Kurt stretched as he closed up the shop on Saturday and glanced over to the still brightly lit Supercakes that was filled with people.
Curious, Kurt walked over to the shop and opened. Bright eyed children were chatting loudly and running through the store. Blaine was standing with a tray of steaming mugs and handing them out, wide grin in place.
“Kurt!” Blaine waved him over. “Hey!”
“Hi! This is different,” Kurt glanced around, taking in the huge screen along the wall.
“Yeah! We’re doing a superhero movie night. We’re going to try to do them once a month,” Blaine was beaming and handing out hot chocolate to the crowd of children. “The parents reserve a spot for their children and we make themed desserts to go with the movie.”
“That’s a great idea!” Kurt looked around at the excited children. “What movie are you watching tonight?”
“Oh it’s a great one, the 1966 Batman with Adam West,” Blaine’s eyes lit up. “I know you probably have plans to go out tonight since it’s Saturday but you can stay if you want.”
“I’ve never seen it,” Kurt couldn’t hide the smile as Blaine gaped.
“Oh then I don’t care what plans you had. You have to watch the movie now,” Blaine laughed and stepped up front. “Okay! If everyone has gotten a cup of hot chocolate and a cookie or cupcake then take a seat in front of the screen and we will get this party started!”
The children cheered and after some moving around everyone was sitting in the chairs and the movie was started. As the opening music started Blaine grabbed Kurt’s hand and led him to the back of the room where there were a few empty chairs. Sam smiled and gave him a wave before handing him hot chocolate and a bat shaped cookie.
The movie was absolutely ridiculous and just made better by both Blaine and Sam mouthing along every word. About halfway through Blaine jumped slightly and pulled his phone out of his pocket. Kurt couldn’t help but glance over and see the message displayed on the screen.
Remy <3: Where r u babe?
He leaned back quickly but was able to see Sam roll his eyes. Blaine quickly tapped out a message and put his phone in his lap, turning back to the movie. The phone buzzed loudly and he frowned down at the screen before picking it up and answering it quietly.
“Remy, I’m in the middle of the movie,” He whispered, giving Sam a little shrug when he sighed. “I told you about it before.”
He sat in silence before sighing.
“No, I’m here with Sam and Kurt…Kurt’s the owner of the bakery across the street…no…No! Okay, give me a second I need to move,” He held his hand over the received and quickly moved into the kitchen to finish his call.
“Of course,” Sam scowled at the door to the kitchen.
“What?”
“It’s Remy. He usually starts with the ‘where are you?” questions and the ‘who are you with?” questions. Blaine just runs off to assure him that no he is not sneaking around,” Sam sunk further in his chair. “Sorry…it just pisses me off. He’s been doing it for as long as I can remember.”
“How long have they been dating if you don’t mind me asking?” Kurt glanced over.
“They started dating our freshman year of college. Remy was this big, handsome, older guy who swept him off his feet,” Sam tapped his fingers together. “They’ve been together ever since.”
“Sounds like they really like each other.”
“Mmhmm,” Sam raised his eyebrows.
“So you don’t like him?” Kurt knew he should stop asking all these personal questions but he was really curious. They were sitting far enough back in the shop that no one could hear them talk.
“Damn…I’m a bit of a gossip,” Sam grinned slightly and leaned closer to Kurt. “It just sucks having to pretend to like him. They started dating and suddenly Blaine started spending all his time with him. He dropped out of college at the end of the year because he said it wasn’t for him. I’m completely convinced that douchebag had something to do with it. I finished up with my degree and we wanted to start the business. Blaine always liked to bake and I always wanted to start a new business. Remy didn’t want us to. He pretty much made it so Blaine was dependent on him. He travels all the time and constantly calls Blaine to make sure he’s not doing anything. It’s bullshit.”
“What an asshole,” Kurt glanced over to the open door of the kitchen where he could still see Blaine talking on the phone.
“Sorry dude, I shouldn’t dump this on you. Blaine’s been my best friend forever and I just feel like this guy is not good for him,” Sam sighed and leaned back as Blaine came back into the room.
“Everything okay?” Sam asked lightly.
“Yeah, he was just wondering where I was,” Blaine shrugged and sat back down. Sam shot Kurt a look and took a long drink from his hot chocolate.
Kurt tried to enjoy the movie again which was easy with how animated Blaine was throughout. By the end he had almost forgotten about the phone call and was just really enjoying himself.
“Well that was fun!” Kurt grinned as the last of the kids left. “You were right, that movie was great.”
“Right!” Blaine laughed. “Every time I watch it I cry I laugh so hard.”
“You are totally invited to the next one!” Sam grinned at him from where he was cleaning up the shop.
“I will be here!” Kurt couldn’t help but smile. “I should head back. As much as I would love to stay here I do have to head to an early bridal shower tomorrow.”
“No problem, stay warm,” Blaine sent him a quick smile and he walked out into the cold night.
“Hey Kurt!” He jumped about halfway across the street and turned to see Sam. “Listen…could you not tell Blaine what we were talking about?”
“Of course not,” Kurt assured him. “I totally understand ranting, you should hear Santana and I go.”
“Thanks man,” Sam relaxed. “It’s just sometimes I talk and then I realize that I probably shouldn’t have said anything.”
“Don’t worry about it It’s better than holding it in until you explode,” Kurt shivered.
With another wide grin, Sam waved and jogged back into Supercakes to help finish cleaning.
Kurt made his way into his apartment in record time and made a bee line to pour himself a glass of wine and sit in front of the large window. He totally was just watching the falling snow and not the brightly lit window across the street.
A sudden movement startled him and he watched as Blaine hurried to the front door. He opened it and waved Remy in, not making it two steps into the room before the larger man had him pressed up against the wall and kissed him deeply.
Kurt’s mouth dropped open slightly as Blaine pushed him back, grinning up at him and playfully shaking his head. Almost instantly, Remy was back kissing him and Blaine relaxed.
Face flaming, Kurt hurried into his bedroom and sat down with a groan. Honestly he didn’t even know Remy. The other man could be a great guy and clearly he made Blaine happy.
Maybe Sam and Remy just didn’t get along. It wasn’t really fair to judge him so quickly.
After a restless night, he walked downstairs to see a frowning Santana standing at the bottom of the staircase.
“It’s too early for this,” He sighed.
“I have bad news and weird news. Which do you want to hear first,” She kept her hands on her hips.
“Um…weird?”
“Okay,” She handed him a note. “I found this under the door this morning. Apparently Blaine and his boyfriend have invited us over for dinner tonight.”
“Really?” Kurt opened the note and read through it quickly.
“You have to go. It kind of ties into the bad news,” Santana sighed. “Our sales are going down. When they opened we started losing business.”
“What!”
“Yup. So, you need to go and try to figure out what they are doing so we can do it better,” She smiled, looking scarily shark like. “I know you think he’s cute but this is business and in this economy we have to get aggressive.”
“You need to come with me,” He said and she pouted. “Seriously, dress sexy. Well…like you always do.”
“Thanks.”
“I’m not going in alone,” With a heavy sigh she nodded.
“Let’s start setting up the shop,” Santana walked over to the register and he scribbled a quick note on the paper before jogging over to the other shop and sliding it under the door.
Can’t wait!
Much to Kurt’s relief, the shop was very busy. With the holidays coming up orders were pouring in and people were bringing their families to get snacks. When he finally closed up he was humming to himself and smiling.
“Go upstairs and change,” Santana waved him off. “I’ll finish up here.”
“You’re not going to change?”
“Kurt, please. I look hot,” She motioned down to the clingy dress she was wearing.
Rolling his eyes, Kurt ran up the stairs to put on his outfit. He had planned it all day long and was pleased to see that the tight black pants, white button up, red tie, and leather jacket looked as good as he had thought.
“Okay let’s go,” Kurt sighed. “I can’t believe we’re going to use this nice neighborly moment to spy.”
“Do you want Elizabeth’s to close?”
“No,” He scowled as they stepped into Supercakes.
“Hey!” Blaine called from the back. “Kurt? Santana?”
“Hi Blaine,” Kurt grinned at him as he appeared in the doorway and Santana gave him a small tightlipped smile. “Thanks for inviting us!”
“No problem! Come on up!” He led them up the stairs to a cluttered but cozy apartment. “I had no idea it was going to be so cold outside.”
“Me neither, I would have worn a thicker jacket,” Kurt laughed and looked around at the pictures lining the wall. He stared at the one of Blaine and Cooper with their arms around each other’s shoulders and smiling.
“Well next time don’t forget your jacket,” Blaine winked. “We do have some hot bread to go with pasta. Would you like a glass of wine?”
“Yes,” Santana spoke up loudly.
“Great! Come into the kitchen.”
The kitchen was amazing. Food was cooking on the stove and smelled spectacular. It was huge and perfectly organized.
“Kurt,” Remy was standing at the back counter dressed in slacks and a grey sweater. “And I haven’t met you, I’m Remy.”
“Santana,” Kurt could feel her stiffen slightly.
“It’s very nice to meet you.”
She returned with a soft hum, gladly taking the glass of red wine from Blaine who handed another to Kurt.
“So, I’m so glad you were able to come. We’ve been wanting to do this for a long time,” Blaine gave Remy a bright smile. “You all were crazy busy today too!”
“Well, it’s the holidays,” Kurt shrugged, taking a long sip.
“Best time of the year,” Blaine laughed. “Dinner should be almost ready if you both want to take a seat. Rem and I will bring it out.”
Kurt and Santana wandered out into the dining room but Santana grabbed him by the elbow.
“Douchebag over there is not 100% gay,” She muttered. “He was staring at my boobs the entire time his boyfriend was in the same room.”
“That doesn’t mean anything Santana,” Kurt hissed back as they sat.
“True, I have awesome boobs but Kurt…” She gave him one last look as Blaine and Remy returned with steaming plates of pasta and bread.
“This is amazing!” Kurt practically moaned around the first bite.
“I’m glad you like it,” Blaine blushed and smiled at the compliment. “It’s a family recipe.”
“Do you like it Santana?” Remy asked and Kurt could see how his eyes were fixed on her chest and her eyes narrowed.
“The pasta is great Blaine,” She shot him a winning smile and Remy frowned slightly. Kurt bit his lip when her spiked heel stabbed him in the leg as she kicked him.
“So, Remy what do you do?” Kurt turned to give the other man a glance.
“I work in advertising,” He shrugged and speared another veggie on his plate.
“Oh? Where?” Kurt gave him a short smile.
“Just everywhere,” Remy took another bite.
“So, I made a torte for dessert,” Blaine spoke up as they all finished and he picked up the plates. He came back out with plates of a single slice of beautiful dark chocolate torte decorated with fresh raspberries.
“This is so good hun,” Remy said as he took a large bite and Blaine beamed at him. “I’ll never get over how lucky I am to have a boyfriend with such a yummy hobby.”
“And that he turned that hobby into a career,” Kurt pointed out.
“Well I have always love baking,” Blaine shrugged. “I’m sure you do as well Kurt.”
“I can’t imagine having a different job,” Kurt grinned. “The fact that it’s my own business is even better.”
The conversation turned to what they were doing over the holidays and Kurt kept feeling Santana gently kicking him under the table.
“Can you point me to the bathroom?” Kurt asked suddenly.
“Um sure, it’s through the bedroom,” Blaine pointed and went back to his story. With a smile Kurt stood and walked into the equally cluttered bedroom. He looked around, smiling at the guitar and keyboard against the wall but it was the papers spread over the desk that caught his attention.
He looked down at the scribbled ideas and recipes, written out in Blaine’s neat handwriting. With a deep breath he pulled out his phone and took several pictures before walking back out.
“We should probably head out,” Kurt hooked his thumb over his shoulder. With a wave and a promise that they would do this again, Santana and Kurt made their way across the street.
“Did you get anything?”
“Some recipes,” Kurt shrugged, trying to ignore the guilt in his stomach.
“Awesome!” Santana’s smug smile widened. “But that Remy guy? What an asshole.”
“Yeah, I know,” Kurt mumbled, glancing back at the brightly lit window.
