“WAKE UP!”Wes yelled hitting a sleeping Blaine with an over sized pillow.
“What?!” Blaine jumped up, disoriented glaring at Wes.
“It’s Saturday” Wes beamed.
“Yea, and yesterday was Friday, congratulations you’ve graduated kindergarten.” Blaine rolled his eyes as he fell back into his bed.
“It’s Saturday! April 7th!” Wes hit Blaine again when he realized he had fallen back asleep.
“WHAT DO YOU WANT WES?!” Blaine yelled.
“Rachel’s birthday is today” Wes said sounding a bit disappointed.
“Oh.”
“She invited you, you know, please don’t tell me you’re going to sit here with your depressing guitar music Blaine, I may just have to stage an intervention”
“Even if, it’s 12:27pm… The party is at 5. Is there any reason you have disturbed my sleep Wesley?”
“Well we have to go shopping for her present”
“What does that have to do with me?”
“C’mon Blaine, don’t be such a downer” Wes whined.
Blaine had only known Rachel for 5 months and had only exchanged as much as polite greetings nothing more. Wes had tried his best not to flaunt his girlfriend in front of Blaine in an effort to not make him even lonelier. Although he didn’t know much about her, Blaine liked her, she was pretty, annoying at times but DAMN that girl had a voice.
Blaine rolled over, facing away from Wes, but Wes had opened the windows and the midday sun was blinding Blaine so he was forced to face Wes again.
“Fine.” Blaine grumbled, making no move to get out of bed.
“Great…now…get up!” Wes demanded, “we only have 4 and a half hours!”
“That’s plenty of time”
“Blaine, have you seen yourself? You need some serious skin and hair care, 4 hours isn’t nearly enough time” Wes said walking out of the room.
“You sound like a girl Wes!” Blaine yelled after him.
“GET UP!” Wes yelled back.
“FINE!” Blaine yelled getting up, making his way to the kitchen to pour himself some coffee.
He was unbelievably tired, he had spent majority of the night thinking about Kurt. He had returned to the bar last night, but this time the other man was nowhere in sight. Kurt had spent most of the night at the bar, sometimes even flirting as Blaine had liked to think, but it couldn’t be, Kurt had a boyfriend and Blaine wasn’t about to get into another inevitable heartbreak. When it was the end of Blaine’s shift, his sides ached from laughing, Kurt was funny, he kept telling witty jokes about the people that came into the bar. Once they’re hands had touched and Blaine looked up to find Kurt gazing at him with a soft expression, almost as if he were sympathizing with Blaine.
“For what?” he had thought.
“I umm…I should get going” Kurt had finally said, breaking the gaze and standing to leave.
“Back to the boyfriend” Blaine murmured under his breath.
“What was that?” Kurt raised an eyebrow.
“Nothing. Yea I should be going too”
Kurt smiled as he turned to walk away, “Bye Blaine”
“Bye Kurt.” Blaine noticed a piece of fabric on the table, when he picked it up he realized it was Kurt’s scarf.
“Hey! You left your-“ Blaine started to yell, but Kurt had already left.
Blaine bundled up the scarf and was about to put it in the safe, incase Kurt came back in looking for it, but something about the soft cotton and the vanilla scent made him do otherwise. He collected his things, along with the scarf and walked home.
Blaine lay in bed, with the scarf on his chest, inhaling the soft, warm scent coming from it. Suddenly he felt like some sort of creepy stalker and placed it on his bedside table.
“Hey! Blaine! Come back to me” Wes was standing in front of Blaine waving his hand in front of Blaine’s face, suddenly a sly smile appearing on his face, “You were thinking about last night weren’t you?”
Blaine looked at Wes, still in his sleeping clothes, “Don’t you have to go get ready Wesley?”
“As do you” he replied still smiling.
Blaine turned and walked towards the bathroom, took a shower and got dressed in a pair of black cutoff jeans, his favourite pair of shoes and a black polo.
“Ready?”Wes popped his around the corner of Blaine’s door.
“Yea.”
Kurt had gone back to the bar, he knew it was a mistake, because now Blaine was in his head even more than before. Kurt didn’t want to admit to himself that he could possibly like Blaine, they’d met twice and Kurt had a boyfriend. He had a boyfriend. He kept reminding himself. He was distracted by the buzzing of his phone on his dresser.
“Yes Rachel?” Kurt answered
“You’re still coming right?” she asked worriedly.
“Yes, I said I was going to.”
“Kay. Good, okay see you in a few” she chirped.
Kurt hung up the phone, it was his best friend’s birthday, and he couldn’t miss it. Jake on the other hand had plans made before they were invited. So he’d be going alone.
He got dressed and styled his hair in record time and made his way to the hotel Rachel had rented to celebrate her birthday. He was early, Rachel wasn’t even there yet. He sat in one of the chairs and waited.
“Blaine Anderson. Would you please get out of your room? we’re going to be late!” Wes yelled from outside Blaine’s closed door.
“Wes, it’s 4:30, how early exactly did you plan to get there, it’s a five minute drive” Blaine reasoned.
“What if there’s traffic?”
“15 minutes tops.”
“Well at the rate you’re going we’re going to be 15 minutes late.”
Blaine opened the door to find Wes leaning on the door post. “I’m ready.”
“Good. Let’s go”
At around 4:50, Blaine entered the room, it was clear the party had already begun. People were crammed on the dance floor, dancing the night away to some song Blaine did not recognize.
“Hey!”
Blaine turned to see Rachel planting a kiss on Wes, he couldn’t help but roll his eyes.
“I was worried you weren’t going to make it” She said brushing the hair out of his face.
“Why would I miss my girlfriend’s big day?” He smiled.
“Blaine! I’m so glad you came, Wes told me all about your guitar playing”
Blaine glared at Wes who shrugged sheepishly.
“Well, I didn’t really have a choice” Blaine rolled his eyes
“Well, enjoy! Now if you excuse me, Wes and I have some catching up to do” She smiled slyly pulling Wes into the crowd, leaving Blaine alone.
“Great”
Blaine wondered over to the bar and took a seat.
“It’s weird to see you on this side” a familiar voice spoke, Blaine turned. Kurt.
“Oh! Hey! What…what are you doing here?” Blaine stammered.
Kurt smiled, “Her birthday, been best friends since high school, you?”
“Oh, well, my best friend, just so happens to be her boyfriend” Blaine sighed.
“Oh, Wesley?” Kurt said sounded surprised.
“That’s him, I was only invited because Wesley couldn’t keep his thoughts to himself”
“What thoughts exactly?” Kurt asked curiously
“He thinks me sitting in my room playing my guitar is depressing. I find it liberating” Blaine shrugged.
“You play guitar?” Kurt asked sounding a bit surprised.
“Mmhhmm” Blaine nodded, trying to look unmoved by Kurt’s presence, when inside he was screaming like a little girl.
“Do you play anything else?”
“Umm, yea, I can play the piano….and the drums, harmonica, violin” Blaine said nonchalantly.
“Wow” Kurt whispered “You must be really talented.”
Blaine shrugged. “So, uumm…where’s…”he started.
“Jake?” Kurt finished “Not here, he had made other plans.”
Blaine couldn’t help but notice Kurt’s tone seemed a little less friendly and couldn’t help but ask.
“How long you guys been together?”
“Two years” Kurt replied simply.
“Long time” Blaine whispered.
“Sure does feel like it.”
A few minutes of silence passed when Rachel and Wes emerged from the dancing crowd, Wes noticed Kurt and sent a wink in Blaine’s direction, evoking the usual roll of his eyes. Wes obviously wasn’t backing off.
“Hey! Blaine, Wes told me you have a voice on you” Rachel spoke bouncing.
Blaine narrowed eyes, “Oh did he now?”
“Mhm, so why don’t you go up on stage and bring this house down, I mean I’d go on but Wes just can’t seem to let me go”
“You sing too?”Kurt interrupted.
“Apparently” Blaine murmured.
“So, why are you still sitting here? Go sing! I’m sure they have a guitar up there too” Kurt encouraged, making Blaine actually consider it.
“Oh please no more depressing songs” Wes groaned.
“You know what Wes, I’ll do it…just because I know you like my depressing songs so much”
“Great!”Rachel beamed,”come on” she said extending her hand, Blaine took it and was led to a stage and handed a guitar.
He began to strum a few notes that slowed down the pace of the night, people moved closer to their partners for the first slow dance of the night.
“First, I’d just like to say a Happy Birthday to Ms. Rachel Berry” Blaine spoke. The room erupted in loud applause as Rachel beamed and mouthed a “thank you” to him. Blaine nodded and started to sing.
“It’s a little bit funny, this feeling inside
I’m not one of those who can, easily hide
I don’t have much money but, boy if I did
I’d buy a big house where, we both could live
I know it’s not much, but it’s the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one’s for you..."
Blaine could feel himself getting lost in the song and chanced a glance at Kurt, he sat attentively, watching Blaine and he could swear he saw him wink. Blaine smiled.
“And you can tell everybody, this is your song
May be quite simple but, now that it’s done
I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind
That I put down in words…
How wonderful life is, when you’re in the world…”
Blaine finished the song to a loud applause, he noticed Kurt standing and clapping proudly. Blaine couldn’t help but feel, well, good, he hadn’t felt like that in a while.
“Depressive music pays off Wes, you should try it” Blaine smirked at Wes
“No thanks buddy, you play enough for the whole of Times Square” Wes smiled
“You have an awesome voice” Kurt said instantly as Blaine was seated again
“Thanks” Blaine said, his cheeks becoming flushed.
The night passed and after a bit too many drinks their conversation became more interesting.
“So, tell me, what is it with you and bowties?” Kurt asked
“I just like ‘em” Blaine said
“Well,” Kurt said moving closer to Blaine, “it happens to look very good on you”
Blaine could taste the alcohol coming from Kurt, he was drunk obviously and Blaine wasn’t one to take advantage of any drunken person, but Kurt was incredibly close and in this light, he had looked more beautiful than Blaine thought was possible.
“Kurt?”
Both men broke eye contact, turning to see who had interrupted them.
“Jake” Kurt gasped.
