telling his parents he was gay, all he has been doing in drinking, partying, and getting into situations that, if caught, would probably get him arrested. Luckily when he wrote profanities on the side wall at Breadstix that one time with his friends Mark and Rob, he didn’t get caught. He wouldn’t have been able to take Kurt out on this date, since he would probably never be allowed back.
“I miss you too, let’s hang out this week,” Wes suggested. “You can tell us how this date goes!”
“Okay, sounds good. Bye.”
“Bye Blaine!”
He quickly ended the call and put his phone on silent just as Kurt walked up to him. He looked at the time on his phone, showing it was three minutes after five.
“You’re late,” Blaine stated.
“And hello to you too,” Kurt rolled his eyes. Blaine noticed how the cardigan Kurt was wearing made his eyes look slightly darker, and made his hair look even lighter. He just stared at Kurt, taking in the whole outfit; the cute bowtie, the nicely fitting top, and of course, those jeans…
“Are you coming or not?” Kurt asked and turned around, realizing that Blaine hadn’t moved from where he was first standing. Blaine looked up, silently telling himself to follow Kurt and to stop staring at his perfectly shaped ass.
“Uh…” he tried to make words form, “yeah, let’s go inside.”
When they walked in, Blaine said his name, and the waitress brought them to their table. It was right next to the window, in an area not too busy, and there weren’t any screaming kids there. Thank goodness; Blaine usually couldn’t stand kids, especially crying babies.
He waited for Kurt to sit down first, but when he didn’t, Blaine was confused. “Are you going to sit down? Or…”
“Oh, I didn’t want to steal your seat,” Kurt said playfully, a grin appearing on his face as he looked over at Blaine. Blaine chuckled, and pulled out a chair for Kurt before grabbing one for himself.
“I gave you the one I didn’t want,” Blaine said, laughing now as Kurt raised an eyebrow, but kept the smile on his face.
“How dapper of you, Blaine Anderson.”
“I can be very dapper,” he said, looking at his menu. It was possible; he did, after all, have a more formal outfit on, wearing a black button up with dark skinny jeans and a silver belt. Of course, Blaine couldn’t help wearing his black converse shoes.
Once they ordered their food, they started talking about their summers. It led on to many other conversations, mostly about school, their friends, and what they wanted to do when they grew up. It was mostly Kurt talking about school and the future, considering Blaine was very vague with his information. The conversation was also usually light, not getting too far into details of their personal lives just yet.
“Broadway?” Blaine asked, his mouth full, when Kurt told him where he wanted to go after high school. He was picking apart a breadstick after hiding a huge amount in his backpack. Kurt didn’t care though; he knew that some people did that, and found it actually quite clever.
“Yeah,” Kurt said, “I’m in my glee club at school. Rachel and I are looking for a place to stay in New York already.”
“I hope you get to Broadway; you’re really good at singing and performing. I saw those videos of you online. I would have never expected you to be a football player – you look surprisingly hot in shoulder pads.”
Kurt blushed. “Yeah, most people don’t expect it. I was a cheerleader, too.”
“I know, I saw those videos as well. You’re very flexible,” Blaine stated, winking at Kurt, who once again blushed.
He realized that he blushed a lot around Blaine, but he just couldn’t help it.
After the waitress brought Kurt his salad and Blaine his pasta, Blaine asked for another plate of breadsticks, and after ignoring the suspicious look from the waitress, he started eating his food.
“Mmm,” Blaine moaned, almost sexually, as he chewed his pasta and licked his fork. He would be the death of Kurt.
“I don’t understand why you bought a salad,” he spoke, bringing Kurt back from his daydream. “Why eat something healthy when you could eat something much better?”
“Because it’s bad for my figure,” Kurt replied.
“But it’s good for the soul!” Blaine said, his eyes lighting up when he smiled. Surprisingly, he didn’t continue with a statement about Kurt’s figure.
When the waitress came around with another round of breadsticks, he packed them into his bag and stood up, Kurt eyeing him curiously.
“I’ll be right back,” he states simply, leaving Kurt at the table and heading towards the main entrance. Kurt just watches him as he talks to one of the waitresses. She gave him the biggest smile and checked him out, obviously thinking he’s attractive. Of course she’s interested in him; he’s a hot bad boy, who wouldn’t be? Kurt realized how lucky he was to meet Blaine. He didn’t think that he was very attractive, not even close to Blaine’s level. But here he was, on a date with this awesome, although very snarky, guy who could get anyone he wanted. And he wanted Kurt. Kurt smiled at that thought, leaning his head on his arm, his elbow resting gently on the table. When Blaine walked back over, he was holding a container with something in it, two empty containers, two plastic cups, and some plastic utensils. Kurt didn’t understand why he had these items, but he guessed that the waitress was more than happy to give them to Blaine. Too bad he’s on a date with me, Kurt thought proudly.
He placed the three containers on the table, one empty one in front of Kurt. When he gave Blaine a questioning look, Blaine said to put his food in the container.
“We’re leaving”
“Where are we going?” Kurt asked, kind of weirded out at the fact that they were leaving so early. But Blaine simply said, “You’ll see,” and started packaging his food, Kurt following suit.
As soon as everything was packed up and in Blaine’s bag, Blaine went up to pay. Kurt offered to pay half, but since Blaine asked him on this date, he was being stubborn and said he’d pay.
“I’m surprised you didn’t like, dine and dash,” Kurt said, only half joking.
“Well I usually do, but tonight’s a date, so…” Blaine said, not joking at all. Kurt just nodded slowly, following him out of Breadstix and going through the doors. Once they were outside, Blaine just kept on walking, even after Kurt’s protests. “Where are we going?” He asked.
“You’ll see,” Blaine repeated simply, continuing walking. “Come on,” he said, grabbing Kurt’s hand, and Kurt inhaled sharply, feeling the rush going through his arm when they made contact. His hand was warm in Blaine’s, and it was weird, considering the only people he’s held hands with were friends or his parents. This contact made him feel happy inside, and his heart beat sped up a little as they continued walking.
At one point, Blaine let go of his hand, unfortunately, and started climbing up on a little shed, his backpack hopefully not getting food all over it inside. Kurt was incredibly confused, and just stared at him, not moving.
“Are you coming?” Blaine asked, looking down at Kurt. Kurt just continued staring incredibly, wondering how Blaine could have even gotten up there. Sure, he could dance in these jeans no problem, but to climb up on a shed? Kurt wasn’t even sure he could make it with gym shorts on! He tried jumping up and reaching the ledge – Kurt was a little bit taller than Blaine, so although it didn’t work for Blaine, he could have maybe pulled it off. When his hands gripped the ledge, he kicked his feet, looking for an edge to push off of, and when he found it, he lifted himself up as well as he could. He climbed up awkwardly, and as soon as he made it, he stood up to look at Blaine waiting for him.
“Alright, keep following me.”
“Isn’t this going to get us in trouble, Blaine?” Kurt asked. “What if we get arrested? What if I fall off? What if –“
“None of that is going to happen Kurt, don’t worry. It’s too dark out for anyone to see us, and if you start to fall, I’ll catch you,” Blaine replied with a cheeky grin.
“How cheesy,” Kurt said, smiling, while Blaine started laughing.
“Alright,” Blaine started as the reach the edge of one building leading to another, “there’s a bit of a jump here, but you’re taller than I am. So, if I can make it, you can.” After he jumped over to the other building, he placed his back pack down and looked back at Kurt. “You can do it.”
Kurt made a leap of faith, and he swore he was going to fall down when he reached the other building’s roof, but Blaine quickly grabbed him and brought him close. Kurt’s heart was racing now, whether from the adrenaline of sneaking up here, or the fact that Blaine’s face was just inches away from his; he can almost feel Blaine’s breath on his lips.
“See,” Blaine said, his lips curled into his usual grin, his eyes locked with Kurt’s, “I told you I’d catch you if you fell.”
