Chapter 2.
“So are you coming with me tonight? We could go out to Breadsticks? Or maybe go to the movies together?” Kurt nodded absentmindedly, his thoughts still on Blaine after yesterday, as Santana rambled on. He yelped and pulled his hand back the moment he felt how Santana had laced her fingers in his.
“Kurt! What are you doing?” she hissed, pulling him round the corner, “what was that?!” she demanded.
“Reflex.” Kurt said, trying to ease the atmosphere but failing miserably.
“We had a deal, remember! Don’t ruin it.”
“I know. Don’t worry about it.” Kurt sighed, regretting ever having to agree with it in the first place.
He hated lying as much as the next person, it made things complicated. But everything about his situation was already complicated enough. Being in a straight relationship in which both parties were unmistakably gay never really seemed Kurt’s ideal vision of high school romances but neither was the sound of being bullied, instead. He guessed it was both a blessing and a curse the day Santana found out about him and had brought up the topic of ‘beard’.
It was a concept entirely strange to Kurt when she first approached him, neither had he really needed it. He’d never told anyone about it but he also never had felt like people suspected anything. Santana, however, told him she’d always known and Kurt started to worry that maybe others did too, so he decided the best way to confuse them was to agree with Santana’s weird proposal. That was how, ten months later, he ended up discussing tonight’s date with her.
“The movies should be just fine.” He replied dryly and walked off. As he reached his locker, he finally felt like he could breathe again. He sighed as he grabbed his books and put them in his satchel. He didn’t really like classes on Monday but was looking forward to Glee club tonight.
“So....” Kurt froze as he felt hands slide over his waist, he bit the inside of his cheek to make sure he wouldn’t yelp again, “are you picking me up then? Tonight?” Santana mumbled. Kurt turned, released himself from her grip and nodded, “around eight?”
“Sounds perfect.” She smiled and kissed him. Kurt’s eyes widened but he let the moment pass. Santana smiled before running off.
Without realizing it, his hand went to his mouth and wiped his lips. Fortunately, no one had noticed. Santana had been the first girl he’d ever kissed –had been the first person he’d ever kissed, period- and always tasted like sweet cherry. It wasn’t bad really, just not his flavour. He snapped out of his thoughts, thinking he’d seen a familiar face and the familiar curly brown hair walk around the corner. Blaine. He quickly skipped to the hallway he thought he’d seen Blaine turn in but as his eyes searched the different faces, none of them made his heart skip a beat. “I’m going insane.” He muttered, his hand wiping his forehead.
“Could’ve told you that years ago, Hummel.” A senior smirked as he walked past.

The choir room was already occupied by Rachel, Finn, Mercedes and Artie as he arrived. He smiled and entered the room, finally feeling less tense. In choir room, he never lied. Well...he did, as Santana was also part of the Glee club and their pretence was still there, but when he sang everything was real.
“Kurt, you fancy coming over tonight? Breakfast at Tiffany’s is on!” Rachel suggested as he sat down.
“San and I have a date tonight.” Kurt shrugged, “Sorry.”
“I still don’t get it though. You two?” she said, pointing to Kurt and, with lacking of Santana, a point mid-air.
“Rach.” Kurt sighed, this conversation seemed to come up every month.
“No, I agree with Rachel. Santana’s just mean.” Mercedes acknowledged.
“She’s not that bad.” Kurt defended her and he meant it, too. Santana wasn’t as bad as she pretended to be, she was just...angry.
The main reason Santana was less mean to him was because he was the only one who knew and understood why. “Guys.”, Kurt sighed in relief as Mr Shue entered, taking all interest off the conversation, announcing he had good news, “we’ve got a new addition to Glee club. Everyone welcome Blaine!” Kurt’s mouth dropped when he saw Blaine enter, standing there nervously, looking across the room. He was beaming at everyone and his smile grew even bigger as his eyes fell on Kurt, and his face showed recognition and a glint of relief, “He’s a transfer and I’m expecting you all to give him a warm welcome.” Will continued, “Now Blaine, it’s customary for Glee’s new arrivals to sing us a song to see what we’re dealing with.”
Blaine’s expression changed to panic, “But I haven’t prepared anything.” He spoke, his eyes darted to Kurt’s, pleading to help him.
“Mr Schue, if I may,” Kurt raised his hand, “I’ve prepared something for today. I would love to do it.”
“Oh.” Will looked from one to another, seeming taken a bit of guard but quickly recovered and shrugged, “the floor’s yours then Kurt.”
Kurt got up and saw out of the corner of his eye that Blaine had taken the empty chair beside his. After he’d given his music sheet to Brad, he took in a deep breath, clearing his head, and started singing. The words flowing from his lips, telling truths he’d never be able to say out loud himself. He let his eyes wander over his friend’s faces, skipping Blaine’s deliberately. He knew that if he looked at Blaine, his voice would get unsteady. As he finished they all clapped and smiled, he made a little bow. Right before he sat back down, his eyes met Blaine’s. They had a glint in them which made his head spin, Blaine’s smile was dazzling. “That was beautiful.” Blaine whispered before Will got up again and addressed them all.
Every Monday, Mr Schue would announce the week’s new assignment and then they’d all get the chance to perform their songs on Friday. Kurt was only listening half of it as the time passed, his mind occupied with thoughts about Blaine. “Now Blaine,” the teacher finished, “you got off easily today. And seeing as you were president of the Warblers I’m sure you’re an amazing vocalist... However, I expect a song from you too this week.”
Kurt frowned slightly and wondered what a Warbler was.
When they left, they all were buzzing with ideas. Some had already agreed on singing together, others were discussing which songs would be good. Kurt stayed a bit behind, rummaging through the stuff in his satchel to make sure he had everything. “Thanks for saving me out there.” Blaine appeared next to him all of a sudden and Kurt let out a little scream. “Sorry.”, Blaine smiled, “I didn’t mean to startle you.” He seemed amused.
“That’s quite alright.” Kurt said as a reply to both statements, “but not sure you needed it. What’s a Warbler?”
“The name of the members of my previous glee club.” Blaine explained as they walked down the hall and onto the street. Kurt nodded, “I see.”
They neared the bus stop but Kurt still didn’t want the conversation to end. “So, how did your first day go?”
“Not that bad,” Blaine smiled, looking in front of him, “I mean everyone’s been nice so far.”
Kurt looked at Blaine sideways. His skin was slightly tanned, some stubble formed on his chin but it suited him, his hair was held perfectly in place with gel as opposed to when Kurt had met him at the coffee shop, and his eyes were a sort of amber coloured, like golden syrup. “You’re staring.” Blaine pointed out and a blush appeared on his cheeks. Kurt swallowed, “Sorry, I was lost in thought,” feeling himself flush too, “and this is my stop.” He pointed to the bus sign.
Kurt smiled, feeling butterflies in his stomach. “I’d love to,” he remembered Santana, the feeling plunging down, “Oh. But I can’t. I have this thing.”
“Oh.” Blaine looked at their feet and shrugged, “Too bad.” Kurt felt horrible and he wished he could just stand Santana up, “Blaine, I’m sorry.”, he wanted to grab Blaine’s hand but changed his mind and rest it on his shoulder, the way guys would do with their friends, “it’s just...I promised. Raincheck?”
“Sure. I...er...I guess I should go. I have boxes to unpack.” Kurt watched how Blaine walked down and felt the little bit of hope he had left also plummet down and disappear like snow in summer.
