CHAPTER 13

Blaine knew it was time to explain the situation to his sister.

"Ev? Can I talk to you for a minute?"

Evelyn looked up from her place on the floor where she was playing with some rag dolls with a little girl about her age.

"But Blainey! I am playing with Kara!"Ev whined and pouted up at Blaine.

"Yes, I know but I really need to talk to you. You will come back to play with her when we are finished." Blaine said with a sweet smile.

Evelyn seemed to think about it and then nodded and stood up. Blaine took her hand and started walking with her towards the edge of the field. Alongside the fence where he knew Kurt would be arriving soon.

"Okay sweetie, I am sorry for interrupting your playtime but I wanted to talk to you very seriously. I want you to listen to me carefully, is that clear?" he said with a stern tone but not too much, just enough to make her nod seriously and pay attention.

"Okay. You know how they took Charlene to the tower a few days ago?" he said this carefully because he knew this was a very delicate subject to his sister.

Evelyn nodded, her eyes were looking down and he saw a tear make its way down her cheek, "Yes. She never came back." She whispered.

"Exactly. I don't know what they are doing to the people going into the tower," well of course that was a lie, he knew exactly what they were doing to all those people but he was not going to tell his sister that. "and I don't want to go in there if I don't know what's going on. So... I asked a friend for help. He's going to help us get out of here." He said slowly, he needed his sister to understand everything he said.

"But Blaine! You don't have any friends!" she said giggling and scrunching her face adorably. She just couldn't imagine his brother having a friend.

"Oh but I do! His name is Kurt. And he wants to help us get out of here before they take us to the tower. Do you want to meet him?"

Blaine knew this could be a mistake, introducing his sister to Kurt. He didn't want her to get attached to him. If Kurt were to bail on them, he knew his sister's heart would be broken. And his too, but he wasn't about to think about that, he was more worried about his sister's well-being.

Evelyn shook her head rapidly, "No, no, no, no! Blainey! I can't meet Kurt!" she said and her face was scrunched up with worry.

Blaine was confused and, he couldn't deny it, a little hurt by his sister's reaction.

"But why not Ev?"

"Because what if he doesn't like me?" she whispered, "If he doesn't like me, he won't want to help me anymore..."

Blaine chuckled lightly at his sister's worries.

"Oh honey. He will love you! I promise." Blaine said with a sweet smile.

"You don't know that..."

"Oh but I do!" he said and picked her up from the ground. When the little girl's feet left the ground she started giggling uncontrollably.

"Okay, okay. I'll meet him." She said, her laughter coming down.

"That's my girl." He looked up and saw Kurt making his way through the forest. "Okay honey, see that guy? That's Kurt."

Evelyn scrunched her face as she looked at Kurt carefully from afar. After a few seconds she nodded and leaned towards her brother's ear.

"He's handsome..." Blaine gaped at her. His mouth wide open, like a fish out of the water. Evelyn giggled at his brother's face.

Yes, Blaine had noticed that Kurt was indeed very handsome. And yes, he had found out that he was different when he was younger but he wasn't ready to admit it to himself.

"Yes, sweetie. He is."

Blaine followed Kurt with his eyes until he was in front of them, in the other side of the wired fence.

"Hello!" He said happily. He was too chipper; Blaine hoped that that meant good news.

Evelyn, at the last minute got embarrassed and hid her face on his brother's neck Blaine chuckled lightly and poked his sister's ribs.

"Hey baby, come on, say hi!"

The moment she heard the word 'baby', Evelyn lifted her face out of her brother's neck, with an indignant expression.

"Hey! I am not a baby!" She pouted, and Kurt thought it was the most adorable thing he had ever seen. Her dark straight locks of hair fell on her shoulders, and a few covered her eyes a bit. She was really thin and looked tired, but nothing compared to Blaine's appearance. He looked terrible.

"Sorry, sorry! You are not a baby. So if you aren't a baby you can say hi to Kurt right?"

Evelyn looked torn, she should say hi to prove that she was no longer a baby, but she didn't like stranger, even though this stranger was Blainey's friend. But she had to be a big girl and say hi. She nodded her head with a determined look and opened her mouth.

"Hello, Kurt." She said. She had expected her voice to come out a little higher but that was all she could do at the moment.

Kurt couldn't suppress a smile. That must've taken a lot of courage for her to say those simple words.

"Well, hello! You must be Evelyn. Your brother has told me everything about you."

The girl seemed surprised.

"He has told you about me?"

"Oh yes! He cannot shut up about you. He always tells me how smart you are, and how strong you are, and how well behaved you are too."

Blaine had the biggest and brightest smile on his face. He couldn't help it. This guy barely knew him and he was treating his sister so nicely. He knew he had to have the biggest love struck puppy look on his face but he didn't care right now.

Evelyn blushed by all those comments Kurt was making about her. Blaine couldn't be happier.

"Kurt, are you going to get us out of here?" the little girl looked at the young man that was across the fence with wide, innocent eyes.

Kurt looked taken aback but he quickly recovered and smiled.

"Yes sweetie. I will take you out of here."

"Are mommy and daddy coming with us too?"

Kurt immediately looked at Blaine. Blaine hadn't told his sister about how their parents were most probably dead by now.

He put her down and kneeled in front of her so he was eye to eye with her.

"Honey... mommy and daddy are not coming with us..."

Evelyn eyed him curiously, obviously confused.

"But why? Don't they want to come with us?" now she looked hurt.

"Oh no sweetie. They would love to come with us. It's just that... they are gone honey."

"What do you mean they are gone? When did they leave? Today?"

"No sweetie. They left a long time ago."

Evelyn shook her head.

"No. They were here yesterday."
Blaine had never felt more confused.

"What do you mean?"

"Yesterday, I was walking with Kara by the edge of our part of the field and at the other part of the field there were mommy and daddy. They were working and 2 men were yelling at them. It was ugly but I saw them."

She said that so innocently, she didn't know the effect it was having on her brother.

Kurt knew he had to do something. Blaine was about to collapse. So he decided to take control.

"Ev. Sweetie. I need to speak to your brother, would you mind excusing us?" his voice was as sweet as it could get. He didn't want to scare the little girl. She nodded oblivious to everything that was happening and skipped away.

Blaine lifted his gaze from the floor and looked right into Kurt's eyes. Suddenly Kurt knew what Blaine was thinking.

My parents are alive.
