Kurt held the box tightly in his hands, took a deep breath, and walked into Supercakes.
“Hi,” A tall blonde man grinned brightly at him. “Welcome to Supercakes!”
“Oh hey!” He tried to ignore the disappointment was nowhere to be seen. “I’m Kurt, I’m the owner of Elizabeth’s across the street. I figured it was time to give you a proper welcome to the neighborhood gift.”
“Awesome! I’m Sam, it’s nice to meet you,” He held out his hand. “The other owner Blaine is in the back finishing up an order.”
“I actually already met Blaine,” Kurt held up the box. “But I did bring you some cookies, M&M.”
“Dude awesome!” Sam’s face lit up. “Sorry we haven’t been over to say hi but we’ve been really busy.”
“Uh huh,” Kurt chewed on the inside of his cheek. “Your shop is really…fun.”
“Right?” Sam beamed around at the model spaceships and at the comic book characters painted on the walls. “We had a great time decorating and setting everything up. This neighborhood is really nice.”
“It is! I actually live above my bakery,” Kurt smiled, relaxing around the other man.
“Blaine lives upstairs in this building,” Sam motioned up. “Your shop is really pretty and that girl who works there, is she your girlfriend?”
“No, no, no, no, no, no,” Kurt laughed and shook his head. “Santana is…well she is a descendent of the devil himself. Plus, we’re not on each other’s teams.”
“Oh,” Sam raised his eyebrows.
“Sorry, was that way to much information. I kind of ramble…” Kurt felt his cheeks burn. “I’m gay.”
“Cool,” Sam shrugged. “Blaine and I have been roomies since high school and I’ve never had a problem living with a gay dude.”
“Blaine is gay?” Kurt tried to fight back the smile.
“Yup,” Sam smiled at him. “Why? You looking for a date?”
“Absolutely not.”
“Aw you’re gonna hurt my feelings,” Blaine walked into the shop, batting his eyelashes and elbowing Sam in the gut. “I finished the order for that birthday party.”
“Well our new neighbor is bringing us cookies!”
“Aw,” Blaine reached into the box and took a bit. “This is really good! Seriously man, cookies are a little cliché but better than a lawsuit.”
“Why stray from tradition?” Kurt shrugged and Blaine gave him a little grin before taking another big bite.
The curly haired man was wearing dark jeans and a black shirt with a batman symbol on it. His hair, and everything else he was wearing, was covered in a dusting of flour and frosting was smeared on the red apron he was wearing around his waist.
“I mean really, what brand of peanut butter do you use?” He popped another piece of cookie into his mouth.
“I can’t share all of my secrets,” Kurt winked.
A smudge of blue frosting was smeared on the on the side of Blaine’s jaw and without even thinking twice Kurt reached to grab a napkin and wipe it off. Blaine’s eyes locked with his for a moment and Kurt thought his heart stopped.
Then Blaine’s eyes lit up and his smile widened and Kurt knew his heart stopped.
“Hey!” Blaine called out and a huge guy pushed past Kurt to kiss Blaine firmly.
“Hey Remy,” Sam said simply, giving him a tightlipped smile. “Nice to see you too.”
“Sorry!” Blaine pulled back, goofy grin still in place. “Kurt, this is my boyfriend Remy and Remy this is our new neighbor Kurt!”
Remy was a monster of a man, maybe even rivaling Kurt’s stepbrother in height. He was shockingly handsome with sharp brown eyes and his hair was pulled back into a small ponytail. The suit he was wearing looked like it was incredibly expensive and he gave Kurt a fleeting smile before glancing away from him.
“It’s nice to meet you,” Kurt said softly, feeling his heart sink at the clear adoration shining in Blaine’s eyes.
“Come get lunch with me babe,” Remy rubbed Blaine’s back.
“I still have to box up an order and get it finished up,” He hooked his thumb over his shoulder and glanced back to the kitchen.
“Sam can do it,” Remy shrugged. “Come on.”
“Rem, this is my job,” Blaine frowned slightly, glancing over to Kurt with an apologetic look.
“It’s an easy one. Sam can do it,” Remy seemed to get impatient as he reached to undo Blaine’s apron and placed it on a table. “Come on.”
He took Blaine’s hand and pulled him from the bakery, the younger man turning around to give them an small smile before vanishing around the corner.
“So that was Remy,” Sam said slowly. “Sorry, I had hoped you wouldn’t have been brought into the crazy right away.”
“He seemed nice.”
“Blaine likes him,” The blonde shrugged.
“You don’t?”
“Blaine likes him,” Sam gave him a small smile as he wiped down the counter.
“Mmhmm,” Kurt raised his eyebrows. “I feel like when new neighbors meet each other they chat about the weather and nearby grocery stores, not each other’s love lives.”
“Dude, look around,” Sam waved around the room at the hanging spaceships. “We’re hardly normal.”
“Normal is overrated,” Kurt laughed. “Believe me you guys are a lot nicer than the bitches who owned the organic dog treat shop before you.”
“Fancy,” Sam raised his eyebrows. “You know, I think I like you Kurt.”
“You’re not too bad yourself Sam,” Kurt gave him a small smile. “Well, I’d better go back to the shop to make sure Santana didn’t yell at anyone. Enjoy the cookies and come over anytime.”
“For sure!” Sam grinned and Kurt hurried through the cold street into Elizabeth’s.
“I saw Hot Guy walk by with equally Hot Guy a little while ago,” Santana glanced up.
“Yeah, that’s his boyfriend Remy,” He rolled his eyes and she snorted.
“Remy? Like the rat in that kids movie?” Santana’s eyes sparkled. “Well that sucks.”
“Go figure the hot gay guy across the street is dating someone who looks like a model. It’s not fair,” Kurt sighed and slumped against the counter.
“Well your plan of wooing him with cookies would have worked perfectly if not for the boyfriend. Clearly,” She said slowly and he glared at her. “Plus there is a wedding cake consult coming in fifteen minutes. You should probably get set up for that.”
“Shit,” Kurt scowled and hurried into the back to grab the books and sketchpads. Minutes later a beaming bride to be an her exhausted looking fiancé came in, eagerly tasting the cakes and picking out designs.
As the giddy bride walked out, Kurt put the final touches on his design before glancing up to see Blaine standing in the doorway.
“Finally coming to check out the competition?” Kurt teased.
“No,” Blaine grinned. “Maybe. Your shop is very nice, super fancy.”
“Thanks, I’m very proud of it,” Kurt grinned around at the décor.
“Seriously, it’s beautiful. And the designer cupcakes?” He grinned down at the display. “Very elegant.”
“Well, we pride ourselves on providing a high end product. We’ve even done celebrity events. You know Cooper Anderson? I catered his engagement party,” Kurt smiled as pride filled his chest.
“No matter what he tells you, Cooper is not really a celebrity,” Blaine laughed loudly. “He’s my older brother but I do remember the cupcakes at the party and they were amazing.”
“So your brother was one of People’s sexiest men alive?” Kurt felt his heart sink, there went the celebrity wedding he was hoping to cater.
“He has a giant poster of himself in almost every room of his house,” Blaine rolled his eyes. “I had to get super drunk and eat like thirty of your cupcakes to get through that party. He talked about himself more than anything else.”
Kurt smiled softly and nodded.
“So, I kind of wanted to apologize for Remy,” Blaine started awkwardly. “He gets in his moods sometimes and isn’t very good at social cues.”
“You don’t need to apologize for him,” Kurt waved his hand.
“Yeah well…I didn’t want you to get a bad first impression. He’s such a great guy,” His eyes lit up in clear adoration. “But I didn’t want us to be awkward around each other because well we’re neighbors both in business and our own homes and I think you’re super nice. I’d like us to be friends.”
And Kurt had to admit he wanted the same thing. The friendly, cute, happy guy living down the street may be taken but he could still be friends with him.
“I would too,” Kurt gave him a smile.
“Great!” Blaine perked up. “Well I’d better get back to work. I’ll see you around.”
Kurt waved slightly as Blaine hurried out across the freezing street.
“Kurt you have it so bad,” Santana sighed. “You’re staring at him like he is a particularly delicious slice of cake, which he totally is. You need to get back in the game after Trevor. You’ve been single for almost a year now.”
“I don’t know if I’m ready,” Kurt sighed heavily.
“You were drooling over him as soon as you saw him,” Santana’s grin was beginning to get on his nerves. “It’s been a long time since Trevor. You need to…”
“We don’t talk about Trevor!” Kurt put his hands over his ears. “Now go finish boxing up the orders for the baby shower tomorrow.”
“I thought you were doing that!”
“I was but you are pissing me off. I’m the boss, go box them up,” He shooed her off.
“Fine. You get really bitchy when you’re sexually frustrated,” She snapped and stomped into the back room to box up the orders of cupcakes. With a heavy sigh, Kurt leaned against the counter and smiled at a group of older ladies who came into the shop.
“Good afternoon, welcome to Elizabeths!”
The night ended with a huge group of college students treating themselves to dessert after a particularly brutal exam and Kurt had to shoo them out the door before locking it up.
Santana waved to him and walked out the back, leaving Kurt in the empty shop. Yawning, he started up the staircase in the back of the kitchen and walked into his little apartment.
The apartment was small but cozy with just a little living area, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. He had spent a lot of time decorating the space in shades of teal, green, and white and Kurt absolutely loved it.
Stretching, he ran his fingers through his hair and rolled his shoulders. The street outside was almost completely dark and peaceful and he took a long moment just to stare out at the swirling snow.
His attention was drawn to the lit up window across the street above Supercakes and he smiled softly. Blaine walked into his line of sight, looking down at something in his hand, and Kurt couldn’t help but stare.
Blaine was the more carefree, friendly people he had ever met. Just being around him made him feel light and happy and Kurt hadn’t felt that in a really long time.
He blinked a few times to see Blaine waving at him with a smile and he felt his cheeks burn as he waved awkwardly back. As soon as Blaine turned to look behind his shoulder Kurt dropped to the floor and shuffled to the side.
So maybe he was crushing on him a little.
Or maybe a lot.
Comments
This was really good. I absolutely love Sam and Santana in this story but I already really dislike Remy. My dislike of Remy probably stems from the fact that he is standing in the way of Kurt and Blaine becoming Klaine but what can I say. I find it awesome how Sam and Kurt hit it off right away and how when Sam asked about Santana, Kurt's response was to say she was a decedant of the devil. I can't wait to see what happens next and to see if Blaine and Sam's business causes trouble for Kurt's.
