Blaine woke up next morning for noise coming from the hall. He rubbed his eyes and sat up. The penguin fell into his lap and he put it onto the nightstand. He was feeling such happiness he didn’t even know where it came from. Well, maybe he did know…
He took a shower dressed up and put the toy into his pocket. Walking down the stairs the sounds became clearer. His mom was busy cleaning up the house, and encouraging his father to help him. What he did, with a constant frown on his face.
“Come on honey. I’m sure she will not check out if there is anything under the couch… or the TV, or behind the pictures on the wall. What are you doing with those anyway?” Mr. Anderson who was replacing the couch asked his wife who was dusting behind the pictures hung up on the wall.
“Oh I’m sure she will, she certainly did last time she visited us.” She answered turning to the bookshelves and starting on them with the duster. Her husband frowned even more. “She asked why the wall is lighter in color behind them. Who asks something like this? And she inspected it with her finger and said the wall was covered in dust.”
“Morning!” Blaine came to the room confused. “What are you doing? I thought we were going to visit grandma next week.”
“No honey she decided to come and visit us today, just so she can…” Mrs. Anderson glanced at her husband and continued “see us.”
“I wanted to tell you yesterday but you were already asleep. Coop’s coming too and your aunt, and her children. They are staying here, so you are going to share your room with your brother.”
“Can I help?” He offered.
“No, just go to school and I’ll take the laundry from your room. You have glee practice today right?”
“Yes.”
“They are gonna be here when you arrive home.”
“Okay, I come home right after practice.”
“Breakfast is prepared in the kitchen. Hurry, don’t be late from school.” His mom said smiling.
“Thank you.” Blaine walked to the kitchen and sat down on a stool, but jumped up immediately “MOM!” He shouted running back to the hall. “MOM! Does that mean that I am free next Monday?” He asked grinning like a Chesire cat.
“Yes you are, do you have plans for next Monday?” His father asked “Somewhere? With someone?” He smiled knowingly.
“Yes actually I was planning on driving down to Lima to see another sectionals. But I think I’m going alone. Or maybe you could come, or grandma, grandpa, Cooper, or Aunt Dorine. Or we can all go together. It’s gonna be amazing.”
“Yes that is a great idea! The kid’s would also love it! We should all go.” His mom agreed.
“Yes, and if you want to bring someone, maybe someone special, that would be also great.” His father added. Blaine and his mom stared at him with questioning looks.
“Okay, so I’m already late. I just pack some breakfast and take it with me.” He went to the kitchen, put some food in a box and kissed his parents on the cheek before leaving. “Bye Mom. Bye Dad. Love you!” And he was already on his way to school.
“What was that?” Mrs. Anderson turned to her husband.
“I’m sensing a girl has made her way to his heart.” He answered smiling proudly.
“Oh.” She said and turned away so that her husband won’t see her blushing. Wonder how he can’t see the obvious… If someone has really found his way to Blaine’s heart he will see it… really soon.
That day Blaine had no time to meet Kurt. He persuaded the Warblers to go and watch an other sectionals next week, as he is going to be there with his family anyway, this would be a perfect opportunity to see one of the other choirs compete before the regionals.
After practice he headed home with his head clouded by Kurt’s flawlessness. When he arrived most of his relatives were already there.
Opening the front door he was immediately teared down by his nieces. He almost knocked down the incredibly ugly umbrella stand placed by the door. Wait… Since when do we have an umbrella stand at all?
“Blaine! Look, we got you this!” Tiffany handed him a drawing of him with his hear gelled back singing on a stage in his Dalton uniform.
“That is you.” Emily added.
“Girls this is awesome! Thank you!” He replied with the same amount of excitement in his voice. He hugged them again.
“We made it!” They smiled proudly.
“I figured. I love it! I already know the perfect place for it.”
Blaine’s mom was heared in the next moment stepping out of the kitchen.
“I’m going to the attic and bringing that disgusting salad bowl down, just so we can serve dinner in it, Victoria.” She said obviously forced calmness and kindness quieting her voice saying the word disgusting, just so, and a few more after Victoria.
She leaned to the wall closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths. When she opened her eyes she saw Blaine and the kids watching her with questioning looks.
“It’s on I guess.” Blaine said sympathetically with a small smile on his lips.
“Yeahh” she said sighing “Hey Honey! How was your day? Were you late from class? How was practice?”
“Is Blaine home already?” The elder Mrs. Anderson stepped out of the kitchen. “Is this how you are looking for the bowl, Kathrine? It shows that you weren’t born and raised as an Anderson. In our family there is no lazyness existing.” She said with a strict and disappointed tone.
“I was just asking my SON about his day.” She glared at Victoria and left.
“So Blaine” She started leading his grandson to the hall sitting down in one of the oversized armchairs and motioning for Blaine to do the same. He sat on the couch opposite to her. “How are things going at Dalton Academy? Do the teachers and the other students treat you as they should an Anderson man?”
“Hey grandma! Well yes, I guess they do.” He said with an awkward smile on his face. The children were heard to be running upstairs to the guestroom.
“You guess? How do you mean you guess? Did something happen?”
“ No, no! On the contrary. Everything is perfect. They treat me as they treat everyone else.”
“As everyone else?! You are not everyone else, young man. You are an Anderson, do they know that?” She was indignant.
“I see, ummm, I’m just gonna go to my room and change my clothes now.” He said and ran upstairs in a way a proper Anderson man would never do.
In his room he closed the door, dropped all of his clothes, not even caring to hang them and sat down on the bed wearing only boxers. He hugged his pillow and went to his special place to find Kurt.
He wanted to tell him the news but Kurt was nowhere to be found. If only I could leave him a message… No! He wanted to tell Kurt himself and see his face, his reactions. Suddenly another great idea hit him. He ran up to Kurt’s swingset and found a pen and a piece of paper on it. What a coincidence! He smiled knowing he was the one to “put” them there.
He’d wrote a short note to Kurt and pinned it on the tree the swing was hanging from and went back to reality, just in time. His brother Cooper was banging the door.
“Blaine open up! I know you’re in there!”
“In a minute!” He shouted and went to open the door.
“Hey bro! Woah! We’re you jerking off?!” He laughed.
“What? No!” He looked down at himself and realized he is still not wearing too much clothes.
“You were sooo jerking off. Why else would you close the door?” he asked.
“You’re out of your mind Coop.” He said while putting on a t-shirt and sweatpants.
“Hm I see you want to make an impression on grandma “Mr. Oh So Proper Anderson Man”” Cooper teased his brother.
“Fuck” the younger said and changed to a pair of black pants and a black dress-shirt. “I look like a mafia member.” He whined.
“You sure do with your puppy eyes Squirt.” He said.
“Don’t EVER call me that!” Blaine snapped.
“I missed you little bro.” Cooper suddenly turned serious and hugged his brother. Blaine hugged back and said “I missed you too Coop.”
“Dinner is ready boys!” They heard their mum shout, and headed downstairs.
“An Anderson lady should not shout like that.” Victoria muttered. The boys and their mother rolled their eyes, plastered huge smiles on their faces and entered the dining room.
“Hmm, nice bowl mum.” Cooper said smirking by which he earned a glare from Kathrine.
“See, he has a good taste.” The eldest Anderson lady said.
The whole Anderson family sat down around the table. They were talking about family, work, school, things proper Andersons should and should not do.
“So Blaine I heard that the Warblers are to compete at the Regionals this year. I know that with you leading them they were to become something more. The girls of the neighboring finishing-school must be flattered by a handsome and charismatic young leader like you.”
Blaine, Cooper and their mum choked on their food. Blaine smiled shyly, Cooper was laughing silently while Kathrine was nearly shocked.
“Can… Can you hand me the peas please, honey?” She turned to Blaine trying to drop the topic.
“Of course, here you are.” He handed her the food and they started to eat again. There was silence for 30 whole seconds, they almost believed that the topic was off the hook until Mr. Anderson spoke up.
“Mother, don’t put him out of countenance. He has a girlfriend.” This time Blaine spit out the food he was chewing, his mum started to cough uncontrollably.
“Blaine this is obscenity!” Victoria said with disgust in her voice as Blaine tried to clean up the mess he made on the table.
“I’m sorry.” He said looking at his mother with eyes screaming for help.
If coming out for his father was unimaginably hard, what was the best expression to describe coming out for his grandmother or worse, almost the whole Anderson “dynasty”.
“And who is that girl? Do I know her family? Is she from Westerville? How this has been going on? How serious is your relationship? Are you thinking about proposing?” Blaine just looked at her with eyes wide open.
