While both Kurt and Blaine wished that they had met each other earlier in life, that they didn’t have those lonely years without each other, there was one definite upside to it. They had already figured out what they wanted out of life, and when they finally found that missing puzzle piece in each other, they did not play games or wait around.
The past six months had been a whirlwind of dates and meeting friends and family, and Blaine knew without a doubt that Kurt was the one for him. He had been intrigued by him when he was just a name in a magazine, flustered when they actually met, and well on his way to falling in love with Kurt by the time their first date was only halfway through.
Blaine had just left a lunch meeting with a prospective client and chose to walk through the diamond district instead of sitting in a sweltering cab stuck in traffic, when he spotted something from the corner of his eye. He had walked this route plenty of times over the years, and he’d always enjoyed looking at all the beautiful pieces on offer, but never did he actually have any reason to look closer.
The thing that had caught his attention was a simple silver infinity ring at first sight, but when Blaine stepped up to the window, he could see that there was an engraving on the inside that read, ‘I Promise’.
He and Kurt had talked about the future, and they had both decided that, while they did eventually want to get married and have children, they wanted to build a solid foundation for their relationship first.
Blaine’s lease was going to be up soon, and they had agreed that it would be silly for him to renew it when he had been spending so much time with Kurt in his more spacious condo. Moving in together was a big step forward, and they were both very happy to be taking it, but the romantic in Blaine still yearned for a grand gesture.
Ring box safely tucked away, Blaine left the store ten minutes later and continued his workday, desperately trying to focus on the stacks of paperwork that needed his attention instead of the impromptu date night he was planning for that evening.
When the time finally came to leave the office, he placed an order for Kurt’s favorite take out and called up the local flower shop to make sure they still had a bouquet of Kurt’s preferred calla lilies. He picked them up on the way home and had just managed to set the table and light the candles when Kurt knocked on the door.
“Hello, darling,” Kurt said as he walked through the door, dropping a quick kiss on Blaine’s lips before placing his shoes and bag by the coat rack. “Work was a nightmare today, and I think I might kill my new assistant if he messes up again. How was your day?”
“Mine was great, thanks. I ordered dinner from that place around the corner, so I hope you’re hungry.”
“Starving,” Kurt said as he walked into the dining area, pulling up short when he noticed the table laid out. “Oh wow, Blaine… This looks gorgeous. But I don’t understand, I thought we were just gonna eat quickly and pack up some more boxes?”
“We were,” Blaine said as he came up behind Kurt. He wrapped his arms around his waist and placed a soft kiss on his neck before hooking his chin over Kurt’s shoulder. “I just wanted to do something nice for you. Show you how much I love you and how happy I am to be with you.”
Kurt turned around in Blaine’s arms and rested their foreheads together. “You’re such a sweetheart. I love you too.”
Nervously, Blaine took a step back and removed the ring box from where he had hidden it. He had thought about kneeling, but he did not want Kurt to get the wrong impression, so he simply lifted Kurt’s hand and placed the box in it.
“I know that our relationship is reaching a new level with us moving in together–”
“If that’s an engagement ring, my answer is yes,” Kurt cut in.
“Kurt, just open the box.”
“Is that…?”
“It’s a promise ring. I saw it, and I knew that it was perfect.”
“But what are you promising?”
“To always love you. To defend you, even when I know you’re wrong. To surprise you. To always pick up your phone call, no matter what I’m doing. To bake you cookies, at least twice a year. To kiss you, whenever and wherever you want. But mostly, to make sure you always remember that you really shouldn’t have swiped left.”
Kurt snorted and looked up at Blaine with watery eyes. “I love it. I love you so much.”
Blaine took the ring from the box and placed it on Kurt’s right ring finger. “I have always trusted my instincts. When it’s right, it’s right. And you and me, we will always be right.”
