Kurt didn't really intend on spending his Saturday night in the emergency room with his niece. But of course he hadn't really had any plans at all.
When Finn and Rachel- a very pregnant Rachel mind you- showed up at his door Wednesday night, begging him at the last minute to take Shae in for a week so that they could go out of town for a funeral for someone on Rachel's biological mom Shelby's side of the family, he couldn't say no.
And when two days into Finn and Rachel being out of town, Shae came home from daycare with a fever, he still didn't mind. He didn't even call Finn and Rachel to worry them after he'd called his Dad and Carole freaking out, when her fever continued to spike.
But when he peaked into his room to check on Shae who he'd just tucked into bed, completely covered in sweat but still shivering violently, he panicked. And now here he was, sitting in the tiny emergency room, sitting as close to the bed that the three year old was in without being in it. Shae layed sleeping, her brown hair sticking to her still partially sweaty forehead. Her cheeks a bright pink color from the fever.
There was a quiet knock on the door before a man walked in the door. Kurt looked him up and down. He looked young, younger than himself. Curly black hair, refined by gel, and He had on the average hospital attire of blue scrubs and horrible shoes, but the lanyard above his neck was decorated with Mickey Mouse shapes of every different color. And there was a small tube of bubbles attatched to the multicolored lanyard. He chuckled at the man.
"Hi." The doctor put his hand out for Kurt to shake it. "I'm Dr. Anderson, but you're more than welcome to call me Blaine. And who is this little lady?" He glanced down at Shae who was stirring a little at the sudden noise in the room, the IV drip in her wrist moving with her.
"That's Sh-"
"I'm Shae. I'm free." The little girl practically whispered from the bed.
"Well nice to meet you Shae, I'm Blaine." He smiled warmly at her. "Could you tell me what's wrong with you?"
"I don't feel berry good." She whined a little.
"I'm sure you don't.." He looked down at the chart, then back up at Kurt. "You said she's been running a high fever?"
"Yes."
"And she hasn't vomited or had any other sort of symptoms?"
"No, she came home from daycare with it the other night, I don't know what happened. But I tried to give her some childrens Tylonol, but nothing seemed to help and Oh my God Rachel is gonna flip I have to call he-"
"Kurt, Shae's gonna be just fine." Blaine said, cutting of a fully panicking Kurt. "She's just got a very odd case of the flu, and got a little dehydrated, I wanna keep her on a drip all night and then I'm sure she'll be okay to leave here with you tomorrow morning."
Kurt sank into his chair with relief.
"Uncle Kurt?" A tiny voice came from the bed.
"Yes sweetie?" He looked down at Shae, moving a strand of hair from her forehead.
"Can I sleep now? I'm really sleepy."
Kurt nodded. "Of course you can, and I'll be right here when you wake up. I promise." She smiled when he kissed her small forehead. He watched as the little girl drifted off to sleep. He looked over to see Blaine, standing staring at him.
"I'm sorry I should go I-"
"Thank you, I would have been panicking all night if you hadn't come in here and calmed me down." Kurt chuckled a little bit. "I freaked out a little too fast."
"No, you freaked out at the right time." Blaine sent a charming smile Kurt's way. "If you would have waited any longer things could have been much worse. It was a good thing you brought her in."
They both sat in a half-uncomfortable silence.
Kurt's eyes traveled to Blaine's to only see them fixated on Kurt's left hand.
"No, she's not my child. And no, the Rachel that I mentioned before is not my wife." Kurt looked up to see Blaine looking dumb-founded. "Even if she was my type, she wouldn't be my type."
"Oh." The realization suddenly dawned on Blaine. "Oh, so you're.. "
"Gay?" Kurt questioned. "What was your first clue?"
"Well, if it's any less awkward, not that I think it will be I think I might make it a little more weird. " He rambled. "I am too."
Kurt smiled a little. "Thank you for coming and taking care of Shae, Doctor Anderson. " He stretched out a hand for Blaine to shake. The man in the scrubs took it with a sad smile and shook it.
"I should be back tomorrow morning to check on Shae before they discharge her." The dark haired man left the room without another sound.
He'd make it a point to come back the next morning, just to get the chance to ask Kurt what his plans were next Saturday night.
