Kurt woke up surrounded by the smell of fresh ground coffee and something a bit earthier. He knew that his sheets didn't smell like that. His sheets smelled of his jasmine detergent. He opened his eyes and chanced a glance around the darkened room. That's right. He had fallen asleep watching that movie and then he had crawled into bed with Blaine. Well he actually insisted that Blaine crawl into bed with him. Blaine, ever the gentleman, offered to sleep downstairs on the couch but Kurt had insisted he sleep in bed. Now here he was at, he looked at the clock, 6:24am, wrapped in his boyfriend's arms. He could get use to this. He could really get use to this. Lazy mornings wrapped up in the warmth of Blaine, sharing slow, languid kisses before they both accept reality and get out of bed. Kurt found himself thinking about the two of them dawdling around the kitchen together, Kurt making breakfast, Blaine, his curls dripping from his shower as he wraps his arms around Kurt's middle kissing Kurt's neck. They eat together before Blaine eventually goes down and gets the coffee shop open where they share a cup of decaf (he was really going to have to learn to appreciate a cup of decaf every once in a while if he was going to start hanging out around here more often). before Blaine kisses him in front of the entire shop before he goes off to work.
Kurt was jolted back to the present when he felt a thumb rubbing gently over his cheek. He looked up to find those golden eyes staring back at him that made his insides turn to mush. "Hey you."
"Good morning," Blaine said with a gruff morning voice. "What are you doing up so early."
Kurt shrugged. "Just thinking I guess."
"Oh yeah, what about?"
"You. And me I guess. How my life has changed since I realized how great you really were. Kicking myself for not realizing it sooner."
"Well you're here now." Blaine kissed Kurt's forehead as he pulled him even further into his chest. "How did you sleep?"
"Good. You?"
"Great with you next to me."
Kurt blushed and looked up. "Oh god that was probably the cheesiest thing I have ever heard."
Blaine laughed. "Yeah, but you like the cheese. Don't even act like you don't, I saw you ask Reese for that cheese Danish last week."
"Ok, Anderson, you got me. I love the cheese." Kurt leaned up and kissed Blaine with innocent intentions at first and quickly escalading to a heated make-out session, grabbing at clothes, rutting together, pulling at hair. It wasn't until after a while that Kurt pushed at Blaine's chest hoping to slow it down but not really wanting it to stop. God how he didn't want it to stop. "Hey, I think we need to slow down. Too much."
Blaine rolled off with a groan. "You make sure nothing is fun, don't you."
"Just remember, this was your suggestion."
Another groan. "Stupid, stupid me." Blaine faked disappointment.
"One day, I promise. I won't be able to hold out forever. Trust me. You keep up this rolling out of bed completely sexy as hell thing, and it will be sooner rather than later."
"Yes!" Blaine pumped his fist in the air John Bender style from the Breakfast Club.
Kurt giggled. "Ok hot shot, go take a shower and I will make you something to eat with whatever dismal supplies I can find in your fridge."
Blaine crawled out of the bed, purposefully hiding one part of his anatomy from plain sight. "Well if you need anything, there is much more downstairs." Kurt nodded as the men started to walk in opposite directions. Kurt had almost gotten to the threshold of the door and Blaine to the bathroom. "And Kurt." Kurt turned around. "I don't mind if you borrow a shirt but just make sure to add some pants this time. If I hear, and I quote, how 'lucky I am to be able to touch such a sweet ass as yours', one more time, I think I am just going to have to fire him for good this time. I know I threaten it, like a lot, but I had one old lady ask me how my boyfriend with that really cute tush was doing. What did all of New York City see you that day?"
Kurt just laughed because he couldn't be mad about it he brought it on himself. "Well at least everyone is appreciating the correct part of my anatomy."
2 months later
Kurt had been on his way back to Interval after a long day of work. He had just gotten back from a very long photo shoot in some old NASA hanger when his phone buzzed alerting him to a text message. He smiled fully expecting it to be Blaine, telling him to hurry back because he missed him. He took out his phone and saw a name he never expected to see again.
Erik7:48pm
Can we meet to talk? Tomorrow? 8am? Before you go to work?
Kurt looked at the message a bit confused.
Kurt7:49pm
What for?
Erik
7:49pm
I need to talk to you about the apartment.
Kurt sighed before typing out a reply.
Kurt7:51pm
Fine. Meet me at that little coffee shop around the corner from the Vogue offices. 8am. If you aren't there, I leave.
Erik
7:55pm
See you then.
Thank god Kurt was just in front of Interval now because he didn't know how much longer he could go without seeing his boyfriend. His current boyfriend, so he could put that loser ex-boyfriend as far from his mind as possible. Not that he wasn't going to have to face the asshole tomorrow bright and early but until then, there was a curly headed, hazel eyed man behind a coffee bar with a smile that could cure cancer that in a coffee shop filled with college students finishing up their cappuccinos and homework, only had eyes for him. Kurt walked through the door and Blaine spotted him and his polite charming smile grew into that of elation.
Over the last couple of months Kurt had noticed the little things that Blaine did that he found cute or adorable. For example, whenever Blaine was emptying the dishwasher after dinner, he always closed it with his foot. Or the way that he knows even by just looking at Kurt that it has been a long day and makes him his special cherry and white chocolate coffee with a generous helping of whipped cream and as he sets it down he always kisses Kurt's temple which never fails to make his heart drop to his stomach. Or the way that every time that he sees Kurt, even if they have been in the same room for hours, his eyes seem to shine like gold flecks which makes Kurt's breath hitch every time he sees the look in Blaine's eye, and today is no exception.
Blaine comes out from behind the bar and immediately greets Kurt with his 1000-watt smile and a bone-crushing hug that picks Kurt right up off the ground despite the height difference. "God, I missed you today."
Kurt buried his face in Blaine's neck taking in the scent of hazelnut, coffee beans, and raspberries before Blaine set him down on solid ground and Kurt lets out a little giggle. "You just saw me less than twelve hours ago."
"Well it was twelve hours too long." Blaine leans in and kisses Kurt before letting out a sigh. "Did you have dinner? We can order in or Reese gave me that recipe for the pasta carbonara you liked so much last week."
Kurt thought for a second. "How about we just order in for tonight. I am starving. I only had a small Waldorf salad for lunch. Things have been a bit crazy at work."
"Ok, how about you go upstairs and pick something out and order and I will be up as soon as I can get rid of the art students in the corner." Kurt looked to find that the shop had mostly cleared out.
"Sure. Are you in the mood for anything in specific?"
"Nope, your pick. I picked Chinese last week so it's up to you." Blaine gave Kurt's hand one last squeeze as Kurt walked away. "You know where the take out menus are, right?"
"Yes, babe, I know where they are," and Kurt disappeared upstairs.
Hours later and Kurt is finishing his club sandwich from Good Restaurant and Blaine had finished his green Chile mac and cheese 15 minutes ago while Sabrina plays in the background but neither are paying attention to the movie that well finding each other's eyes way more interesting. Blaine is stroking through Kurt's hair, both feeling a bit tired from the day.
"I'm getting tired. Are you staying tonight?" Blaine asked innocently enough. Ever since that night, Kurt had been staying over more often then not but they didn't have sex. I mean there was some heated make out sessions that had one of them excusing themselves to the bathroom but they had not actually had sex since the first night they got together.
"I think I am. I have to leave pretty early tomorrow but I don't really want to go all the way home tonight."
"That's fine. What do you have going on that you need to leave early?"
Kurt didn't really want to tell him that he was going to meet with his ex-boyfriend. "Um, I just have to go into work early that's all." Kurt knew it was a lie but he didn't want to get Blaine all riled up for nothing. He would meet Erik, get whatever needed to be straightened out straightened out and then he would leave. No harm, no foul.
"Oh, ok. Are you ready for bed?" Kurt nodded his head with heavy lids. "Let's get to bed." Blaine led Kurt up the stairs of the apartment and into the bedroom where Kurt pulled open the third drawer, his drawer, in the dresser and fished out a pair of pajamas for the night. Blaine came out of the bathroom dressed and ready for bed and by the time Kurt got back from changing, Blaine was barely awake enough to curl Kurt up into his side before falling asleep.
Beep Beep Beep BeepAs much as Kurt doesn't want to get out of bed, he has to. "Mmm. Early." He rolls over to a cold, empty spot in the bed. That was nothing unusual. He would go down there and Blaine would be down there, coffee in hand and a warm kiss waiting for him.
Kurt rolls out of bed, quickly taking a shower. Who gets up before 7am anyways? His boyfriend that's who. How he did it every day would always elude him.
Kurt toweled himself off, padding to the bedroom. He had stocked the closet with a few pairs of pants. As much as he liked Blaine, he was a bit on the short side meaning his pants, though very gorgeous, cropped off mid shin on him. He smiled. There was always something about the sight of seeing his and Blaine's things mingling together, sharing closet space.
Kurt pulls out a pair of his tight black trousers and then moves to Blaine's collection of barely touched designer labels. He picks out a purple Armani shirt and a sleek black skinny tie. He goes back to the bathroom finishing the look by getting his hair to stand just so. He grabbed his jacket because it was starting to get a little chilly in the early fall air and his bag making his way down the stairs to the shop. He sees Blaine hard at work on whatever that bitchy Manhattan mommy in front of him tapping her foot impatiently just ordered.
Kurt finds himself standing in front of Blaine. "Morning babe." Blaine leans over the bar to give Kurt a kiss. "How did you sleep last night?" Blaine is back to work on whatever orders are coming in.
"Not bad. I missed you this morning though."
Blaine chuckled. "You say that every morning you sleep over."
"It doesn't ever make it untrue."
Blaine just shook his head at Kurt. "You are incorrigible."
"And you are adorable." They lean in for another kiss.
"Can I get you anything before you go? Coffee? Muffin?" Blaine asked once they parted.
"No, I'll just grab something at work." He lies. He will get coffee at the place he is meeting Erik. "But it won't be half as good as yours." That's true. Nothing beats Blaine's coffee.
"Ok well then, I'll see you tonight?" He holds out the end in a question.
"Always." He leans across the bar for one last kiss.
He starts to walk toward the front door. "Bye Wes. See you later."
"Bye Kurt," Wes screams from behind the register.
"See you girls later and Lacy, I want the recipe for the Lemon-Raspberry muffins to send to my dad."
"I will have it ready tonight when you come back." Both girls wave him out as he heads toward the other coffee shop. He feels like a traitor. Blaine's shop is the best in New York by far but here he is, sneaking away to go have coffee elsewhere.
He can see him. Even through the glass windows he can see him. He looks the same, still tall, handsome, model-esque as ever. Kurt takes one last deep breath and walks through the French glass door. He orders a nonfat mocha and sits across from Erik without a word spoken between the two. They both sit there for a few long seconds until Kurt opens his mouth. "I don't really have all day and I have to be to work soon so what is all this about?"
Erik takes a sip of his vanilla cappuccino if Kurt was guessing right, ignoring Kurt's snap. "How have you been Kurt? You look good."
"I'm fine. Busy." Kurt takes a cleansing breath bringing the bitch stare down. Erik didn't come for a fight. "What is this about Erik. You said that you wanted to talk about the apartment."
"Kurt, I hate to do this, I really do but we had a deal. I said that you had two months to find a new place. It's been over two months. I'm sorry but I have to stop paying." Shit! Kurt had completely forgotten all about the deal of two months. "Me and Marco are looking for a place, a big place. We are talking about getting a dog. It's not a marriage and kids but maybe one day...in the very distant future." He laughed to himself looking into his coffee paying Kurt no attention. He took himself out of whatever place he had drifted off to and looked back up at Kurt. "The apartment is paid through next Saturday but then you need to be out."
Kurt exhaled. Air rushes out of his lungs with nowhere in particular to go, kind of like him. "I understand. I forgot. Geez, how could I forget? I think I just got so caught up with having a boyfriend and the newness of a relationship..."
"You're seeing someone?" Erik somehow seems interested. He never showed interest in anything that Kurt had to say when they were together but now he seemed genuinely interested in what he had to say. Maybe whoever this Marco is was actually doing some good for Erik.
"Uh...yeah. I'm dating Blaine, that coffee shop owner that I introduced you to.
"Oh yeah. Him. Curly hair, kinda short?"
Kurt hid his face from Erik as he tried to suppress his laughter. "Yeah. That's him."
"Well, good for you. Never thought you'd be the type to go after someone like that but I'm happy for you. Isn't it crazy how being in love will do that to you? Make you forget the smallest things. It's great to have that feeling back again isn't it?" Kurt just stared at him stunned, rendered speechless. Love? Did he love Blaine? He couldn't form words so he just nodded. "He loves you," It wasn't a question, it was an answer, maybe to all that was holding him back from fully committing to Blaine. It was a very little part of him that he had left to give but there was always a little part that he could never seem to give to Blaine...until now. "It was apparent even when you introduced us months ago. He takes care of you?"
"Yeah, he does."
Erik said nothing just nodded his head. Erik seemed different, lighter maybe. Life didn't seem to be weighting him down as much as it use to be. He seemed happier which made him even that much more attractive. He didn't seem to have a brooding look forever plastered on his face but somehow, even as attractive as he was, Kurt didn't find him the slightest bit attractive. Nothing.
Maybe this meeting was exactly what he needed. Things with Blaine moved so fast, there was not really time to grieve over the lost relationship. The more he sat with Erik talking, the more he realized that Blaine is where he belonged. Blaine is sexy but doesn't know it, he is smart but doesn't flaunt it, he is kind but doesn't abuse it, and most of all he loves Kurt with all that he has and would do anything for Kurt. Kurt loved that about Blaine. He loved everything about Blaine. He lov-"
"This is nice. Did you ever think when I walked out that we would be doing this, having coffee together like old friends? We should do it again sometime."
Kurt felt a lightness about him that he hadn't felt in a long while. "Yeah maybe some day we should," and he took one last sip of his coffee.
