Kurt Hummel had gotten to their apartment at nearly 7:30 that night. His boss had kept him in late for the fourth night in a row, and quite frankly it was getting exhausting. He knew working at Vogue would be challenging, but he never expected this. His adrenaline was restored, however, when he was walking up the last flight of stairs to the 4th level of their apartment building. He heard a fire alarm going off.
Saying a quick prayer to whatever deity there might be that it was not theirs, he broke into a full sprint; dodging their elderly neighbor Mrs. Leroy and a few kids on his way to apartment 6D. Once he got there, he yanked open the door and ran down the short hallway and into the kitchen. Blaine was standing on a chair while frantically waving a yellow dish cloth in front of the alarm. He didn't notice Kurt come in, however, and carried on.

Kurt looked to the stove and saw a pot of boiling and almost black substance. Thankfully Blaine had enough wits to turn the burner off, but that didn't explain what the hell was going on here.
"Blaine!" Kurt screeched over the deafening shrill of the alarm.
Blaine turned his torso so quickly that he almost fell off the chair. "Kurt!" he smiled sheepishly, "How was your day?"
"Get off the damn chair, Blaine." He did as he was told and helped Kurt up himself, watching embarrassed as Kurt simply took out the batteries. Kurt gracefully stepped off the chair and put it back into its spot by the table. "Now..what happened?"
"Well you were running late, and I know how your favorite meal after work is tomato soup and grilled cheese, so I tried to make it. The tomato soup didn't turn out so well." Both men looked over to the pot. So that's what it was.
"I'm sorry I ran late again today. I'm going to talk to my boss about shifting hours. I can't make any promises though, ok? I'm still relatively new, its only been 7 months." Blaine looked back to Kurt with a sad smile.
"I get it, I'm busy too. But hey, we have right now. Let's clean up and go out to dinner, huh? I'll take you to that fancy shmancy new French place down the street that you've been just dying to try." He winked at Kurt, gave him a chaste kiss on the lips, then made his way to the stove.
Kurt felt bad, he really did, and he knew that Blaine was feeling neglected even though he wouldn't say it in so many words. What was he supposed to do, though? Quit his job? He couldn't, not when it was just getting good. They just had to plow through it like every other problem they've had.
"Hey, uh, Kurt?..Kurt?.. Kurt." Blaine tried to shake Kurt out of his thoughts. Kurt snapped his head toward him and followed dutifully to the stove. After washing all the dishes and opening the windows to let the remaining smoke out, Blaine put the batteries back in the alarm and they headed off to Le Cygne Noir.

They were seated at a small booth in the back corner of the restaurant. Both just ordered salads, not wanting to take the risk of accidentally ordering some foreign dish that neither knew of. They were holding hands under the table. Even though this was New York and people were much more accepting or at least tolerant, there would always be that on-the-edge feeling of unacceptance.
Kurt was staring at Blaine as he looked down at his phone. He loved the way his long eyelashes fanned so beautifully across his cheekbones when he blinked or slept. He loved his course, black, unruly hair that Kurt took forever to convince Blaine to keep gel out of. He especially loved his golden eyes with specks of green and how they always seemed to convey whatever he was feeling so perfectly. Blaine felt uneasy under his gaze but paid no mind, Kurt can always look at him. God knows he's done his share of looking.
When their food arrived it didn't take them long to finish. Deciding to skip dessert, they started the trek home after Blaine paid the bill and tipped the waitress. They walked since it wasn't the long of a distance. Kurt took Blaine's hand and Blaine laid his head on the slightly taller man's shoulder.
"I'm still sorry about the soup thing." Blaine said suddenly.
"Oh honey, it's fine. No harm done. I just wish you'd call me before deciding to set fire to our apartment." Blaine chuckled.
"We do always say we want a new apartment! Just think Kurt, there could be a room for my music, and a room for your fashion templates and sketches, and an extra room for a nu-" Blaine cut himself off.
                "A what?"
"Well...I mean we've been married for a few years now, right?" Kurt looked at him slightly amused.
"I was there for the vows, yes." Blaine hit him playfully on the arm.
"Hush, you. Well, have you ever thought about starting a family? Kids?" Kurt stopped dead in his tracks.
"I-I mean yeah, after we got settled in New York with stable careers and money and Blaine, a kid has to be secure and we have to have enough love for it and-"
"Kurt!" Blaine interrupted. Kurt snapped his mouth shut, eyes wide. Blaine sighed and thought about what he was going to say. He couldn't screw this up. "Kurt, we have that. We have all of that. Ok so maybe we're not the richest people in the state of New York, but we have so much love to offer. We are settled and we do have the stability to support a child. There is absolutely no one on this earth that I would want to go through this insanely emotional and tough process with than you. You're so strong, Kurt, and I know you'd make one of the best fathers there is. You've single-handedly taught me how to love just as openly and hard as you do, and that's the best quality in a parent there could be in my opinion."
Kurt couldn't think of anything to say to that. His eyes were glassy with unshed tears and he couldn't think clearly. All that Blaine just said was just..it was perfect. Blaine opened his arms and Kurt pounced into them, hugging him tightly and breathing Blaine in with his nose secure in the nape of Blaine's neck.
"So is that a yes?" Blaine asked hesitantly. Kurt pulled back just enough to look into Blaine's eyes, noticing how little snowflakes caught on his eyelashes. This man was so beautiful, and he couldn't wait to start a family with him.
                "Yes."
